To speed up this development process, we optimized the information flow and redesigned the development organization into chunks. First, we investigated the information flow between tasks and coupled tasks into phases utilizing the Design Structure Matrix (DSM) so that the information exchange among chunks of tasks is as few as possible. In this way, the redundant iterations of tasks are eliminated. Meanwhile, we also grouped the engineers into groups according to the tasks, in this; we eliminated wasteful communications between the groups of engineers. We depict the social network defined by the information flow within the software development sector and compared the new arrangement to the old arrangement in a visible way. This new arrangement will facilitate the communications between engineers and speed up the process of software development. They need to identify global technology trends and adapt to local needs and capabilities. Strategies for technology development differ among countries at different developmental stages. In this research, a technology policy choice framework is developed to link prospective high-tech areas, technology development strategies, and various innovative resources. The research approach is to develop a hierarchical decision model (HDM) and apply the analytic hierarchical process (AHP). Experts are invited from diverse sources to provide a balanced perspective representing different stakeholders. This research focuses on the fast developing Chinese biopharmaceutical industry as a case study. The results of this research have identified thirteen prospective biotech areas that China should invest more resources for development. These technology areas include: recombinant therapeutic proteins, recombinant vaccines, monoclonal antibody technology, cell and tissue engineering, gene therapy, antisense therapy, RNAi, nanobiotechnology, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, pharmacogenetics, gene sequencing, and biotechnology diagnostics. For most of these technology areas, the results have indicated an imitative innovation strategy should be taken as a better strategy under current technological conditions in China. The research has further found that high-tech small-to-medium companies and multinational corporations are major innovation contributors in the Chinese biopharmaceutical sector. The research outcomes can serve as guidelines in resource allocation and policy making for technology development. Based on the overall research findings, policy-makers can apply more specific policy instruments to support innovation activities. Appropriate policy measures may help the country to construct an innovative ecosystem that can serve as the driving force for future technology development. The readers and the intended audience of the development log can be anybody who is willing to know about choosing a technology in developing a Travel Beverage Heater. The problem that was not currently addressed by various other technologies and products was to heat the drink anywhere and at anytime. The current technologies that are used to heat the drink are not safer which could cause burns and hurt the customers, not easy to carry, not compact, some chemical based products have also caused injuries to the customers and were not eco friendly. Hence, to address these needs we have developed a product through our thorough research and analysis. The scope of the development log report doesn’t cover much in depth about the circuit design or in depth product specifications. It discusses about various possible technologies in high level that can be used such as chemical based, Butane fuel based and finally battery power based technology which could heat the drink. Hence, having a some prior knowledge about these chemicals and technologies would help to better understand the product but it is not mandatory. The methodology adopted was finding market opportunity through gap analysis of the competitors’ products which were customer complaints unaddressed by the other products which lead to the initiation of idea of developing a product which could heat the drink that is light, easy to use and safe to carry. Further we considered various potential customer segments that may be willing to buy this product, followed by selecting a potential target segment who were parents having babies and on further interviewing we found the customer needs and then interpreted the needs. The technology was selected based on interviewing the Mothers who have babies which was finally found to be battery based and later we used needs-metrics matrix to come up with product specifications. Final stage of developing the product was product design which was found to be spiral type design after evaluating various other designs. Finally, we calculated product development economics which includes unit production cost, net present value and break even analysis. The development log report starts with product development process which includes product planning and concept development, followed by design phase, product development economics, lessons learned and follow on research. There has been an increasing demand for iterative development process for products. Agile development process has been successfully used application software development projects to respond to rapid customer requests. This paper explores the applicability of Agile Project Management approaches to the Hardware Design and Verification (DV) process. Pre-silicon hardware design and verification process has its deep roots in manufacturing. The process and culture for project management present in hardware design groups are closer to manufacturing than software development process. The common characteristics of absolute adherence to planning coming from manufacturing can clearly be seen in hardware design groups. A company’s corporate culture emanating from manufacturing background can be a barrier to adoption of any kind of software development process. For the purpose of our study, the authors conducted interviews with six different design groups at Intel ® Corporation. The interviewers explored the management aspects of the project, discussed the challenges and issues encountered with the longer development cycles in hardware design process. The paper analyzes the data gathered and discusses the patterns observed across the groups. Agile Project Management expects