Strategic Management is a discipline that determines a firm’s intent and direction for creating a competitive advantage and wealth. Often, strategies are set though polices that govern the firm’s products and services, how it positions itself to compete, the choice of scope and diversity to compete, as well as the administration polices used to define and coordinate work. Two prevailing economic theories that help explain how an economic phenomenon affects economic competition are Schumpeterian and Kirznerian. Both theories attempt to explain entrepreneurship and its effect on the economy. Firms that are able to learn and exploit technological opportunities before their competitors position themselves with a competitive position, while reaping the profits. The theory of Absorptive Capacity is predicated on the firm’s ability to predict more accurately the nature of technological advances through the accumulation of the firm’s knowledge by recognizing the value of new external information, assimilating it, and exploiting it commercially. One of Intel’s factories in Ronler Acres campus has increased factory capacity to make room to produce the next 14 nm technology process. The amount of manufacturing personnel needs to increase in order to make up for the increased amount of tools in the new factory space while still maintaining “lean manufacturing”. In this paper we attempt to solve a problem by coming up with a minimum personnel number from the manufacturing side for one of Intel’s factories in Hillsboro, Oregon since the number of tools for the next technology has increased, the amount of process operations have increased and the factory space has expanded. The results of this research show how the use of a linear program is effective at providing a minimum staffing model in order to fulfill the job responsibilities of two types of groups, Manufacturing Technicians and Engineering Technicians. Similar to Amazon’s success in the revolutionizing the retailing industry with Ecommerce, 3D printing technology is showing the promise of turning healthcare on its heel with its capacity of rapid prototyping and personalizing the solution to the patient. This gives us an opportunity to study this innovation using technology management principles and tools. We explored the technology using engineering, technology forecast and motivating factors (Stengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT)) models. We also conducted a market analysis to assess the expected economic return. The study highlighted the engineering challenge in developing the right biological materials and the appropriate 3D printing manufacturing processes. A time-based trend analysis of Bibliometrics in this technology segment drew us to the conclusion that this technology is straddling the innovator and the early adopter phases of the Technology Adoption Life Cycle (TALC). On the policy side, the motivating factors study highlighted the legal, ethical and regulatory challenges. But, the motivating factors review also highlighted the expansive benefits, both profit-based and humanitarian, of this technology. The research put together, showed that this disruptive technology will be a game-changer in the future of healthcare. Speci cally, we looked at 16 proposed and hypothetical generation projects, and used a variety of parameters to determine which projects optimized pro t, while adhering to constraints concerning the required overall capacity, government regulations regarding environmental standards, reliability, and desired level of diversity in its generation methods. Our results showed that, based on a grouping of 4 potential projects for each generation type, that the optimal solution involves funding 2 hydro projects, 1 wind project, and 1 natural gas project. This con rms in some ways our original hypothesis, which was that hydroelectricity would be the cheapest in our region, and yet the model showed that due to diversity of generation requirements, other methods were chosen with nearly equal funding. Overall, the information and analysis provided in this study should be bene cial to policy makers and project planners not as a de nitive plan for investment, but as a demonstration of an optimization technique that, given greater access to more accurate proprietary data, could provide a sound argument in support of a particular course of action when determining the optimal investment strategy for a utility company such as PGE.
