As digital media become more commonplace, social networks are becoming sites where women create and manage relationships and identities. This thesis is a study of how women ages 18-22 are constructing their gender and sexuality on the social network site MySpace. By using a rhetorical analysis of 58 MySpace profiles, this study identifies several themes, including the strong presence of horizontal hostility. Rather than functioning as a forum for women to challenge conventional gender roles, MySpace gives women an opportunity to perform femininity. These women are reinforcing the values associated with traditional femininity by competing for both social and romantic attentions in their autobiographical writings and profile photographs. Synthesizing case studies, scientific research and policies papers, this theoretical work adopts the term “agrofuels” coined by the peasant organization La Vía Campesina to reflect the true nature of these commodities – one of dispossession and ecological destruction. This paper documents the falsity of the claim that the fuels are “sustainable” by presenting facts linking them to deforestation, loss and pollution of water sources, destruction of important biodiversity and the knowledge that maintains this diversity, as well as economic exploitation. Most importantly, I verify that the adoption of agrofuel expansion exacerbates gendered patterns of exclusion and, in most cases, worsens women’s positions within the communities targeted for feedstock production with regard to land tenure, household energy maintenance, independent income and physical integrity. Research shows that women's lives are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change. While the topic of women is largely absent from climate discourse overall, the representations of women that occur reveal underlying structures of power rooted in imperialism and colonial dominance. This thesis presents an analysis of the ways in which the category "woman" is constructed in climate change discourse by utilizing data from the micro-blogging site Twitter.com in the 60 days surrounding the 17th UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP17) in 2011. The findings of this research are that women are represented through imageries of violence and victimization, while simultaneously constructed as mythical heroines/warriors who will defend and save humanity from this global threat. Using transnational and postcolonial feminist theory, I critique these representations and examine the function and consequences of the narrow representations of women in climate change discourse. Based on the findings, this thesis suggests that a shift towards the discursive feminization of climate change could occur in the future, wherein the ways in which climate change is viewed and responded to may move from the current frame of governability, commodification, and securitization, to a frame that sees climate change as a "women's issue." Feminist intervention into climate change discourse is greatly lacking, and this thesis argues that feminist engagement with the problem of climate change is necessary for gender justice in our climate-altered world. To that end this study examines the construction of the Heian concept of femininity with regard to both women of the lady-waiting and elite classes, as illustrated in diaries and court records. The findings indicate that the aesthetic of womanhood oftentimes related to an ideal of female passivity in romantic relations with men and of selflessness in involvement in major court decisions. This aesthetic was physically manifested in the attention given to the sequestration of women of high rank. However, evidence suggests that this aesthetic did not mean that women were not influential, in part because this aesthetic was an ideal that did not necessarily reflect reality. An examination of domestic life at the Newell Farmstead (35MA41) in the early Oregon country Author: Manion, Mollie Jo The Newell Farmstead (35MA41) archaeological site lies in the heart of the French Prairie in the Willamette Valley in the Champoeg State Heritage Area, Oregon. The integrity and depth of deposition have made the Newell site a unique opportunity to look at activity areas and domestic life of early Euro-American settlers in the early Oregon Country before statehood. Large block excavations have revealed a domestic structure with unique architectural features and one of the largest domestic assemblages of this era in Oregon. By using large block style excavations, exposing the interior and exterior of the household living surface, the author hopes to be able to show how the occupants of this household, the majority of whom were women and children, lived their day-to-day lives as active members of their household, in charge of domestic tasks, including childcare, farming, animal raising and indigenous traditional skills. Due to the patriarchal societies that most historical archaeologists research, many of the historical documents are written for, by or about men. Historical archaeologists often interpret archaeological sites as if these male head households were the only ones in the household contributing to the archaeological record or making any meaningful decisions in the past. However, the majority of historic domestic households were composed of women and children. I propose that in historical archaeology, we should look at the historical demography of the communities we study before we interpret who is present at the archaeological site, which can lead us to more of a holistic interpretation of these past populations.
