  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Oregon Chub Investigations at Hospital Pond, 2000-2008; Information Reports Number 2009-07 Abstract -- Previous studies suggested relationships between Lookout Point Reservoir water elevations, Hospital Pond water levels and temperatures, and Oregon chub spawning and recruitment in the pond. Hospital Pond is fed by large cold springs and spawning only occurs when the reservoir is nearly full and floods the pond terrace. Changes in flow management in the Middle Fork Willamette River occurred in 2000, following the listing of Willamette spring chinook and winter steelhead, and resulted in changes in the frequency and magnitude of reservoir filling and the length of time the reservoir would remain full. The US Army Corps of Engineers modified the pond in an attempt to allow managers the ability to manage water levels and temperatures in Hospital Pond independently from reservoir levels. We found that these modifications were largely unsuccessful. We found that strong year-classes were infrequent and occurred in several, but not all of the years, when the reservoir filled. Our data also suggests that strong year-classes may limit the recruitment of the following year-class through density-dependent mechanisms, i.e. competition for food and space. If the reservoir continues to fill every few years, as it has for the last decade, we feel that that Oregon chub recruitment in Hospital Pond will be adequate to maintain a stable population into the future. The climate of this region is temperate and semiarid, characterized by low annual precipitation, low winter temperatures, and high summer temperatures. The fishery consists of warm-water game fish and trout. McKay and Cold Springs Reservoirs provide both types of fisheries while the remainder of the impoundments provide angling on stocked rainbow trout. The season is open the entire year on these waters with the exception of McKay and Cold Springs Reservoirs which are closed during the waterfowl nesting period. Since this area has only a limited supply of surface water, emphasis is being put on the construction of reservoirs which would impound runoff waters for angling and other recreation uses. At present, there are only six impoundments within the tri-county area. and these come far from meeting the public demand. An additional 15 reservoirs have been recommended for future development in order to provide adequate public fishing access. Historically the Calapooia River marked the upper end of winter steelhead distribution in the Willamette Basin, and a spawning tributary for spring chinook. These are both DPS/ESU listed species, and little is known about their distribution and life history in the Calapooia River. A Rapid Bioassessment was completed in 2015 as well as winter steelhead redd survey in 2017 to try and establish baseline data including spawning gravel abundance/seeding availability, adult escapement, a foundation for long term trend analysis, as well as identify anchor habitats. The survey was also intended to inform ODFW with vital information regarding the possibility of jump-start seeding the Calapooia with Chinook, as well as guide the Calapooia WC’s restoration approach in this vital area. The 2017 return of Winter steelhead over the Willamette Falls (pinch point for all anadromy in the Willamette Valley) was the lowest on record, and the CWC and partners do not feel a proper baseline was established. The CWC proposes to complete 2 years of STW redd Surveys to create a baseline of adult escapement from 2 different cohorts, as well as collect summer water temperature data through the deployment of Hobo temperature loggers. This data can be used to create a reach wide restoration plan that will focus CWC restoration efforts in areas where they will be the most efficient and effective. Partners include ODFW, Weyerhaeuser, US Forest Service, Miners Association, and private residents.
