Year: 1974 This was a two-part study, employing the self and informant, pre and post treatment, forms of the Personal Adjustment and Role Skills Scale, the PARS Scale. In this study seven of the PARS Scale factors were employed: Interpersonal Involvement, Agitation-Depression, Attention-Confusion, Alcohol-Drug, Outside Social, Household Management (females), and Anxiety (males). This study was conducted at Delaunay Institute for Mental Health, an outpatient community mental health clinic in a low socioeconomic catchment area. Part One of the study employed a random sample of seventy applicants, male and female, ages sixteen to sixty-four, who applied to Delaunay for treatment services between November of 1972 and July of 1973 and who completed, at least, the self-pretreatment PARS Scale. This sample was administered the self and informant pre PARS Scale at initial interview. In October of 1973, the number of treatment sessions in the three months following initial interview was secured from billing cards. At this same time, therapists at Delaunay were requested to assess the sample on their progress in therapy at that time or at termination. Four categories were possible: great, moderate, slight, and no progress. They were also requested to identify the certainty with which they made the assessment according to: great, moderate, or slight certainty. Following this, the self-pretreatment PARS Scale scores were correlated with number of treatment sessions. No relationship appeared for females between number of treatment sessions and self pre PARS Scale scores. For males, a non-significant trend was noted on most factors, indicating that a high self pre PARS score was indicative of fewer treatment sessions. A significant and inverse relationship between the self pre PARS Scale score on Alcohol-Drug and number of treatment sessions occurred for males, indicating that a high score on this factor was suggestive of fewer treatment sessions. The self-pretreatment PARS Scale scores were correlated with therapist assessment of progress in therapy. No relationship appeared for females. For males, no significant relationship appeared but a non-significant trend was indicated, suggesting that a high self pre PARS Scale score was indicative of a favorable therapist assessment on progress in therapy. Part Two of the study employed a non-random sample of fifteen females who had provided self and informant, pre and post treatment, PARS Scale scores. Post treatment, informant data was notably deficient in this part of the study and prevented the employment of males in the sample. Descriptive data on income, education, marital status, and presenting problem were provided for this sample. The sample was administered the self and informant, pretreatment, PARS Scale at initial interview. Three months after initial interview they were administered the self and informant, post treatment, PARS Scale if they remained in treatment for at least three months. As in Part One of this study, number of treatment sessions for the three months following initial interview were secured from the billing cards. Results showed a significant and direct relationship between the self-post PARS score on Outside Social, the informant post PARS score on Alcohol-Drug and therapist behavioral assessment. High scores on these factors indicated a favorable therapist behavioral assessment. Evaluation of treatment services with the PARS Scale in Part Two of this study found the self, pre and post treatment, PARS Scale scores on Attention-Confusion to be the only PARS scores showing significant differences after three months of treatment. None of the remaining self-PARS scores and none of three informant PARS scores indicated any significant differences. It was recommended that the predictive capacity of the PARS Scale not be explored further. Further exploration of the use of the PARS Scale for evaluative purposes was suggested due to the limitations of the research design with regard to specificity and sampling. Finally, exploration of specific and individualized treatment evaluation, suggested by recent psychotherapy research, was encouraged. We are interested in the adjustment of the child to the changes which occur during separation and divorce, and we maintain the attitude that the lives of children are affected in some way when a marriage or family unit dissolves. A generally accepted belief is that divorce produces negative consequences in the lives of children as shown in their behavior. However, recently a number of studies have suggested that divorce need not be a negative experience, at least to the degree most people feel it is. Factors that influence the effects on children include: the intensity of the conflict between the divorcing partners; the degree to which parents demonstrate concern for the children and help them prepare for the separation; the child’s attachment to the custodial parent; and the level of maturity and general personality characteristics of the child. The primary goal of the study presented here is to determine the extent to which negative behavior changes in children are visible immediately following a divorce. Additionally we wish to describe those changes and determine their frequency. Finally, we wish to relate such changes to certain to certain social variables including economic status and age and sex of the children. It was revolutionary in style because it provided a federalized income floor for the elderly, blind and disabled, previously provided for under various federal, state, and local welfare programs. The program was called Supplemental Security Income, or SSI. The Social Security Administration, a long-standing institution in the financial community because of old age, survivors and disability insurance (OASDI) benefits, was chosen to administer 551. SS