Monitoring is currently designed to provide annual abundance and distribution information at the stratum-scale (described in Jepsen and Leader 2007) for each of several coho evolutionarily significant units (ESU’s) and steelhead distinct population segments (DPS’s), and to eventually use these annual data to provide longterm trend information. Ultimately these juvenile fish data will be used to investigate relationships between freshwater habitat characteristics, adult spawner abundance, and juvenile recruitment. This progress report summarizes abundance and distribution data collected in 2007 for each ESU and DPS, and for the Oregon Coast Coho ESU includes a time series for abundance data for all years of monitoring. A fuller description of the OCC, OCS, SONCC and KMPS sampling frames, study design and survey methods, is found in Jepsen and Rodgers (2004) and for the LCRC and LCRS frames in Jepsen and Leader (2007). The strata are diagramed in Figure 1 and organized in subsequent tables. At a subset of the OCC sites, this project also collects water temperature data and macroinvertebrate data in conjunction with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. These data will be reported separately, and can be requested from project staff. In addition, the project re-initiated a snorkel and electrofishing verification study in the Smith River basin, which will be summarized in a separate report. Job 4 Summary: Our goal is to determine the factors important in limiting the production of wild and hatchery reared coho salmon in Oregon. Tasks for FY 1982: During FY 1982 we planned to: (1) prepare a review paper on past coho release strategies and develop recommendations for changes that may increase coho production from Oregon hatcheries; (2) complete all logistics and implement, the release of three groups of coho in the ocean release experiment; and (3) develop an historical data base of physical oceanographic factors that may influence coho salmon survival and growth. Accomplishments in FY 1982: An information report on coho release strategies was completed (Johnson 1982). The ocean release experiment was conducted in June 1982. We have obtained and tabulated historical records of upwelling indices, sea level measurements, sea surface temperature records, and spring upwelling transition dates. The lake and adjacent lands, are managed by the Forest under recreation and visual classifications. The water of the lake is state-owned and the fish resources are managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW). Hosmer Lake is a natural lake located about 40 miles west of Bend via County Road 46 (Century Drive) and Forest Road 470. One main campground, one overflow campground and a concrete boat ramp are managed by the Deschutes National Forest. Hosmer Lake covers 160 surface acres and lies at an elevation of 4,950 feet. Maximum water depth is 11 feet and most of the lake is very shallow. The only inlet to the lake is Quinn Creek, a spring-fed stream with a flow of 25 cfs and a near-constant temperature of 42°F. Hosmer Lake contains Atlantic salmon ("Salmo salar") and brook trout ("Salvelinus fontinalis"). The lake was chemically treated in 1957 to remove a population of carp ("Cyprinus carpio"), Tui chub ("Siphateles bicolor") and brook trout. The treatment successfully removed all carp and Tui chub, but not all brook trout. Non-game fish have not reappeared since 1957. Originally, it was hoped the Atlantic salmon would spawn successfully in Quinn Creek. However, they cannot ascend the six-foot falls in lower Quinn Creek. The pumice bottom and annual anchor-ice scouring also nullifies egg development. The population of salmon at Hosmer has been maintained soley by hatchery fish since 1958. There are few dams that substantially affect anadromous fish runs. Water withdrawals impact only a small portion of the total miles of stream habitat. Water quality and temperatures are suitable for salmonids for the entire year in most areas. Rainfall throughout the area is heavy, resulting in a high density of streams relative to watershed area. The Siuslaw River system alone has over one thousand contiguous miles of stream suitable for salmonids. Some of these stream reaches are highly productive, while others are severely degraded. The sustainability of the North Umpqua steelhead population and its' habitat is a very high priority. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) develops, on a continuing basis, practices designed to ensure the health and viability of this population. However, continued management success depends critically on the availability of data necessary for a detailed understanding of relevant life history issues. To address these data needs, ODFW began a radio-telemetry study of North Umpqua steelhead in June of 1998. Tagging at Winchester dam was terminated 10/26/00 but monitoring continued until the end of May 2001. This study has provided detailed information on movement patterns of adult steelhead in the basin at a level that is available in no other way and is the most comprehensive project of its type for the Umpqua Basin. A radio tagging study whose scope was limited to the Steamboat Creek subbasin was carried out previously (Wroble, 1990). Also, a previous study of temperature trends in that subbasin is of interest (Hostetler, 1991). Twenty of these lakes were located and named by the survey crew. Of this group of 20, four had fish present, although there was no recorded name or stocking record. An additional 27 potholes and shallow lakes were explored and followed to be unsuitable for fish. These factors are listed in the Appendix. Data collected on the lakes included water and air temperatures, the approximate depth and bottom types, presence of natural reproduction, angling pressure and the general condition of the fish population. Special attention was paid to the accessibility of the lakes. A sample of the fish was taken by angling or gill net sets. The female fish were weighed, measured and examined for sexual maturity. The degree of sexual maturity was classed as mature, maturing and immature. The lakes, in general, are so widely separated in this section of the Cascade that it is difficult to group them in specific basins, therefore, these lakes have been grouped in the Willamette National Forest and the Mt. Hood National Forest watershed 2 and Watershed 3, respectively. To protect this population, we need to more fully understand the movement and habitat use of bull trout in the South Fork McKenzie watershed, and to develop an emergency action plan should environmental conditions become detrimental to the overall health of the population. Recommendations from this project will be made to the Environmental Coordination Committee in the event that actions to protect bull trout become necessary.