a shift in the “attitude” of the Program or Project Managers and requires organizational buy-in for adopting and successfully practicing it. The paper goes into recommendations to mitigate the existing issues by using Agile management principles and suggests behaviorial changes if project groups do move to an Agile development process at Intel, where majority of the groups follow traditional management principles. Sustainable design is a design philosophy that seeks to minimize or eliminate negative impact to the natural environment through skillful and sensitive design. The importance of including sustainability at the fuzzy front end includes but is not limited to early tackling of barriers, enabling doing the right things versus doing things right and providing a platform to tackle sustainability problems at a higher system level. This study also analyzed tools for implementing sustainability at the fuzzy front end. They include, decision matrix, Eco compass, strategy list, cost analysis, creativity techniques, rules of thumb, expert rules etc. A survey was carried out to understand how organizations’ perceive sustainability; if these organizations include sustainability in their new product development process and most importantly if this implementation is done at the fuzzy front end. The survey results suggests that organizations are aware of the importance of including sustainability in the new product development process; however, implementing sustainability at the fuzzy front end is moderate. A framework was developed based on the literature review and survey to implement sustainability at the fuzzy front end. Title: Analyzing Sustainable Product Development processes in Fuzzy Front End Stage Author: Matthew, Anna Mary, Patil, Prajakta, Joy, Chinu, Owojori, Oyin Year: 2015 This is a study on the importance of including sustainability at the fuzzy front end (FFE) stage in new product development process. Sustainable design is a design philosophy that seeks to minimize or eliminate negative impact to the natural environment through skillful and sensitive design. The importance of including sustainability at the fuzzy front end includes but is not limited to early tackling of barriers, enabling doing the right things versus doing things right and providing a platform to tackle sustainability problems at a higher system level. This study also analyzed tools for implementing sustainability at the fuzzy front end. They include, decision matrix, Eco compass, strategy list, cost analysis, creativity techniques, rules of thumb, expert rules etc. A survey was carried out to understand how organizations’ perceive sustainability; if these organizations include sustainability in their new product development process and most importantly if this implementation is done at the fuzzy front end. The survey results suggests that organizations are aware of the importance of including sustainability in the new product development process; however, implementing sustainability at the fuzzy front end is moderate. For our research, we started with an analysis of the different areas which Brazil has a global impact on technology. We started with a top level review of all of Brazils technology efforts and impacts in different areas of concern. During this review, we found Brazil has research and development efforts in a number of areas, such as aerospace, pharmaceutical research, and agriculture, but there was a more significant theme that we found. A significant portion of Brazil’s technology development had an environmental theme to it. Due to Brazil’s geography with vast rainforests, status as a developing nation, and development of technologies meant to help it compete in the global marketplace, a significant portion of Brazil’s technological development had a global environmental theme. Upon finding this, we set out to create a critical report of Brazil’s technologies which have a global environmental impact. Making the proper decision is consequential and potentially fraught with risks for the firm such as competitive exposure, high expenditures with inadequate returns, restrictive inbound or outbound patent licensing obligations, and related complications. This study presents a framework to guide managers in the ICT industry in assessing the factors that inform the decision to participate in the development of technology standards. Using multi-criteria decision analysis and judgment data from panels of experts, a robust model is developed that comprehends the essential criteria and outcomes within the context of computer interconnect technologies. The resultant, generalizable model is validated against the case of the extant Universal Serial Bus (USB) interconnect standard and found to be congruent with the assessment of the experts. Scholarship on technology standards development is rich and multifaceted--spanning numerous streams of inquiry. This research contextualizes technology standardization within the economic, strategic, organizational, and legal perspectives. The resultant model demonstrates that strategic planning is regarded by the experts as the principal driver in the decision to participate in a technology standardization effort. Furthermore, the primacy of commitment and leadership within the standards-setting organization is unambiguously established through rigorous quantitative analysis. The proposed model verifies that the firm's desire to align its product roadmap to the emerging standard is the chief criterion in the decision to contribute to the standards development effort. Other criteria of high interest include the leveraging of network externalities to glean disruptive trends within the ecosystem, the exploration of opportunities to expand the total available market for the firm, and the availability and terms of IP licenses. In most of the publications, much of the assessment of the drivers of growth and factors which hinder the development of OSS has been done form the technical perspective .Managerial perceptions of benefits and drawbacks that impact the organizational adoption of OSS has been neglected due to its focus on software development. In this paper we have tried to analyze the benefits and drawbacks mainly from the perspective of the IS/IT managers by analyzing various case studies of the leading companies that adopted OSS in their software portfolios. We also conducted surveys with two