In this report are many kinds of basic information about the soils in the area. This information can be helpful in making decisions about the management of irrigated soils for optimum crop production, in planning land uses for urban and suburban areas, and in determining the needs for many other uses, for example, forestry, range, wildlife, and recreation. This soil survey has been prepared for many different users. Farmers can use it to help select the most suitable crop for the kind of soil; ranchers can use it to determine amount of forage production and the kinds of plants most suited to range or woodland; foresters can use the survey to find information about kinds of trees, potential for tree growth, and special soil features. The report provides an update on the accomplishments and continuing efforts of people throughout Oregon to improve and protect clean water and recover and maintain healthy populations offish and wildlife in our watersheds. The Oregon Plan is unique because it engages communities in the restoration and long-term stewardship of their watersheds. This extraordinary effort encourages local partnerships and voluntary actions to improve the conditions of our watersheds. Over the years, these actions have made Oregon a national leader in local cooperative conservation. This report collects project and condition data, voluntary private lands restoration information, and agency program accomplishments under the Oregon Plan. Consistent with the past two reports, this document continues to provide specific data on each of the state's fifteen reporting basins. A new element to this report is the inclusion of stories about the people, partnerships, and on-the-ground projects that are benefiting watersheds and communities across the state. He was a man of kindly disposition but resolute character and was a genius in leadership. He commanded obedience but retained the respect and affection of his subordinates and also of the Indians who dealth with his company. Dr. McLoughlin combined far-seeing statesmanship with efficient business ability and made his region the most profitable part of the Hudson Bay Co's domain in the fur trade. He was hospitable to the missionaries and earlier settlers and contributed greatly to the development of Oregon through the encouragement of industry. He left the Hudson Bay Co. in 1845 and made his home at Oregon City until his death. He is buried in the Catholic church yard at Oregon City. F.V. Holman says 'Of all men whose lives and deeds are essential parts of the Oregon country, Dr. John Mc Loughlin stands supremely first - there is no second. His life and character illustrate the kinship of man to God.' Lyman says of Dr. Mc Loughlin, 'He was particularly one who wrote his life in deeds.' The twenty years of Oregon history from 1824 to 1844 is pre-eminently the age of McLoughlin. That Oregon did not pass through war - between the United States and England - was due beyond all question to Mc Loughlin.' When he severed his relationship with that company he established himself at this place and in 1846 built this home on the east side of the present Main Street of Oregon City, opposite the Oregon City Woolen Mills. Several years ago people wishing to honor the memory of Dr. McLoughlin formed an association, purchased this house, and moved it to a location which they named McLoughlin Park just north of Seventh Street on the bluff in Oregon City. This old home of the benevelent pioneer fur trader has been repaired and renovated and now stands as a memorial to Dr. McLoughlin - kindly autocrat of the early Northwest, friend of Oregon and founder of Oregon City. This is the business and financial center of New York city, and the office buildings are commonly known as skyscrapers because they are so high. The waterfront here is lined with long piers which jut out into the river. Between them are the deep-water docks which receive the largest ocean lines. The city of New York has the largest population of all the cities in the world except Greater London and outranks all others in export and import trade. Its excellent harbor affords a port for the largest vessels. Raw materials may be brought from all parts of the world. This location on the seashore, therefore, is one of the most desirable places in the United States for a city. In addition, New York has the advantage of being at the mouth of an important river. Northward from New York is the busy highway of travel through the valley of the Hudson, and equally important is the valley of the Mohawk, leading westward from Albany. By the Hudson-Mohawk, route supplies of raw material for manufacture, and great quantities of food, are brought from the rich agricultural lands of the interior. During the French and Indian War and the American Revolution the valley of the Hudson was a center of great struggle, for its possession by an enemy meant the separation of the only two thickly settled districts of American and the isolation of New England. In addition to its commerical advantages, New York is but a short distance from a large supply of fuel. From the Appalachian fields coal and oil are quickly and easily brought to the city for the use in the large factories. The leading industries in New York are the manufacture of clothing and machinery, printing and book-making, meat-packing, and the refining of sugar. New York has become the leading financial center of the world. There are many banks and insurance companies with large capital, and most the great industrial houses of American have offices in the city. The borough of Brooklyn developed as a large independent city across the river from New York City, but it has now become a part of the metropolis. It is an important center for the refining of sugar and the roasting and grinding of coffee and spices. Eastward from Brooklyn and northward along the banks of the Hudson River are chains of suburban towns where many of the people live who work each day in the metropolis. To the west, across the Hudson River, are Hoboken, Jersey City, and Newark. These three cities are in New Jersey, but they have many of the same geographic advantages that New York City has. In addition to the busy industrial and commercial life of the city, New York is one of the leading educational and musical centers of this country, and it is fortunate in having wonderful collections of natural history and art.
