Author: Alizadeh, Yasser, Lingga, Marwan Mossa Year: 2010 Google Trends is a powerful tool in extracting and comparing searched terms through the time. It simply shows the increasing or decreasing of searching times for any term on the biggest search engine on the web. The goal of this paper is to find out whether Google Trends data has a significant correlation with the characteristics of the subject in the real world or not? For instance, is there any meaningful correlation between “volume search index” in Google Trends for a term like “Oil Price” and actual worldwide Oil price? This paper tests the hypothesis on two similar cases; “Oil Price” and “Gold Price” to answer the above question. Research findings have shown a strong correlation between Google Trends volume search index and actual real world data for both terms. We have concluded that Google Trends could be a valuable, fast and free tool to predict the trends of such a trends, although it definitely needs more studies for verification or generalize the method. Despite the intense advertisements, the responses from customers didn’t appear as expected. Less than 1 percent of US households have a 3DTV set and just only 8% are interested in the 3D technology according from Leichtman Research.[1] Some reasons for 3D TV failure are too pricey ($600 - $1,000 more than their HDTV counterparts), few contents available, and hassle from 3D glasses.[2] The industry has come up with the new hype for TV set in 2011. In 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the new trend is Internet-enabled everything. The spearhead of this trend is inevitably TV set market. Integrating internet with TV has been discusses and debated for decade. WebTV from Microsoft is a good example of the effort to combining internet with TV. WebTV was launched in 1996 with the set-top box and wireless keyboard. The primary purpose was for web browsing and email. However, WebTV wasn’t successful back at that time. Several different methodologies are being developed in the Technology Watch area of research including the Patent Alert System (PAS) by Dereli and Durmusoglu. By using two different variations of the Patent Alert System, this paper will analyze two different technologies based on wind energy. In this research, a technology policy choice framework is developed to link prospective high-tech areas, technology development strategies, and various innovative resources. The research approach is to develop a hierarchical decision model (HDM) and apply the analytic hierarchical process (AHP). Experts are invited from diverse sources to provide a balanced perspective representing different stakeholders. This research focuses on the fast developing Chinese biopharmaceutical industry as a case study. The results of this research have identified thirteen prospective biotech areas that China should invest more resources for development. These technology areas include: recombinant therapeutic proteins, recombinant vaccines, monoclonal antibody technology, cell and tissue engineering, gene therapy, antisense therapy, RNAi, nanobiotechnology, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, pharmacogenetics, gene sequencing, and biotechnology diagnostics. For most of these technology areas, the results have indicated an imitative innovation strategy should be taken as a better strategy under current technological conditions in China. The research has further found that high-tech small-to-medium companies and multinational corporations are major innovation contributors in the Chinese biopharmaceutical sector. The research outcomes can serve as guidelines in resource allocation and policy making for technology development. Based on the overall research findings, policy-makers can apply more specific policy instruments to support innovation activities. Appropriate policy measures may help the country to construct an innovative ecosystem that can serve as the driving force for future technology development. The US Department of Energy released a report in 2008 titled, “20% Wind Energy by 2030” in which it concludes that it is possible for wind energy to account for 20% of the US electricity supply by the year 2030. Acknowledging the real possibility of this scenario, the research and analysis of “Wind Energy: How Much US Electricity will be Supplied by Wind?” seeks to determine the likelihood of this scenario. However, given the super-hypothetical nature of the DOE report and the inherent uncertainty of a 20 year forecast, this project also seeks to determine the likelihood of wind energy accounting for 5% of US electricity needs by the year 2020. Given wind energy’s 2009 contribution of 1.8% to US electricity needs, the 5% contribution by 2020 was determined as a necessary benchmark to further extrapolate the likelihood of reaching the 20% goal by 2030. The research methodology for this project implemented the STEEP framework in which the Social, Technical, Environmental, Economic, and Political components of wind energy production are each independently studied. The research relied heavily on publications from the US Department of Energy and the US Energy Information Administration as well as several other government agencies and research establishments. Current trends coupled with anticipated advancements were used to determine of wind energy would likely reach either the 2020/5% or 2030/20% goals. Although each component of the STEEP framework was studied independently, it was determined that each of the components is substantially interdependent on one another. Therefore, the future of the US wind energy industry is highly dependent on the continuing progress in each of the fields of study. Additionally, we will discuss what actions may be taken by the organizations and social groups to combat cyberbullying. Our methodology is based on the usage of literature review and survey data, which was collected from the local community, to investigate critical factors that enable cyberbullying due to Social Networking technology. By using P.E.S.T. analysis to evaluate cyberbullying due to Social Networking trends, the following results are established. From the political perspective, public