This was the first year that extensive monitoring of forest vegetation for ozone injury was carried out in Oregon, and Washington. Injury was detected on ponderosa and Jeffrey pine in the Sierra Nevada permanent plots and on red elderberry at one FHM location in southwest Washington. No injury was detected at the Mount Rainier sites. The authors also report on results of a trial where red alder, huckleberry, blue elderberry, and chokecherry were exposed to ozone under controlled conditions. This paper describes the application of aerial photography and GIS technology to develop flexible and transferable methods for multi-spatial scale characterization and analysis of riparian corridors. Relationships between structural attributes of riparian corridors and indicators of stream ecological conditions are not well established. As part of a research project focused on assessing riparian-stream systems in agricultural landscapes of Oregon's Willamette Valley, GIS land cover/land use databases were created from 1997 aerial photography and digital orthophotography for 23 predominantly agricultural watersheds, including detailed land cover-land use coverages within 150 m of perennial and intermittent streams. GIS functions were used to partition the stream networks at various lateral-longitudinal scales to quantify land cover/land use and to generate functionally relevant metrics of riparian vegetation, such as its composition, width, and continuity. The methods developed provide considerable flexibility for generating metrics characterizing attributes of riparian corridors and for exploring relationships among these metrics and indicators of stream ecological condition. Curvilinear increases in periodic annual increments of both basal area and cubic volume generally occurred with increasing stand density, but increments dropped off at the highest stand densities for some periods. Objectives of the global network are: to establish reference levels for pollutants that already exhibit global contamination; establish baseline measurements of ecosystem parameters that permit comparison of more impacted areas; and serve as an early warning system for detecting increases in hazardous pollutants and changes in ecosystem processes. Because of its remote and pristine nature, Noatak National Preserve appeared to be an excellent candidate for inclusion in such a baseline network.
