Tire and other tracks can be seen in the dust of the road. The Major wears some type of Western gear and a low-crowned felt hat. A coil of rope hangs from his saddle. His companion has a high-crowned hat with feathers in the headband and a shirt with decoration on the front. They are about to ride under a cord which has been stretched across the street; the pennants and flags hung from it, including the Stars and Strips and a flag with a cowboy on it, are flapping in the breeze. Behind them ride a number of Native American men in their regalia with feathered bonnets and standards. The parade is riding along one of the main streets of Pendleton. Arrested for vagrancy, he was sentenced to a penal farm, given basic education, and viewed as “extremely intelligent”. While V. collected grapevines one day, a snake wrapped itself around his arm. The terror triggered hysterical-epileptic convulsions, leaving paraplegia. Therefore, he was trained in tailoring. Another attack occurred two months later, his paraplegia disappeared. V. forgot tailoring skills and his character completely changed. Six successive, unique conscious states emerged over a decade in which V. was alternately: (1) a full right side hemiplegic, talkative, rude, overly familiar; (2) a left side hemiplegic (trunk and limbs), reserved, polite, respectful, with no awareness of where he was; (3) a left side hemiplegic (limbs only), polite, remembering nothing of previous life except brief vineyard employment; (4) a full paraplegic, timid, remembering tailoring skills, sad, unaware of current events, unable to read or write; (5) without paralysis, agile, childlike, memories of childhood and attendant abuse recovered; (6) without feeling on left side, convulsing, hallucinating, an excellent reader who believed himself an enlisted marine.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Uniforms of independent military organizations at beginning of Revolution, 1774-1775 Previous to the Revolutionary period, the military uniforms worn were those of the separate militia companies of the Colonies, especially the independent companies in the cities. While the Provincial Militia as a whole were not uniformed in the modern military sense, most of them fought in the garb of the hunter or woodsman. Fond as Washington was of military display and formality, he had recommended its adoption by the troops in his campaigns against the Indians in Virginia. At the extreme left of the view is one of his Virginia riflemen. This form of campaign dress consisted of shirt, trousers, leggings, rifle, bags for bullets and the powder horn hung over the left shoulder. In the campaign against the French fort, Ticonderoga, the New England Rangers wore this type of dress. The uniform of the militiaman seated on the stone shows that he is a member of the Governor's foot-guard organization of Connecticut, an organization still in existence which wore, as shown there, the scarlet coat, bearskin hat and brown gaiters. The Quakers of Pennsylvania finally overcame, in part, their distaste for military organization. Benjamin Franklin was elected Colonel of a regiment of independent companies that had been formed in Philadelphia in view of the impending trouble with the mother country. The soldier at the right is a Philadelphia Trooper of this command dressed in a brown coat with white facings, white breeches, high boots, round leather cap with buck's tail on top and a silver cord, also representing an organization still in existence. The man at the back with rifle in hands is a member of that most famous of all military organizations formed just before the outbreak of the Revolution--the "Minute Men." At the extreme right approaching is a mounted courier, the swiftest message bearer of that period, and in the left background is a colonial farm house. The journal was fired for an alleged “lack of journalistic integrity,” and the editor refused to cite a specific event or let the firing go before a review board. “University Racist” Citing an FBI investigation over the Black Student Union’s protest, it is revealed that the FBI considered the university’s policies and attitudes to be racist. “Angel Flight Digs Hair” Angel Flight, a female portion of the Air Force ROTC, is reported to have harassed a male student for his long hair, and the Student Activities Committee is criticized for failing to take action against the group. “Scabbers for Reeson” Making an exception to its policy of refraining from endorsing any ASOSU group, the Scab Sheet formally endorses David Reesor as Candidate for ASOSU President, followed by a posting of his campaign’s Statement of Policies. Several accusations are challenged, and the committee is charged with acting before hearing a rebuttal to any claims. Reesor’s name was left off of the ballot. “DOODLING AREA” Sponsored by “XYZ,” an area is left blank, presumably for the reader to use for doodles. “WOMEN PLEA FOR EQUAL RIGHTS” The all-campus-sleep-out on April 25th is promoted. The sleep-out protests unequal treatment of women through the existence of a curfew for women. “TOTAL EDUCATION” The Scab Sheet promotes a