leading corporations like Nike and Intel in the city of Portland in Orgeon and also tried to contact the people from few global companies. After analyzing surveys and case studies we found out that benefits outweigh drawbacks in adoption of OSS. Companies are strategically adopting OSS as they have incorporated OSS in their IT strategies. The issues which were thought to be hindering the growth of OSS were found to be insignificant in front of the large amount of savings, escape from vendor-lock-in and customization of processes which companies are able to achieve after switching to OSS. Despite of many benefits some concerns surfaced up like lack of formal guidelines for the adoption of OSS in an organization. Lack of management support also hinders the adoption of OSS. OSS can be the best choice for the company if it aligns its business objectives with particular OSS before switching to it. In this paper we have tried to analyze the benefits and drawbacks mainly from the perspective of the IS/IT managers by analyzing various case studies of the leading companies that adopted OSS in their software portfolios. We also conducted surveys with two leading corporations like Nike and Intel in the city of Portland in Orgeon and also tried to contact the people from few global companies. After analyzing surveys and case studies we found out that benefits outweigh drawbacks in adoption of OSS. Companies are strategically adopting OSS as they have incorporated OSS in their IT strategies. The issues which were thought to be hindering the growth of OSS were found to be insignificant in front of the large amount of savings, escape from vendor-lock-in and customization of processes which companies are able to achieve after switching to OSS. Despite of many benefits some concerns surfaced up like lack of formal guidelines for the adoption of OSS in an organization. Lack of management support also hinders the adoption of OSS. OSS can be the best choice for the company if it aligns its business objectives with particular OSS before switching to it. Today,OSS is in the software portfolio of more than seventy five percent of the major companies and is expected that by 2016 OSS will be in mission critical software portfolios of more than ninety nine percent of global companies. OS Medical is dedicated to developing low-cost medical devices. The first device, currently in development, is the Blind Vision Project. Worn as a conventional pair of glasses, the BVP utilizes ultrasonic sensors to perceive physical objects, transmitting their proximity with massaging motors connected to the earpieces of the glasses. The device’s range can be easily adjusted to facilitate indoor or outdoor use. The device is powered by a lithium-ion battery, which is recharged with a standard USB cable. 3 million Americans are currently blind and 25 million suffer from impaired vision. Blindness can lead to a variety of other health conditions such as depression, diabetes and high cholesterol. Globally, 40 million are blind and 285 million visually impaired. In developing, lack of mobility can dramatically shorten life expectancy. The BVP will strive to increase the mobility and improve the life of blind people around the world. Both blind people and advocacy groups have expressed interest in the BVP, though similar devices have failed to catch on in the past. The failure of similar devices is generally attributed to a lack of functionality or unwieldy appearance. Competing devices are currently in development by Oxford University, Brainport Technology and potentially Apple Computers. By harnessing the power of open source development, OS Medical will strive to become the preeminent assistive device design community. OS Medical is committed to adhering to open source principles. All design specifications and IP will be published freely. Thriving open source communities exist to support software applications such as Linux, Mozilla and Drupal. Open source hardware communities are growing quickly. OS Medical will be the first open source community dedicated specifically to medical devices. Production of devices will be performed in partnership with electrical engineering classes at universities. The BVP will be delivered as a kit, which will be assembled by students as they learn basic engineering skills. Completed kits will be donated to blindness advocacy organizations for distribution to users. The BVP would replace the kits currently used, which have minimal social value and are generally thrown away or salvaged for parts at the conclusion of the class. OS Medical is currently in discussions with Prof Phillip Wong to develop a pilot program in conjunction with his Electrical Programming class. In 2013, OS Medical would like to provide the BVP to users free of cost. With an initial goal of 200 devices, OS Medical will require $30,000 in start-up funding. This will provide for the components of the device and administrative costs for the website which would support the OS Medical community. OS Medical is dedicated to developing low-cost medical devices. The first device, currently in development, is the Blind Vision Project. Worn as a conventional pair of glasses, the BVP utilizes ultrasonic sensors to perceive physical objects, transmitting their proximity with massaging motors connected to the earpieces of the glasses. The device’s range can be easily adjusted to facilitate indoor or outdoor use. The device is powered by a lithium-ion battery, which is recharged with a standard USB cable. 