represented a new innovation for the Social Security Administration who had never before had to provide non-work-related benefits to indigents. In order to incorporate the SS! program, the Social Security Administration had to change its organizational goals and functions. Organizational change is an increasingly important phenomenon to be researched today. This study examines the initiation of a new program, SSI, in the context of intraorganizational change. * The basic hypothesis is that the implementation of a new program function within an existing organization causes the organization to undergo a process of change to incorporate the new program. Due to the nature of the extent of change involved when the Social Security Administration undertook the Supplemental Security Income Program, it was hypothesized there would be a subsequent change in the interorganizational relationships of the Social Security Administration and the local community. This assumption was made because the new goal of the Social Security Administration relative to SS was to provide information and referral services to an indigent population previously not serviced by Social Security. This study attempts to examine the changes going on within the Social Security Administration because of the adoption of the SSI program and relate them to these four issues : 1. The extent and nature of the SSI program and the program change, specifically with regard to the elderly population. 2. The subsequent changes in interorganizational relationships and contacts called for during the implementation of SSI . 3. The development and success of information and referral services as part of the Social Security Administration's functioning. 4. The role of the Social Security Administration within the local community. These issues will be examined within the context of the intraorganizational change process and will be reviewed again at the conclusion of the study. *The concept of "intraorganizational change" as used here is defined as change within the focal, or particular, organization being studied. When a person in our society reaches age 65, he or she may suddenly be perceived as of decreased worth and may face forced retirement and quite often may have to adjust to a lifestyle of poverty. If an elderly person's physical health begins to wane, a nursing home may suddenly become the day to day environment he or she must accept. The therapists in the Residential Care Program, which offers mental health services to residents of nursing homes, at Elahan Mental Health Clinic and Center for Family Living in Vancouver, Washington realized that assertion training might be one way to help their elderly clients gain more control over their live and thus implemented an assertion training program. The following is an evaluation of that module which was introduced as part of the Elderly Day Treatment Program in 1977.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Anxiety level of graduate students in social work Author: Kouidou-Giles, Sophia, McKee, George Albert Year: 1971 This study was designed to determine (1) the trend of anxiety level of social work students, term by term, over the academic year; (2) the cyclical trend of anxiety level of social work students within each term and (3) the effects of age and sex on level of anxiety among social work students. Anxiety was measured with the IPAT – 8 Parallel Form Anxiety Battery. This test was administered to twenty randomly selected first year students in the School of Social Work during the 1969-1970 academic year at Portland State University. Data was collected from six test administrations which took place at the beginning and the end of each term. Analysis of variance in a 2x2x2x3 factorial design simultaneously investigated all four variables. Some variation among these variables and their interactions was found, but only the “time of quarter” main effect reached statistical significance. A cyclical pattern of anxiety following a high-in-the-beginning, low-at-the-end of each term trend was observed. Anxiety, however, remained quite level over the three terms of the academic year. Nor was anxiety level related to differences in age or sex. These findings have led the authors to speculate that the uncertainty of a new situation at the beginning of each new term created more anxiety than did the final field evaluations, classroom examinations, papers or other outside influences such as the Kent State incidents etc., and that increased structuring at the beginning of each term might help to allay that anxiety. Perhaps it could be said that each individual’s role as a “social work graduate student” had a greater effect on his anxiety level than did sex, age, or important events not directly related to school expectations. Since it is the agency’s responsibility to weigh the needs of the disturbed child and provide appropriate services according to those needs, their basic question--whether residential treatment or another mode of treatment is more effective--remains unanswered and, in many instances, uncontested. If residential child care benefits the disturbed child, which characteristics of that agency are conducive to the improvement of the child’s behavior and re-adaption? The following study will attempt to isolate such characteristics. We will provide behavior samples of twenty-one emotionally disturbed children before, during, and following treatment at The Parry Center. These behaviors are presented descriptively, and will relate to prior environmental influences (adjustment to home, school, etc.); treatment factors (those conducive to behavior change, those detrimental); and post-residential success. We will also compare these descriptions with The Parry Center’s recent research study: Eighteen Boys…A Descriptive Follow-Up Study (June 10, 1970.).
