Year: 2014 The Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center (SOREC) is recognized throughout Southern Oregon for its deep commitment to and support of agricultural research, sustainable growing practices, humane animal husbandry and healthy living. Historically, SOREC consists of the Jackson County Extension Service and the Southern Oregon Experiment Station. Both of SOREC’s units serve as the front door to Oregon State University, Oregon’s Land Grant University, and its resources. In addition to its support of farming and ranching, SOREC maintains demonstration fields, and also runs community programs such as Master Gardeners, 4-H, Food Preservers, Land Stewards. SOREC staff was instrumental in the growth of the pear industry in Southern Oregon and spearheaded the emergence of grape growing and wine making in the 1970s and 1980s. The Southern Oregon Experiment Station was established in 1911, and was located south of Phoenix at the Jackson County Poor Farm where the Dog Pound is located today. There were three other local Experiment Stations until 1958 when all were combined and relocated to the current Hanley Road location. The Extension office was first located in 1914 in the basement of the Jackson County Courthouse, later moving to Maple Grove Drive in south Medford, next to the old Fair Grounds. When the county began development of the south Medford I5 interchange in 1994, the Extension was moved to the Hanley Road location.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Vortex Red Author: Del Rio Vineyards and Winery (Or.), Jolee Wallace Located along the Rogue River just north of Gold Hill, Del Rio Vineyards and Winery is the home of one of the largest vineyards in Southern Oregon. Del Rio began its existence as the small community of Rock Point, founded by J.B. White in the early 1850's. White received the land in exchange for his services in the Rogue Indian Wars. In 1863, he sold his homestead to L.J. White, who built the Rock Point Hotel, which opened in 1865. In 1907, the hotel and surrounding land were sold to F.K. Deuel and others. The property grew from a one-acre family orchard to an eight hundred acre valley orchard. Del Rio Orchards were planted during a rapid period of growth in the Rogue Valley known as the "pear boom". The Orchard and hotel remained in the Deuel family until 1997, when Lee and Margaret Traynham of California purchased the property. The Traynhams began restoration of the Rock Point Hotel, one of the oldest structures in Southern Oregon. They also began the transformation of a third generation pear orchard into one of Southern Oregon's premium wine grape vineyards. De Rio Vineyards presently is planted to over 200,000 vines, twelve varietals, and 17 clones. Del Rio supplies premium wine grapes to over 20 vintners in Oregon and California.
