This “exercises” the salmon in the expectation that improving swimming ability will improve their survival during smolt migration, resulting in better survival to adulthood. We examined the effect of variable moderate flow rates (0.25-0.75 body lengths per second) on growth and physiology of juvenile chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and their ability to withstand acute stress, survive downstream migration and return as adults. Over the 5-8 month sampling period, mean length, weight and condition factor increased similarly in both the exercised and control groups. Mean plasma glucose levels were similar in each treatment group and peaked in early spring of each year. Hematocrit did not vary in a consistent trend for either treatment group or cohort. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) decreased in the 1994 cohort control group and increased in the 1995 cohort exercised group. In both cohorts, liver glycogen levels decreased through the winter and continued to decline in the 1994 cohort while in the 1995 cohort there was a significant peak in liver glycogen levels in each group during March 1997. Following stress, mean plasma glucose and cortisol levels increased, mean hematocrit varied inconsistently, mean HSI generally decreased, mean CSI decreased inconsistently in the 1995 cohort and mean liver glycogen level did not change. Mean survival of smolts to Lower Granite Dam did not vary between treatment groups with detection rates ranging narrowly from 58.7-60.7%. Mean percentage of adults returning at age 3 was higher for exercised salmon than for controls and a higher percentage of controls returned at age 5 than exercised salmon. Mean smolt-to-adult survival rate varied significantly between cohorts but there was no difference in mean survival rate between treatment groups. Variation within cohorts was greater between the exercised raceways than the controls, indicating that additional years of study are needed to compensate for large differences in survival between cohorts to make any conclusions regarding differences between treatments. Our results provide little evidence that rearing chinook salmon under a moderately increased and seasonally variable flow regime provided any benefit to the salmon over a steady low flow. Oncorhynchus mykiss exhibit a complex of life-history strategies ranging from residency in small headwater streams to anadromy involving migrations of hundreds of kilometers. In the Grande Ronde River basin of northeast Oregon, both resident and anadromous life-history forms coexist, and thus populations found there likely exhibit partial migration. Partial migration may have important consequences for anadromous species listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The recent decline of summer steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) populations in the lower Snake River has prompted their listing under the ESA. Declines in steelhead are potentially due to elevated mortality rates associated with anadromous migrations. If resident and anadromous life-history characteristics result from a phenotypically plastic trait (i.e. a genetic trait that is highly variable due to influences from environmental factors), then elevated mortality associated with the anadromous type may be shifting the populations towards residency. Further, although the anadromous expression of the trait may be declining, the trait would not necessarily be lost. Identification of the plasticity of these traits would then be important for the management of these populations. We investigated life history traits of O. mykiss with studies in both the hatchery and natural environment. We anticipated that these complimentary approaches would allow us to evaluate the relationship between the two life-history forms. They should further allow us to explore the feasibility of using hatcheries to produce anadromous progeny from resident parents if the number of anadromous life-history forms becomes severely depressed. The overall goal of this study was to determine the plasticity of life history forms, specifically the ability of resident adults to produce anadromous progeny. Natural escapement declines in the Grande Ronde Basin have been severe and parallel those of other Snake River populations. Reduced productivity has primarily been attributed to increased mortality associated with downstream and upstream migration past eight dams and reservoirs in the Snake and Columbia rivers. Reduced spawner numbers, combined with human manipulation of previously important spawning and rearing habitat in the Grande Ronde Basin, have resulted in decreased spawning distribution and population fragmentation of chinook salmon in the Grande Ronde Basin (Figure 1; Table 1). Escapement of spring/summer chinook salmon in the Snake River basin included 1,799 adults in 1995, less than half of the previous record low of 3,913 adults in 1994. Catherine Creek, Grande Ronde River and Lostine River were historically three of the most productive populations in the Grande Ronde Basin (Carmichael and Boyce 1986). However, productivity of these populations has been poor for recent brood years. Escapement (based on total redd counts) in Catherine Creek and Grande Ronde and Lostine rivers dropped to alarmingly low levels in 1994 and 1995. A total of 11, 3 and 16 redds were observed in 1994 in Catherine Creek, upper Grande Ronde River and Lostine River, respectively, and 14, 6 and 11 redds were observed in those same streams in 1995. Natural escapement declines in the Grande Ronde Basin have been severe and parallel those of other Snake River populations. Reduced productivity has primarily been attributed to increased mortality associated with downstream and upstream migration past eight dams and reservoirs in the Snake and Columbia rivers. Reduced spawner numbers, combined with human manipulation of previously important spawning and rearing habitat in the Grande Ronde Basin, have resulted in decreased spawning distribution and population fragmentation of chinook salmon in the Grande Ronde Basin (Figure 1; Table 1). Escapement of spring/summer chinook salmon in the Snake River basin included 1,799 adults in 1995, less than half of the previous record low of 3,913 adults in 1994. Catherine Creek, Grande Ronde River and Lostine River were historically three of the most productive populations in the Grande Ronde Basin (Carmichael and Boyce 1986). However, productivity of these populations has been poor for recent brood years. This information is both collected and analyzed based on a hierarchical system of regions, basins, streams, reaches, and habitat units. Supervisors are responsible for collecting the general information on regions and basins and for directing the activities of the survey crews.
