It is our goal to be a proactive partner to a variety of interested parties; state, federal and private interests, whose goals and missions are aligned with ours to restore and strengthen not only our native fish populations, but the habitat they are found in and depend on. The fisheries department believes strongly in restoration, habitat improvement and success for our streams, rivers, watershed, and forest; dedicating ourselves daily to the strategic planning and goals of the bull trout monitoring program summarized in this report. The lake 3,582 feet and has an average depth of 134 feet. Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and mountain whitefish (Prosopium williamsoni) are the only fish native to the lake. However, the lake now has lake trout, kokanee, and tui chub. The Department samples the lake annually to assess species composition, fish size, and fish health. It was first filled with water in 1954 and first stocked with trout in 1955. Access is via a 4 mi paved road from the North Umpqua Highway (Oregon 138}. The US Forest Service manages the land surrounding the reservoir and maintains the campgrounds. A resort is present. In September 1980, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission accepted the Department's recommendation to continue to manage Lemolo Reservoir for a wild brown trout fishery. The Commission also adopted a regulation of 5 trout 6 inches or over per day beginning in 1981. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Department is currently managing the Metolius River from Lake Creek to Candle Creek (11 miles) with annual releases of hatchery yearling rainbow trout. The Williamson River is the major tributary to Klamath Lake and prior to liquidation of the Klamath Indian reservation in 1954, little physical and biological data were gathered as the system was essentially within the reservation boundaries. Since 1968, however, Department activities have centered on life-history studies. The lower Williamson, in conjunction with Klamath Lake, is a productive stream and its capability to produce wild trout must be assured.
