This spike in popularity is also reflected that over 70% of consumer grade “e-books” concerning 3D Printing were published in 2013. But, like many technologies, there is a question whether the current rush towards 3D printing in the consumer market will result in a “false start”, such as with tablet computing during the 1980’s and 1990’s, or if this precedes an a predictable adoption curve [3]. This purpose of this paper is to try and forecast the adoption rate of “consumer grade” 3D printers for use in a typical United States household. Several assumptions are made. The first assumption is made that the consumer will treat the 3D printer as a “durable good”. The second assumption is that the consumer’s purchasing limit will be $1000. The third assumption is that the cost of consumables will be less than the equivalent cost of the product when purchased. Despite the intense advertisements, the responses from customers didn’t appear as expected. The issue of cooking stoves is a significant one since the most commonly used stove and fuel type has serious health, environmental and economic downsides. As a result, there is increasing attention and resources being given to the idea of providing communities and households with stove and fuel types that are more efficient, produce less pollution, and are more easily maintained. There were 24 technologies stove and fuel combinations considered in the project. These technologies were evaluated against four criteria – efficiency, emissions, cost, and job creation. The source of information was ratings by experts specifically chosen based on their area of expertise. Although the surveys were sent to 15 experts, only five returned them in time for inclusion in the results of this paper. Due to the low number of returned surveys, each technology was only rated by one expert, instead of multiple expert rating per technology as was originally intended in the design of the model. Abstractions include plants and trees, which catch a portion of the water, pervious soils that infiltrate stormwater until saturated and natural changes in topography where stormwater accumulates. During more intense, longer storm evens the abstraction limit in a watershed can be reached and runoff occurs. In the process of developing areas for cities, towns, industrial sites and transportation the watershed characteristics of that area are changed and the quantity of abstraction in the developed area is reduced. Pervious soils are replaced with impervious surfaces and plants that abstract, absorb and release moisture through evapotranspiration are removed. As a result a significantly larger quantity of surface runoff is generated in these areas. There are a number of methods used to manage the quantity of runoff. Two popular options are the combined sewer system and the separate sewer system. The combined sewer system conveys stormwater runoff and sanitary sewage from households to a wastewater treatment plant. After treatment water is released into a receiving body and the quality of the effluent is monitored to comply with water quality regulations in general, or for water quality regulations at a particular receiving body of water. The separate sewer system, also known as the municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) conveys stormwater separate from sanitary waste. The MS4 generally discharges stormwater to a receiving body of water through a system of outfalls while sanitary sewage is conveyed to a wastewater treatment plant. Because stormwater picks up and transports pollutants deposited in urban areas, and is then discharged to a receiving body, or treated along with sanitary waste it is necessary reduce pollutants and/or reduce quantity of runoff for water quality and economic reasons. A mobile phone, cell phone or Smartphone all describe technology that has become common place in society, the thought of not being able to reach a friend or loved one at a moment’s notice is unheard of and for many unacceptable. The past 30 years has seen incredible innovation in microchip, memory and communication technologies that made our world truly wireless. Long gone are the days of needing a modem or network cable to be able to connect to the internet or your company’s network. Information on demand and at your finger tips has pushed computing needs beyond a person’s computer/laptop to the device that everyone has with them all the time, their phone. Today the Smartphone is a device capable of providing a wide range of communication, business, entertainment and computing needs. Two companies became early leaders in the Smartphone market. Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) was the first to provide users with advanced business communication capabilities. General Electric (GE), one of the leading producers of refrigerators in the world is being modeled as the manufacturer of choice because they possess the diverse technological know-how to improve this product. GE was chosen as the model manufacturer because they exhibit the forward thinking traits and large business diversification to prepare a technology roadmapping study. This paper will utilize technology roadmapping to create a plan for how GE could focus their effort and resources in their refrigeration business unit to develop a refrigerator in the future which will harness the market drivers to capture more of the market share. Technology Roadmapping is collaborative process first developed by the CEO of Motorola and allows to experts and researchers in the field of study to determine the market drivers, technologies, products/components, and resources. These items are put to a time line during the iterative initial steps then are connected through links. The benefit of using this method in this study is that it allows many different market drivers that consumers have to develop a refrigerator that largely meets those needs. In essence, GE wishes to find out the market pull to develop technologies that push consumers more towards their refrigerators. This study will show that technology roadmapping can be successfully used to create a plan of action over a time span of only 20 years that will integrate existing refrigerator technology and identify gaps in those technologies. The refrigerator GE ultimately creates for this hypothetical future is not set in stone which comes from the fact that market drivers and other issues may change. Likewise, ‘the grid’ is the electric grid that contains a network of transmission lines, substations, transformers, and more equipment that deliver power system from the power plants to the power plug-in at your home or business.