3 million Americans are currently blind and 25 million suffer from impaired vision. Blindness can lead to a variety of other health conditions such as depression, diabetes and high cholesterol. Globally, 40 million are blind and 285 million visually impaired. In developing, lack of mobility can dramatically shorten life expectancy. The BVP will strive to increase the mobility and improve the life of blind people around the world. Both blind people and advocacy groups have expressed interest in the BVP, though similar devices have failed to catch on in the past. The failure of similar devices is generally attributed to a lack of functionality or unwieldy appearance. Competing devices are currently in development by Oxford University, Brainport Technology and potentially Apple Computers. By harnessing the power of open source development, OS Medical will strive to become the preeminent assistive device design community. OS Medical is committed to adhering to open source principles. All design specifications and IP will be published freely. Thriving open source communities exist to support software applications such as Linux, Mozilla and Drupal. Open source hardware communities are growing quickly. OS Medical will be the first open source community dedicated specifically to medical devices. Production of devices will be performed in partnership with electrical engineering classes at universities. The BVP will be delivered as a kit, which will be assembled by students as they learn basic engineering skills. Completed kits will be donated to blindness advocacy organizations for distribution to users. The BVP would replace the kits currently used, which have minimal social value and are generally thrown away or salvaged for parts at the conclusion of the class. OS Medical is currently in discussions with Prof Phillip Wong to develop a pilot program in conjunction with his Electrical Programming class. In 2013, OS Medical would like to provide the BVP to users free of cost. With an initial goal of 200 devices, OS Medical will require $30,000 in start-up funding. Based on the literature review and the case study an interrelationship diagram (ID) is created by team brain storm. ID allowsteams to systematically identify, analyzes, and classify causes and effects existing among critical issues, so key drivers or outcomes can become an effective solution.An ID is used to identify the causes and outcomes of the NIH syndrome and hence provided the count measurements. The search for a technical assessment regarding these countries and their energy mix proved unsuccessful, but developing a Hierarchical Decision Model could prove to be beneficial for energy departments. It was thought a model could be built using the available information regarding the various energy mixes of the countries. Using the technologies as alternatives, and determining the criteria which each satisfied, a model was developed to show what each nation weighted as high importance. The study showed a couple results. First was that social/political factors were overwhelmingly low importance. It can help to achieve the cost and resource savings required to serve the massive numbers of people migrating to cities. This marketing plan is intended to explore the potential market for EcoDistricts Projects and form a strategy to capture that market. The report analyzes the target market – cities concentrating on existing neighborhoods with projects based on private funding, and provides customer and competition analyses. The plan concludes with a strategy constituting pricing and partnership plans as well as a communication plan to build brand awareness for EcoDistricts projects. Based on the scope statement combined with the team’s previous knowledge and experiences we began to brainstorm possible opportunities. The opportunities brainstormed ranged from automotive tool improvements, travel accessories to innovative home products. We found that some opportunities presented needed more detailed explanation than others due to the lack of familiarity and the diversity of the team. By the end of the process we had a pile of scribbled drawings and notes that represented a vast number of ideas. As a team we were able to agree upon six products which showed promise of future success that meet the limitations of our scope statement. These six products were then presented to our “board of directors” who then voted on each one to further create a quick tournament structure to identify the potentially exceptional opportunities. The opportunities identified as exceptional ones were the drink carbonation cap and the suitcase customization kit. Both these opportunities met potential customer needs that were represented in our team. As a team after mentally developing both of these opportunities through discussion and more sketches we agreed that the drink carbonation cap was the opportunity to proceed with. The significant aspects of the research are tied to its objectives which can be divided into academic and industrial classifications: Academic Objectives: 1. Use multiple perspectives in real-time (for input to decisions as events unfold) 2. Focus on a multiple perspectives view of technology integration into an organization Industrial Objectives: 1. Improve project effectiveness by increasing understanding of the technology integration process 2. Establish a model for the integration of a new technology into an organization The development of the case-based model was the primary objective, with the other objectives providing the methodology and subject-matter content to support model development. These four objectives are of interest to three parties: scholars who are interested in the theoretical and methodological aspects of technology integration and inquiring systems, technology developers in general who can benefit from improved means to integrate technology and analyze success/failure, and technology developers in information systems organizations who can obtain specific insight as well as utilize the general industrial results. From the multiple perspectives investigation, thirteen conclusions were reached about the process of integrating knowledge systems into an information systems organization. These conclusions are specific to the case study, but may have general applicability. The multiple perspectives methodology is then presented as the foundation for a technology integration model, on which the technology usage phases of awareness, motivation, and functioning capability can be completed. The model is described and then illustrated with two knowledge systems development project cases. With regards to the research objectives, it is concluded that: 1. The use of multiple perspectives in real-time are difficult and requires practice 2. Because technology integration is dependent upon technical, organization, and personal factors, the use of multiple perspectives are appropriate and useful. An eco-district is the next generation in green building design and expands the idea of a single building to an entire urban region. One of the key issues with eco-districts is the idea of net-zero energy, which is the requirement that the district must produce as much green energy as it uses. Since eco-districts encompass a larger geographic area, there are