The site has been identified as being on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The man wears cloth work pants with suspenders, a long-sleeved cloth shirt, shoes, and a brimmed hat. A pipe is in his mouth. He is holding the hand of his smallest child, who appears to be dressed in a long-sleeved white cloth frock with smocking and a flat white hat. The two oldest daughters wear long-sleeved darker cloth dresses that come halfway down their calves, and hats with large flat brims. The fourth girl appears to be wearing an apron with a starched collar over a white cloth dress, and is not wearing a hat. All girls wear shoes or boots and socks. The three oldest girls are holding each other's hands. Behind them stands a canvas tipi supported by poles, with its entrance fastened back to show piles of bedding within. Behind the man, on the left of the photograph, is a stack of split firewood and a couple of wooden boxes. Nearby stands an object that appears to be a washer and wringer for laundry.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Anti-lepus journal : travels with Howard, v16 Author: Ellis, Elsi Vassdal Covered in rabbit fur; This journal was inspired by the call for work for the Fourth Triennial Book Arts Exhibition. The theme: Rabbit and House. During Fall 2005 I had the privilege of teaching a junior honors course on the art of the book (Book as Object of Fear and Desire). Umberto Eco's The name of the rose served as the center of our exploration of manuscript traditions, religion, heresy and anything medieval. My students were charged with the task of turning a traditional term paper into a medieval manuscript sewn on cords, laced into wood boards, and finished off with or without leather. My first idea for the call was to create a heretical text, The Gospel of Rabbit. Once I got started writing it I realized what a task it would be. My next idea was to create a character - the Anti-Lepus (rabbit) hunter who would try to uncover the sinister plot of rabbits and hares throughout the world in their goal to eliminate all humans. Some of the information is based upon historical research. The images are combinations of copyright free images (Corel & internet), sketches based upon images, created facsimiles, family photos, and original art , all gently or not so gently massaged in Photoshop following scanning [The artist/author at the age of eight is holding the bunny on the beach.] The book was assembled and imposed on a Mac G4 in InDesign and printed in an edition of 10 on an Epson le86 ink jet printer with archival inks. The handwriting font is Texas Hero. Rabbit fur purchased in Portland, Oregon, has been used for the exterior binding. It is of french design and built of stone, and the interior is finished in white marble, gold-bronze ornamentation's and rich red drapery and upholstery It is not quite as large as the Metropolitan, the two lower tiers of boxes are occupied by the families of the "Four Hundred", for their grand opera down there is just as much of a social function with them as it is with the smart set in our greatest city; and, as their season is in July and August--winter months with them--not a few of the singers that are heard at the Metropolitan later on are heard there in their season. Above the boxes are two balconies and a gallery where the gods congregate and howl for encores for all the world like our own.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Slave block, St. Louis Hotel, New Orleans, La. Year: 1920 Having come of age, Lincoln left the family and “struck out for himself”. He had to “take jobs whenever he could get them”. The first of these carried him again as a flatboat hand to New Orleans. There something happened that made a lasting impression on his soul: he witnessed a slave auction. “His heart bled,” wrote one of his companions; “said nothing much; was silent; looked bad. I can say, knowing it, that it was on this trip that he formed his opinion on slavery. It ran its iron in him then and there, May, 1831. I have heard his say so often.” Then he lived several years at New Salem in Illinois, a small mushroom village, with a mill, some “stores” and whiskey shops, that rose quickly, and soon disappeared again. It was a desolate, disjointed, half-loitering life, without any other aim than to gain food and shelter from day to day. He served as pilot on a steamboat trip, then as clerk in a store and a mill; business failing he was adrift for some time.
