The 148 acre lake is within the Willamette National Forest at an elevation of 3,012 feet. Clear Lake is biologically unusual. Although the underwater trees are not petrified, decomposition has been very slow because of the _low level of biological activity in the water. Biological activity is confined mainly to benthic algae in the northern end of the lake and to planktonic diatoms (primarily "Asterionella" and "Fragilaria") in the southern portion. Cutthroat trout is apparently the only indigenous salmonid species in Clear Lake. A 1922 Forest Service report describes Fish Lake and Hackleman Creek as being the most important spawning and juvenile rearing habitat for Clear Lake trout. The proposed project evaluates stream temperature and riparian condition before and after harvesting. Sites will be evaluated on both privately-owned and state-owed forestland. A pre/post- study design that establishes control, treatment, and downstream reaches, 2 years prior to harvest is proposed. Temperature, channel, overstory and understory riparian characteristics will be monitored two years prior to harvest and for 5 years after harvesting to evaluate harvest effects and recovery rates. The U.S. Forest Service manages the estuary as part of the Cascade Head Scenic Research Area with the goal to rehabilitate the estuary “to its condition prior to the existing diking and agricultural use.” To achieve this goal, the U.S. Forest Service has completed three dike removal projects at 9-year intervals beginning in 1978. These projects created a patchwork of restored marshes in various stages of recovery, providing a natural laboratory for studying marsh restoration processes and their effects on estuarine rearing salmonids. Our Sea Grant-funded research, which is a cooperative study with researchers from the University of Washington, has four objectives: (1) describe salmon species use of undiked reference and recovering marshes; (2) compare diets of juvenile salmon among reference and diked marshes of different recovery ages; (3) compare availability and distribution of prey organisms consumed by juvenile salmon; and (4) assess geomorphological and ecological indicators (“metrics”) of restored wetlands and relationships to salmon use. This report describes the results of fish distribution and abundance surveys. Results of the other objectives are described in Gray et al. (In Review). Access from Highway 22 is via USFS road 2255 and a two mile hike from the trailhead. Marion Lake has long been a popular recreational area and had been planned for extensive development by the Forest Service as early as 1913. Most of the plans never materialized, although two summer cabins and a guard station were constructed by 1928 and a permit was issued to the Marion Lake Boatowners' Association for construction of a boat house in 1954. About 140 boats were being stored at Marion Lake when it was absorbed into the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness in 1968. Boats and structures have since been removed and the area left to return to its natural state. Recreational and angler use remains heavy. According to Forest Service estimates, Marion Lake accommodates 22,000 visitor days/year, which is about 30 percent of the entire use in the Mt. Jefferson wilderness. In November 1986, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission accepted the Department's recommendation to manage Marion Lake for wild and hatchery trout. There has been continual demand by sportsmen that the South Umpqua Falls be supplied with fish ladders to permit safe ascent of sea-run species to spawning grounds above the falls. Study of this problem was undertaken as a definite part of the survey work described herein. The stream run and lake survey work was initiated by the Forest Service in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries during the summer of 1937. Emphasis was placed on the detailed studies relating to the physical and biological factors upon which it would be possible to recommend adequate stocking policies. No study of chemical conditions whatsoever was made for two reasons, first, lack of equipment prevented making gas analyses and, second, such studies seemed unnecessary by reason of the fact that there is no pollution present in the streams surveyed and all of them are well aerated, clean, rapid flowing mountain streams. Chemical conditions as shown by general observations were quite suitable and it is only whore natural or artificial pollutants occur in great abundance that chemical analyses would aid in determining tho basic effects of some of those fishes and their food organisms present in streams.
