They also produce naturally in numerous tributaries and the upper mainstern. Numbers for early-run coho that return to spawn naturally are represented best by Marmot Darn counts. Although some spawning habitat for coho exists below Marmot Darn, the optimum tributaries are above the darn in upper tributaries and side channels of the mainstem. Construction of Marmot Dam and the Bull Run Reservoir system has reduced the available habitat historically used by coho salmon. Although Marmot Darn is laddered, flows for many years after construction were not adequate to attract or allow passage above the dam. Minimum flow agreements now maintain flows adequate for fish passage and attraction. The Bull Run River remains blocked for anadrornous fish passage above the dam for Reservoir 2; the city of Portland mitigates for the loss of habitat by funding the release of juvenile fish elsewhere in the subbasin. We compared run timing based on arrival time at the weir and found that naturally reared Chinook salmon arrived earlier than hatchery-reared fish in all 16 years. Carcasses of naturally reared fish of either or both sexes were recovered on the spawning grounds earlier than carcasses of hatchery-reared fish for all years combined and during 5 of 16 years, indicating earlier spawning by naturally reared fish. We compared spawning distribution using the percent of female carcasses recovered in each spawning ground survey reach. The percent recovery of the carcasses of naturally reared females was greater in reaches above the weir than below the weir and these carcasses were farther upstream than those of hatchery-reared females. For females of hatchery origin, carcasses were more commonly found in reaches closer to and below the weir (the smolt release location). Alternate management strategies designed to improve the maintenance of genetic integrity and life history characteristics of the Imnaha River Chinook salmon population should be considered, implemented, and evaluated. Collection strategies should be modified to ensure that the hatchery broodstock is representative of the entire natural run, and release strategies should be developed to promote a spawning distribution of hatchery adults that mimics the distribution of natural imnaha Chinook salmon. Most of the projected returns were from the Rapid River stock, a non-native hatchery stock of salmon that was no longer in use in the basin due to its non-local origin and high stray rates. Concern over potential disease transmission to Endangered Species Act listed stocks of Chinook salmon being reared at Lookingglass Fish Hatchery led to a management decision to not allow Chinook salmon spawning above the hatchery and to limit spawning to a short section of stream below the hatchery water intake. Because most returning Chinook salmon were from a stock that was no longer in use in hatchery programs in the basin and co-managers had decided that it was undesirable that they spawn in the wild, co-managers decided to remove as many as possible from the stream by providing recreational and tribal fishing opportunities. Recreational angling for Chinook salmon was allowed on Lookingglass Creek from 26 May through 1 July 2001. An intensive creel survey was conducted to monitor angling effort, catch rates and impacts on nontarget stocks and species. We conducted 1,606 angler interviews during the 2001 season on Lookingglass Creek. We estimate that 741 Chinook salmon were caught and 541 were kept by anglers. Catch rates were good throughout the season with mean catch rates of 12.0 and 12.3 h/fish in May and June, respectively, and 8.7 h/fish on 1 July. Past studies (e.g. Giger 1972, Sumner 1972, Tipping 1981) indicated that estuaries serve primarily as a migratory corridor or short-term rearing environment. However, recent advances in marking and tracking technology have permitted researchers to gain a better understanding of the complex migratory and habitat use patterns of cutthroat. Krentz (2007) conducted studies in Salmon River on the central Oregon coast to explore migratory patterns of cutthroat and examine the role of the estuary as a rearing environment. Coastal cutthroat trout reared for extended periods of time throughout the available channel habitats in Salmon River estuary (Krentz 2007) during spring, summer, and fall. The estuarine resident population appeared to represent a significant portion of the migratory individuals, and included all older age classes. Estuary growth was similar to that of their ocean migrant counterparts, and survival in the estuary was high. Because cutthroat were collected and marked primarily within the estuary (Krentz 2007), it is unclear what portion of the migrant population reared in the estuary relative to the watershed or ocean, or whether the tagged group was representative of the migratory populations. The current study was designed to track a representative sample of the downstream migrant population, and assess the relative success (survival) of the estuary and ocean migrants. Similar studies in the Columbia River documented directed and rapid migration through the estuary (Zydlewski et al. 2008, Hering et al. 2009). With rare exception, cutthroat trout were not observed to rear in the estuary. In addition, many fish disappeared before reaching the ocean and few of the ocean migrants returned to the natal tributary. In this study we replicated the study design used in the Columbia River studies to further comparisons of estuary migration and rearing strategies between the two estuaries.
