He received his Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts at the University of Michigan. He obtained his Master of Science degree in Forestry at his alma mater in 1905, and then he entered the United States Forest Service. In 1910 Peavy was selected to become the head of the newly created Department of Forestry at Oregon Agricultural College. In 1911, he became a member of the Oregon State Board of Forestry and served as director from 1932-1941. In 1913, the OAC Forestry Department was designated as the School of Forestry and George W. Peavy was appointed the first Dean. In 1932 he was appointed acting President of Oregon State College and in 1934 became President. In 1936, he was awarded honorary Doctoral degrees by both the University of Michigan and Willamette University. In 1940, Peavy was appointed Dean Emeritus and President Emeritus of Oregon State College. His best known book is American Birds, and his pictures and stories appear in many magazines. He is on the editorial staff of Nature Magazine, and a member of the editorial board of Outdoor America. Lately he has taken some very fine moving pictures of animals which appear in the Finley Nature Series. Finley's interest in birds and animals extends far beyond hunting them with the camera, for he has served in many capacities as conservator of wild life. He was State Game Warden from 1911 to 1915, State Biologist from 1915 to 1919, and he has acted as director on boards of such activities as Migratory Bird Act, Izaac Walton League, Audubon Society and Wild Life Conservation. In 1930, he enrolled at Yale University and received a B.F.A. degree in painting in 1934. During the depression years he was employed at a muralist through a Works Progress Administration project and in this capacity executed murals in several Connecticut schools. In 1937, Russo left Connecticut to accept a fellowship to study with Boardman Robinson and George Biddle at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado for one year. During the next ten years he was a social activist and worked for the Federal Education project in Connecticut. In the fall of 1947, Russo moved to Portland and was hired by the Museum Art School the following year to teach painting and art history, remaining on the staff until he retired in 1974. During his tenure at the Museum Art School he became known as Portland's most articulate voice of artists' political, social and artistic rights. In the 1950's, along with friends, he started a co-op op professional artists called Artists Equity. In recent years Russo has been active in various organizations to make art a more visible part of the cultural life in the Northwest; he was one of the original founders of the Portland Center for the Visual Arts. In 1975, he was Chairman of the Oregon Committee for Art in Public Places. In 1977, he was appointed to the Metropolitan Arts Commission; the first artists so honored. A selection of 100 passages and quotes, reminders of the 100 days of genocide that began with the killing of two presidents on April 6, 1994, and led to the killing of 800,000+ Rwandans [p.3] A miniature book, bound in red leather with an embossed skull on the cover and images of human skeletons on the end papers.; This miniature has been letterpress printed on a Vandercook 4 by EVE Press in the year 2004. The text has been extracted from research on war and genocide used to create a series of books to serve as witnesses to the capacity of humans to discriminate, maim and kill. The materials used were in the studio at the time this book came to life. The body type is Franklin Gothic Condensed, 8/9, the display type is ATF Rondo, the ornaments are from my large collection of dingbats. The illustrations are linoleum cuts. The endsheets were printed from a Photoshop illustration converted to a photopolymer plate. A medieval leather binding of red pig suede over sculpted wood boards is planned for this edition of 100.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Inundation of the Nile Year: 1900 The great Nile dam, at the head of the first cataract of the Nile, is 600 miles above Cairo. The dam was built 1898 - 1902 by the Egyptian government for irrigation, the water being utilized for that purpose between May and July, when the river is at its lowest and before the annual inundation begins in the middle of July. The dam is 1-1/4 miles across and is built of Assuan granite laid in Portland cement. On the dam are 180 sluices which have a capacity of emitting 15,000 tons of water per second. It holds 1,000,000,000 cubic meters of water. The dam is filled with the muddy flood coming down from the mountains, and opens again when the Nile is low. As the water lies in the dam, the mud sinks; but as the outlets are along the bottom, when the water goes out it carries the mud with it, and thus distributes it through the canals to farm after farm. The dam has now a maximum height of 130 feet, and at the base is 100 feet thick and 30 feet at the top. The summer rains in Abyssinia raises the level of the Nile in a great flood, the crest of the wave arriving in lower Egypt in October. As soon as the water recedes the grain is planted in the rich soil. The homes are built on the highest land beyond reach of the water. With the exception of the palm tree and the fringe vegetation along the river, there is an absence of the abundant plant life of the regions having suffered sufficient rainfall.
