In recent years, there has been an increased focus on identity and how it shapes visitor experience in free-choice learning (FCL) environments. Inquiry into how visitor's sex impacts identity and experience has yielded equivocal results. To date there has been no research into how the psychosocial construct of gender and gender identity influence visitor identity, experience, and science identity. This thesis set out to discover possible connections between and individual's visitor experience, visitor identity, free-time science activities, and science identity through the gender identity lens. The study took place at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon. The Personal Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ) was used to measure gender identity, and interviews were conducted to determine visitor experience, visitor identity, and science identity based on free-time science activities engaged in by the participants. Raw PAQ scores were statistically analyzed within the study population using standardized scores, which were then applied to the coded interview data. Links and "hints" were noted based on this analysis, and hypotheses for future research were formulated based on this data. Gender identity emerged as a useful construct that could broaden the FCL field's ability to understand the complexity of the visitor experience and explain some of the equivocal findings about traditional influences of sex in such settings. Although science identity did not emerge as an important variable, there are likely conceptual and measurement issues affecting these findings. The information gathered here and applied to research in the future, both in school and FCL settings, could lead to a deeper understanding of why there is still a gender gap in many science, mathematics, engineering, and technology fields. In her treatment of the femme fatale figure, Lee both reinforces and complicates the image of the sexualized, often bestialized woman as an object for the male gaze by blurring the boundaries of gender, sex roles, and forms of empowerment. In closely examining these figures in Lee's work, I clarify the complexity and dynamism of Lee’s project as a woman on the threshold of a new century. Through close reading and analysis of the primary texts, as well as incorporation of secondary critical work and literary theory, I explore issues of doubling, androgyny, religion, and decadence in three fin de siècle stories. This thesis challenges the notion of Decadents and New Women as discrete categorizations, as well as recent critical attempts to claim Lee as a contemporary feminist. Acknowledging the liminality and ambivalence of Lee's writing and life, my project complicates and expands on our understanding of gender politics and literature at the end of the nineteenth century. Alpha-Tocopherol (αT) supplementation decreases B[a]P-DNA adducts in smokers, particularly women; but the mechanism is unknown. To test the hypothesis that αT protection from B[a]P exposure is gender-dependent, male and female rats received 7 daily subcutaneous (SQ) injections of αT (100 mg αT/ kg body wt) or vehicle, followed by a single intraperitoneal injection of B[a]P (20 mg/kg, spiked with 3H-B[a]P) on day 9. Urine and bile were collected pre- and post-B[a]P; plasma and tissues were collected 5 or 24 h post-B[a]P. αT supplementation increased αT levels to a greater extent in females than in males. Compared to vehicle, αT supplementation increased total urinary and biliary excretion of B[a]P and/or B[a]P metabolites more than 2.5-fold in females, but decreased total excretion in males (p<0.05). αT prevented B[a]P-induced increases in urine 8-isoprostanes (males) and decreased tissue malondialdehyde levels in a tissue- and gender-dependent manner. Thus, αT protection from B[a]P exposure is gender-dependent and occurs by both antioxidant and non-antioxidant mechanisms. Further elucidation of the mechanism(s) of αT protection against environmental toxins may lead to the development of protective strategies for occupational PAH exposures. As autoethnographic writing insists that even the seemingly most personal aspects of a researcher's character are deeply embedded in larger political and sociocultural narratives, this thesis suggests that writers can productively use autoethnography to enrich their understanding of the matrices of self and other. The first chapter examines some of the uses and understandings of this method in rhetoric and writing studies as well as some of its intersections with other scholarly pursuits. The second chapter continues by offering the author's own autoethnography, centering on his literacy development as a performer and gender-marked person. The final chapter concludes by asserting that autoethnography, at its best, catches writers "in the act" in important ways, resisting universalizing and homogenizing claims and bringing to the fore previously marginalized stories about performance and gender. In Heart of Darkness and The Good Soldier, Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford employ the narrative subjectivity inherent in their Impressionist technique to provide insight into the often-irrational processes through which political and individual identities are constructed through narrative. Contrary to traditional readings of Impressionism as a strictly aesthetic and politically neutral technique, I contend that Ford and Conrad developed their artistic method for highly political purposes. Both Ford and Conrad criticized the colonial mission and recognized that Victorian imperial ideology is instilled in the public through language, not only in individual interactions but also in the widely-circulated propaganda of the press and popular literature of the time. The two novelists respond to this dogma with an artistic technique that resists such simplistic moralizing and instead aims to honestly depict the processes by which imperfect and subjective individuals negotiate identity in the context of culture. Of such processes, this paper focuses most specifically on the act of gendering, for the performance of gender is an aspect of selfhood in which the intersection of national and individual identity is especially visible. Indeed, the concept of gender in this age was highly political. The formation of a national imperial identity rested on a construct of masculinity in which male community develops through exploration and conquest, and the ideal man’s dominance manifests itself not only in his possession of women and territory, but also in the self-possession acquired through his control of language. This paper explores the means through which Ford and Conrad interrogate the construct of imperial masculinity in their portrayal of a subjective narrator’s appropriation of traditional Victorian narrative conventions and ideology as he negotiates his identity. Through the narrators’ flawed, illogical, yet often oddly persuasive assessments, Ford and Conrad not only provide insight into the processes of delusion, rationalization, and distortion through which all individuals make sense of their surroundings, they also criticize the seduction of language and the imperial ideology of which Marlow and Dowell are products. . Despite their apparent reflectiveness, the narrators’ loyalty to eloquent, masculine figures proves their conformity and thus their complicity in the cruelty and horror that their idols’ rhetoric masks. Using the Current Population Survey, Annual Social and Economic Supplement from March 2006 for Oregon and Washington combined with the Directory of Occupational Titles from the United States Department of Labor, I examine if individual earning power would be higher for workers in physically demanding occupations as