Coordination of plant conservation efforts is also needed to ensure that resources and expertise are used in a strategic, efficient, and effective manner.We argue that no country is currently getting plant conservation right; plants are becoming increasingly rare around the world. Plants are often not fully protected by policy, their conservation is underfunded, and their importance is underappreciated. However, some countries have progressed further than others. Here we outline areas where the United States is strong and highlight components that need work to meet the country’s plant conservation needs. These decisions involve complex problems that are both poorly understood in scientific terms and subject to rapid, potentially catastrophic change over time. A comprehensive, whole systems approach that adequately addresses the risks and uncertainties involved is necessary, but this is a daunting challenge for researchers, decision makers, and managers. They must develop the capacity to plan, coordinate, and implement a program that improves sustainable societal well-being across national boundaries in the face of these uncertainties, which include impacts on native capture fisheries, biodiversity, wetlands and other biological resources, ecosystem services (i.e., the ecological characteristics, functions, or processes that directly or indirectly contribute to human well-being), and indigenous cultures and ways of life. In an effort to analyse the financial risks of the mussel farming in Greece, we examined the profitability of the different farm sizes (1 to 4 ha) under the present situation of the local market and the modern production practices. Assuming that a farm works at a reasonable 80 % of its annual capacity and uses the widely accepted long-line technique, it was demonstrated that a farm size less than 2 ha is not viable economically. Moreover, the cost of the new establishments and the modernization of the existing ones is affordable only if larger enterprise structures are adopted. Consequently, the past EU and/or public support (up to 45% of the total cost of the fixed assets) has been critical for the development of the industry. Taking in account that the majority of the Greek mussel farms are rather small (1-2 ha), we concluded that for financial sustainability the sector needs to be restructured and be organised in larger schemes, such as those of producers organisations or co-operatives, in order to benefit from scale economics and attract better funding. At Macro level, life reef fish for food (LRFF) plays a greater role in increasing export revenue since most of the fish are sold in overseas markets such Hong Kong and China. At micro level, LRFF provides secured income and employment for people in coastal areas where poverty is persistent. The capacity of the fishery resource to supply the increasing demand, however, is limited due to the nature of non-convexity of the fishery system and the backward bending supply curve dictated by its yield function. This paper explores the consequences of such constraints by imposing the non-linear dynamic model developed previously by Rosser (2000). The study was empirically tested in one the Indonesian LRFF fishery in South Sulawesi and the results show that the non-convexity as seen from the backward bending supply curve will result in unsustainable management of the fishery which lead to poverty and ecosystem catastrophic in the coastal area if no serious actions are taken.