more options available in the design, location, sizing and financing for a green energy system. The question posed in this project is whether it is more cost effective to have multiple systems spread across multiple small sites (such as roof tops) or have a few large systems located on a single large open site. The LP model for this project looked at minimizing cost while still achieving the system size goals set by the demand load of the model. The district that was evaluated was a modified version of the PSU Eco District. The district area was modified to include two large open site options, but fewer buildings. Data for the model was collected from a number of sources, including area and location information from Google Earth and pricing information from accepted industry costing estimate guides. The LP model was developed using the Excel Solver program. The results of the project were interesting. A first pass analysis of the results showed that the smaller sites were the more cost effective design scenario. But further analysis of the numbers showed that the high cost of the large site was due mostly to the interconnect cost required because the site was located farther away from the point of usage than the smaller sites. This result emphasized the importance of both district selection criteria, as well as the financial advantages of using existing utility transmission infrastructure instead of developing new infrastructure for the district. There are future add-ons that could be done as a continuation of this project. The biggest is a more advanced financial model that includes not only more detailed costing design scenarios, but also includes some of the tax and grant incentives associated with green energy. Since eco-districts encompass a larger geographic area, there are more options available in the design, location, sizing and financing for a green energy system. The question posed in this project is whether it is more cost effective to have multiple systems spread across multiple small sites (such as roof tops) or have a few large systems located on a single large open site. The LP model for this project looked at minimizing cost while still achieving the system size goals set by the demand load of the model. The district that was evaluated was a modified version of the PSU Eco District. The district area was modified to include two large open site options, but fewer buildings. Data for the model was collected from a number of sources, including area and location information from Google Earth and pricing information from accepted industry costing estimate guides. The LP model was developed using the Excel Solver program. The results of the project were interesting. A first pass analysis of the results showed that the smaller sites were the more cost effective design scenario. But further analysis of the numbers showed that the high cost of the large site was due mostly to the interconnect cost required because the site was located farther away from the point of usage than the smaller sites. This result emphasized the importance of both district selection criteria, as well as the financial advantages of using existing utility transmission infrastructure instead of developing new infrastructure for the district. There are future add-ons that could be done as a continuation of this project. The biggest is a more advanced financial model that includes not only more detailed costing design scenarios, but also includes some of the tax and grant incentives associated with green energy. There was no drama, just a recognition that face to face meetings would be the exception and that we would have to work as a virtual team with each member taking responsibility for a section of the assignments. These same busy schedules that limited face time also forced the team to make efficient use of its resources. Team decisions were made quickly with the discussions focused on what issues needed to be addressed and how we could efficiently provide a solution. With limited interaction outside of class most of the teams initial bonding took place while walking from class. Despite busy schedules, two face to face team meetings were held during the semester. The first meetings effectiveness was limited when one team member missed a text message on the meetings location and another had to deal with personnel emergency. Fortunately this meeting was not typical of the team's character and did not set the tone for future performance. The second team meeting was much more successful with all members sharing information regarding their backgrounds and anecdotal stories as well as developing a plan for our class work. While the interpersonal aspect of this meeting generally would fit the forming stage the focus of the meeting was working developing a plan to complete the teams research paper. This fit well with Tuckman's storming stage of team development. Similarly, the transition to the Norming Stage was not clear cut. There were signs of Norming behavior from the teams initial meetings. Significantly the team members took responsibility to make major team decisions independently. Duygu, who during many of the meetings was more reserved, brought up that she felt we had chosen the wrong research project. This was a significant team performance milestone for several reasons. The objective of this research is to develop a strategic policy model for international collaboration in science and technology to bridge the gap between "top-down" and "bottom-up" approaches. A strategic policy model was developed in which the characteristics of ICST proposals and expert judgments are quantified to determine the relative importance the country's international S&T vision and objectives and specific sectors, and to evaluate the proposals accordingly. Four international evaluation criteria are proposed in this research: strategic importance (SI), potential impact (PI), human resource development (HRD), and matching fund from international partners (MF). Each proposal is evaluated with respect to each criterion and related sub-criteria. The value of each ICST proposal is then calculated by incorporating all of the elements at each level of the model. The output of this model is the ranking of the ICST proposals coming from the "bottom-up" approach that satisfy the national priorities and organizational requirements represented by the "top-down" approach.