new idea of education which requires the use of all five human senses to be utilized in the learning process. “THINK!!” A poem is printed: “Out of the libraries Stride the slaughterers. The mothers stand Clutching their children, and Stare searching the skies numbly For the inventions of scholars.” Page 8 “HAVE A HEART, DEE” While agreeing with the sentiment that improvements were made after the human rights controversy, the Scab Sheet claims that such improvements are only due to the black student population decreasing by half. Dee Andros is encouraged to “grow up” and grow a heart. “ROTC SUCKS” The Scab Sheet labels the military as obsolete and questions its existence at OSU. The ROTC program is accused of conditioning its students into mindless killers, labeling leadership as merely the ability to follow orders. Several accusations are challenged, and the committee is charged with acting before hearing a rebuttal to any claims. Page 7 “SAC Sucks (cont’d)” The critique of the SAC is continued as the Scab Sheet suggests that the SAC should be investigated. “Reesor Raps” ASOSU presidential candidate David Reesor accuses the Student Activities Committee of unfair treatment after threatening to take action through an injunction against the election to take place that same day. Reesor’s name was left off of the ballot. “DOODLING AREA” Sponsored by “XYZ,” an area is left blank, presumably for the reader to use for doodles. “WOMEN PLEA FOR EQUAL RIGHTS” The all-campus-sleep-out on April 25th is promoted. The sleep-out protests unequal treatment of women through the existence of a curfew for women. “TOTAL EDUCATION” The Scab Sheet promotes a new idea of education which requires the use of all five human senses to be utilized in the learning process. “THINK!!” A poem is printed: “Out of the libraries Stride the slaughterers. The mothers stand Clutching their children, and Stare searching the skies numbly For the inventions of scholars.” Page 8 “HAVE A HEART, DEE” While agreeing with the sentiment that improvements were made after the human rights controversy, the Scab Sheet claims that such improvements are only due to the black student population decreasing by half. Dee Andros is encouraged to “grow up” and grow a heart. “ROTC SUCKS” The Scab Sheet labels the military as obsolete and questions its existence at OSU. The uniform at the extreme left is that of one of the Pennsylvania regiments which appeared in brown with buff or white facings. All who could procure them wore buckskin breeches. Because it was in demand and obtainable on every farm, brown was the prevalent hue of cloth manufactured in this country and was extensively used for military coats in the Colonies and during the Revolution. While Congress decided upon the color, it was not able to supply the cloth in sufficient quantity to uniform the army. Some of the states undertook the supplying of uniforms as far as possible for their own soldiers. The government of Connecticut had on hand a quantity of scarlet coats and sent those to the men in the field until the supply was exhausted. Occassionally a lot of enemies' uniforms fell into the hands of the Continental patriots. If there was time to do it, these were dyed brown or blue, but they were sometimes worn without change which led to bad mistakes of friends and foes on the battlefield. The uniform of the third solider from the left was that of the Second South Carolina regiment in which Frances Marion was a Captain. It was at this uniform that General Gates was said to have laughed. It consisted of a close round bodied jacket of coarse texture, a leather cap with a silver cresecent in front, and inscribed with the words, "Liberty or Death." When in New York in 1776, Washington issued a general order for improving the uniforms and clothing of the Army, he directed the use of the hunter's dress which he had used for the Virginia Militia years before and which the New England Rangers had used in the French and Indian War, for those troops which had not already been provided for. The white hunter's outfit was also the dress of the first troops raised by the authority of the Continental Congress, the famous riflemen from Virginia, Maryland and Western Pennsylvania. It consisted of white shirts and trousers reaching to the ankles and fitted gaiter fashion about the leg below the knee and extending over the moccasins. Round the waist was a leather belt in which was stuck a hunting knife. Over the shoulder was another belt from which hung sometimes a cartridge box, but generally a powder horn. The trimmings of the shirts and trousers generally consisted of ravellings of the linen or woolen material of which the garments were made. This dress was encouraged, first because it was cheaper. It was also more convenient in warm weather. There was, however, another and strategic reason for Washington's recommending this hunter dress. This was to carry terror to the enemy who believed every person so dressed to be a complete marksman. The deadly precision of the rifle in the hands of an old hunter inspired constant fear in the hearts of the well drilled British Regulars.