compared to those in non-physically demanding occupations. Results show that women in the Pacific Northwest are economically disadvantaged, even after controlling for theoretically based wage determinants. In different ways, both colonialists and nationalists appropriated the female body and sexuality to convey ideologies concerning the conquest of distant lands or related to the dignity of the colonized people. This dissertation examines how African women writers' representation of female desire counternarrates colonialist and nationalist tales while disturbing gender conventions and defying social norms in African contexts. By using feminist theories, cultural studies, and postcolonial theory, I examine the ways that Ama Ata Aidoo's Changes: A Love Story, Paulina Chiziane's Niketche: Uma Historia de Poligamia, and Ken Bugul's Le Baobab Fou reveal female sexuality while simultaneously subverting discourses that often define female bodies as sexual objects or as spiritual entities-- as the Mother Africa, a trope widespread in the speeches of the Negritude movement. Through the analysis of these literary works, I present how these African women writers have used discursive strategies about female desire to demonstrate the consequences of the colonial encounter and post-independence policies on neo-colonial women's bodies and minds as well as to reveal the exclusion of women's voices from national affairs. These works not only confront history but also interrogate the role of literature and the work of art. Through their literary works, Bugul, Chiziane, and Aidoo bring to literature characteristics of African arts, reinventing the literary in order to forge a medium that is able to give sense to African women's experience. Tarzan celebrates the human connection with wild nature on a personal level and the freedom associated with a forest wilderness preserved in its natural state. While the topic of women is largely absent from climate discourse overall, the representations of women that occur reveal underlying structures of power rooted in imperialism and colonial dominance. This thesis presents an analysis of the ways in which the category "woman" is constructed in climate change discourse by utilizing data from the micro-blogging site Twitter.com in the 60 days surrounding the 17th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP17) in 2011. The findings of this research are that women are represented through imageries of violence and victimization, while simultaneously constructed as mythical heroines/warriors who will defend and save humanity from this global threat. Using transnational and postcolonial feminist theory, I critique these representations and examine the function and consequences of the narrow representations of women in climate change discourse. Based on the findings, this thesis suggests that a shift towards the discursive feminization of climate change could occur in the future, wherein the ways in which climate change is viewed and responded to may move from the current frame of governability, commodification, and securitization, to a frame that sees climate change as a "women's issue." Using transnational and postcolonial feminist theory, I critique these representations and examine the function and consequences of the narrow representations of women in climate change discourse. Based on the findings, this thesis suggests that a shift towards the discursive feminization of climate change could occur in the future, wherein the ways in which climate change is viewed and responded to may move from the current frame of governability, commodification, and securitization, to a frame that sees climate change as a "women's issue." Feminist intervention into climate change discourse is greatly lacking, and this thesis argues that feminist engagement with the problem of climate change is necessary for gender justice in our climate-altered world. The integrity and depth of deposition have made the Newell site a unique opportunity to look at activity areas and domestic life of early Euro-American settlers in the early Oregon Country before statehood. Large block excavations have revealed a domestic structure with unique architectural features and one of the largest domestic assemblages of this era in Oregon. By using large block style excavations, exposing the interior and exterior of the household living surface, the author hopes to be able to show how the occupants of this household, the majority of whom were women and children, lived their day-to-day lives as active members of their household, in charge of domestic tasks, including childcare, farming, animal raising and indigenous traditional skills. Due to the patriarchal societies that most historical archaeologists research, many of the historical documents are written for, by or about men. Historical archaeologists often interpret archaeological sites as if these male head households were the only ones in the household contributing to the archaeological record or making any meaningful decisions in the past. However, the majority of historic domestic households were composed of women and children. I propose that in historical archaeology, we should look at the historical demography of the communities we study before we interpret who is present at the archaeological site, which can lead us to more of a holistic interpretation of these past populations. These trends are China’s growing influence in Africa, large–scale land grabbing and climate change politics. Based on eighteen months of mixed–methods research between 2009 and 2011, this dissertation examines the interactions of these global trends with day–to–day social, political and ecological processes in two rural communities in Zambézia Province (central Mozambique)—one in the miombo woodlands of Maganja da Costa district and the other near expanding timber plantations in Gurué district. The community in Maganja da Costa is at the center of clashes between conservation groups and illegal loggers selling precious hardwoods to China. The community in Gurué is responding to a Presidential mandate for every local leader to establish ‘forests’ (predominantly exotic monocultures) that represent a dispersed form of land grabbing. Drawing on recent agendas within the field of feminist political ecology, the author highlights key encounters or ‘place–events’ (following Doreen Massey) that explain the complex historical, political and ecological dynamics shaping contemporary forest transformation in Zambézia. These place–events can only be understood through attention to bodies and identity performance, key sites where assemblages of power and meaning are enacted and negotiated. This approach provides insight into less visible dimensions of landscape change by moving beyond commodity chain analysis and local/national/global hierarchies of causality. Examples of place–events examined include: girls becoming women through scarification with battery acid in a forest grove; men singing about their boss’ wife as they haul timber; NGO staff distributing pesticide spray information pamphlets in an anti–malaria campaign and elite women beating their husbands for planting ‘government’ trees. Attention to bodily performances that fundamentally constitute these place–events demonstrates how interventions in the name of sustainable development play out and often fail. It also elucidates how some loggers are able to extract valuable timber more than others. In fact, local community members see all of these outsiders—despite their distinct ideologies—as equally foreign based on similar ‘outsider’ bodily comportment. Such embodied dynamics are political and cultural, and they should be a key concern for anyone involved in shaping the future of Mozambique’s forests.
