In Heart of Darkness and The Good Soldier, Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford employ the narrative subjectivity inherent in their Impressionist technique to provide insight into the often-irrational processes through which political and individual identities are constructed through narrative. Contrary to traditional readings of Impressionism as a strictly aesthetic and politically neutral technique, I contend that Ford and Conrad developed their artistic method for highly political purposes. Both Ford and Conrad criticized the colonial mission and recognized that Victorian imperial ideology is instilled in the public through language, not only in individual interactions but also in the widely-circulated propaganda of the press and popular literature of the time. The two novelists respond to this dogma with an artistic technique that resists such simplistic moralizing and instead aims to honestly depict the processes by which imperfect and subjective individuals negotiate identity in the context of culture. Of such processes, this paper focuses most specifically on the act of gendering, for the performance of gender is an aspect of selfhood in which the intersection of national and individual identity is especially visible. Indeed, the concept of gender in this age was highly political. The formation of a national imperial identity rested on a construct of masculinity in which male community develops through exploration and conquest, and the ideal man’s dominance manifests itself not only in his possession of women and territory, but also in the self-possession acquired through his control of language. This paper explores the means through which Ford and Conrad interrogate the construct of imperial masculinity in their portrayal of a subjective narrator’s appropriation of traditional Victorian narrative conventions and ideology as he negotiates his identity. Through the narrators’ flawed, illogical, yet often oddly persuasive assessments, Ford and Conrad not only provide insight into the processes of delusion, rationalization, and distortion through which all individuals make sense of their surroundings, they also criticize the seduction of language and the imperial ideology of which Marlow and Dowell are products. . Despite their apparent reflectiveness, the narrators’ loyalty to eloquent, masculine figures proves their conformity and thus their complicity in the cruelty and horror that their idols’ rhetoric masks. Synthesizing case studies, scientific research and policies papers, this theoretical work adopts the term “agrofuels” coined by the peasant organization La Vía Campesina to reflect the true nature of these commodities – one of dispossession and ecological destruction. This paper documents the falsity of the claim that the fuels are “sustainable” by presenting facts linking them to deforestation, loss and pollution of water sources, destruction of important biodiversity and the knowledge that maintains this diversity, as well as economic exploitation. Most importantly, I verify that the adoption of agrofuel expansion exacerbates gendered patterns of exclusion and, in most cases, worsens women’s positions within the communities targeted for feedstock production with regard to land tenure, household energy maintenance, independent income and physical integrity. Women are economically disadvantaged in most U.S. labor markets, demonstrated by a persistent gender wage gap. The relative wage discrepancy can be understood as a result of labor market conditions, human capital investments, and gender discrimination. To determine if the wage gap could be decreased, I use classical regression modeling to examine how physically demanding occupations affect women’s and men’s earnings. I control for a range of variables indicating employee investments in human capital, demand-side characteristics including occupational physical demands, and factors representing cultural constraints and institutional bias. Using the Current Population Survey, Annual Social and Economic Supplement from March 2006 for Oregon and Washington combined with the Directory of Occupational Titles from the United States Department of Labor, I examine if individual earning power would be higher for workers in physically demanding occupations as compared to those in non-physically demanding occupations. Results show that women in the Pacific Northwest are economically disadvantaged, even after controlling for theoretically based wage determinants. Some occupational physical demands do increase wage, such as climbing and strength within a goods-based occupation, however most of these demands are only relevant for male-dominated occupations. Women may earn more money if they infiltrate male-dominated occupations requiring physical demands. Effective local and state level government policies may be fostered to recruit and retain non-college educated women into physically demanding jobs. However, these solutions are temporary because once an occupation has more women employed, the wages are likely to decrease for all workers. While no easy solution exists, it is my hope that lessening the societal constructions which limit women’s occupational opportunities will not only lessen the gender wage gap, but work to address a systemic bias against women. It repeats and expands upon a study conducted by Mary Barbercheck (2001) that analyzed advertisements in Science between 1995 and 1997. In this study, advertisements larger than one third of a page that contained a human figure (N=1809) were analyzed in terms of perceived race, gender, occupation, and social characteristics of the individuals shown in all 154 issues of Science published from 2004 through 2006. Relevant occupation and social characteristics of the individuals were identified; specifically it was noted if the individuals appeared to be a scientist, a scientific hero or expert, an athlete, a "nerd" or nonconformist, or a caregiver of a child. Additionally, the use of the words simple/easy and efficient/fast/reliable/accurate in these advertisements was tracked. Every appropriate advertisement was included in the analysis each time it appeared, which allowed a complete and thorough examination of the trends reveled in the advertisements. These data were contrasted with Barbercheck's 1995 through 1997 data in order to reveal how the use of stereotypes in advertisements in Science has changed since the late 1990s. Analyses indicate that scientific advertisements increasingly portray a diverse population. However, social stereotypes and historical dominance of the sciences by certain social groups within the United States continue to be represented in these advertisements, emphasizing how social and cultural norms significantly inform and reflect the manner in which scientific advertisements are composed.