awareness of hazards due to cyberbullying has increased and as a result, lawmakers responded to the unrest of the public opinion by enacting what they thought were appropriate laws against cyberbullying. Our findings show that although the actions by the lawmakers are well-intended they are still not sufficient, especially when the cyberbullying offences take place anonymously online. From the economic perspective, schools where bullying and cyberbullying activity take place are struggling with economic aspects of financing appropriate prevention programs. Furthermore, the financial impact on the society is said to be significant due to the cost of medical treatment for victims of cyberbullying attacks. From the social perspective, the more time people spend online outside traditional face-to-face social interactions, the more evidence of anti-social behavior is evident. Moreover, certain health risks are prone to exist because people spend more time on their computers and less time doing physical activities. Victims of cyberbullying are also known to suffer from anti-social and psychological side effects that may lead to self-harm or in the extreme cases, suicide. From the technical perspective, traditional bullies use Social Networking technology to carry out their malicious attacks anonymously and on a global scale. They tend to rate themselves as Internet experts thus shifting the imbalance of power over their victims. In conclusion, our solutions to cyberbullying attacks deal with issues revealed by performing thorough P.E.S.T analysis. From the political perspective, the need to have stricter laws may be obvious but these laws must have appropriate provisions to deal with technical challenges of the perpetrators’ online anonymity. Using multi-criteria decision analysis and judgment data from panels of experts, a robust model is developed that comprehends the essential criteria and outcomes within the context of computer interconnect technologies. The resultant, generalizable model is validated against the case of the extant Universal Serial Bus (USB) interconnect standard and found to be congruent with the assessment of the experts. Scholarship on technology standards development is rich and multifaceted--spanning numerous streams of inquiry. This research contextualizes technology standardization within the economic, strategic, organizational, and legal perspectives. The resultant model demonstrates that strategic planning is regarded by the experts as the principal driver in the decision to participate in a technology standardization effort. Furthermore, the primacy of commitment and leadership within the standards-setting organization is unambiguously established through rigorous quantitative analysis. The proposed model verifies that the firm's desire to align its product roadmap to the emerging standard is the chief criterion in the decision to contribute to the standards development effort. Using IBM as the base model, we will describe the process that drove an inno-vative technology product company to a turnaround that resulted in their becoming a primari-ly a provider of technology services. We will apply this model to other companies (Xerox, Rolls Royce, Siebel and Oracle) which have been in similar situations and identify character-istics that drove the decision to follow or eschew IBM’s model. Using documented successes of these companies’ strategies as a guide we will try to identify characteristics and factors that can help technology managers faced with this decision. In addition, we will analyze the ser-vitization of the technology industry sector and document future trends. The team will start with a detailed literature review. We will study IBM specifically, because we will use this company as our baseline starting point. In addition, we will include past mar-ket research studies and identify 5-6 other companies that have followed a similar transfor-mation pattern. Finally, we expect to identify market conditions that indicate (a) when to shift to a technology service company or (b) focus on technology product improvements. On the other hand, it is better to buy the vehicle at a higher APR than to lease it, since leasing will make one pay almost as high in interest as the one buying the vehicle. It was also shown that since the market fluctuation for used vehicles is uncertain, it is more risky to buy the vehicle if one intends to use it for a shorter period, since vehicles generally depreciate quicker in the first few years -­‐ being able to sell it for an anticipated market value might be difficult. However, bringing a device to the medical market is a long and very expensive process due to regulatory and reimbursement requirements. If a company can also consider initial target niche markets for a subset of this product then this may be a better approach than bearing the high expense for the one time effort of only entering the medical market. Several initial niche markets appear attractive. These include: home care, asthma management, fitness/lifestyle, wellness, and hospital care. The question is ―Which one is more attractive?‖. By formulating this decision problem as a hierarchical decision model with the different niche markets as the alternatives and selecting various levels of criteria we were able to address this question. An expert panel consisting of the company’s strategic/executive management, company’s operational and subject matter experts, and external industry analysts was selected and a survey of their judgments taken. The results representing the expert panel’s judgment indicated that asthma management and home care markets were most attractive and the other three were given less relative importance. Intermediate results were also of interest such as the relative importance of: market, financial, product, and corporate alignment objectives; regions within the market objectives; solution components which contributed to both financial and product objectives. The panel’s judgment was also compared against a reference of the industry/market analyst’s position. These comparative judgments and results may be revised on an annual basis to mark maturity trends.
