These summaries outline aquatic and terrestrial restoration priorities and geographic focus areas within three major themes: 1) Restoration of habitat connectivity (e.g., fish passage and wildlife corridors); 2) Restoration of key watershed processes and functions (e.g., large wood delivery, water flows, sediment transport, and disturbance regimes); and 3) Restoration of aquatic, riparian, wetland, and upland habitats, including addressing habitats for ESA-listed species and areas that impact water quality. Watersheds included: Scappoose Bay, Columbia Slough, Lower Willamette, Johnson, Tryon, Fanno Creeks, Clackamas, Tualatin, Yamhill & Chehalem, Molalla, Pudding, Glenn-Gibson, Greater Salem-Keizer Area, Rickreall, Santiam, Luckiamute, Calapooia, Mary's, Long Tom, McKenzie, Coast Fork Willamette, Middle Fork Willamette, Middle & Upper Willamette. Because of the paucity of information and concerns of declining lamprey population in the Pacific Northwest, the Applegate River Watershed Council (ARWC) with the Medford District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) collaborated to study lamprey populations in the Applegate River watershed of southwest Oregon (Close et al. 1995, Larson & Belchik 1998, Kostow 2002). The objectives of the study included: (1) Identifying species composition; (2) determining the distribution of lamprey species; and (3) relating the distribution of lamprey ammocoetes (juveniles or larvae) to physical stream characteristics. This paper summarizes the life histories of the two most common lamprey species in the Oregon, the Pacific (Lampetra tridentata) and Western Brook (Lampetra richardsoni), details the methods of study, reports the results and summarizes the findings. Also included are recommendations and suggestions for future lamprey work in the Applegate basin. The purpose of the review is threefold: 1) provide an analysis of the current status and trend in coho populations, their habitat, and related threats; 2) provide NOAA Fisheries with information it requires to determine whether formalized conservation efforts within the ESU justify not listing coho under the Endangered Species Act as outlined in their Policy for Evaluation of Conservation Efforts; and 3) provide information to state agencies, watershed councils, and others participating in the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds (OPSW) so they may assess the success of their OPSW programs and modify them where necessary to better achieve their objectives (i.e. adaptive management). This report describes the current status and trend of instream physical habitat for coho in the ESU as well as summarizes and evaluates instream habitat restoration activities conducted from 1997-2003.
