The church and extended family are less influential on the family today. The school is less influential. Where does the family turn for support? Social agencies have become the source for low cost aid for the family. The following study explores the extent to which social agencies provide this support for families in this community. To that end, project investigators have developed a research model of work-family fit by means of an exhaustive literature review of over 350 articles and books on work and family, the secondary data analysis of the North Carolina Family Caregiver Survey (Brennan & Poertner, 1997), and a focus group study with 41 employed parents of children with emotional or behavioral disorders (Rosenzweig, Brennan, & Ogilvie, 1998). The work-family fit research model includes as antecedent conditions (a) types and characteristics of parental employment, (b) types and characteristics of the children’s educational and child care arrangements, (c) the social support available to family members, and (d) family household characteristics. The outcomes featured in the model encompass (a) parent stress levels, (b) employment absenteeism, (c) work interuptions and tardiness, and (d) difficulty combining work and family life. The model also contains such intervening variables as the strategies parents use to balance work and family demands and the services they use. Currently, pilot interviews are being conducted with 60 family members who are employed at least 30 hours per week and who have children living in the home between the ages of 6 and 18 years who have emotional or behavioral disorders. Year: 2016 Finding fit between work and family responsibilities is challenging for parents, especially when raising a child with mental health difficulties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of children’s problematic behaviors to maternal employment and difficulty combining work and family obligations. Data were analyzed from 174 mothers parenting a child with a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who completed child problem behavior (child behavior checklist), family functioning, and employment measures at baseline and 12 months later. Results from logistic regression analysis indicated that children’s problematic behaviors predicted maternal employment. Structural equation modeling showed that children’s higher baseline scores on the child behavior checklist internalizing scale were related to difficulty combining work and family at 12 months, even after controlling for difficulty of combining work and family at baseline. Children’s externalizing scores were not found to predict difficulty combining work and family responsibilities. Further analysis did not confirm mediation between children’s externalizing and internalizing behaviors, family conflict, and difficulty combining work and family. Given these results, service providers need to more comprehensively address the intersection of children’s mental health difficulties and work–family fit in order to better support caregivers as parents and employees. Year: 2016 Beginning in February 2016, the North Douglas County (NDC) communities of Drain, Elkton, and Yoncalla, Oregon engaged in a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) planning process, focusing on children ages birth-to-8 and their families. The purpose of this process was to explore, understand, and integrate linkages between early learning and young child and family health; identify health-related resources currently available and accessible to NDC families; and prioritize health areas of interest to be explored during the CHNA. The North Douglas County CHNA builds on community partnerships already established in the region through initiatives that aim to coordinate and align early learning and K-12 systems. The work of Yoncalla Early Works (“YEW”, initiated in 2012 with funding from The Ford Family Foundation and Children’s Institute) and North Douglas P3 (“NDP3”, initiated in 2014 with funding from the Oregon Community Foundation) demonstrate community commitment to supporting young children and families. The work of community members through these initiatives laid the foundation for the region’s readiness to engage in a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) planning process Ultimately, this first planning phase of the CHNA resulted in recommendations to conduct Phase 2 of the CHNA in North Douglas County, and is expected to get underway in summer/fall 2016 in collaboration with community members. The Community Health Needs Assessment will seek to answer the following questions: 1. What does health look like for children ages birth-to-8 and their families in North Douglas County? 2. What health services are available and accessible to children and families in North Douglas County? 3. What health services do families in North Douglas County need and want? 4. An alternative stepwise progression model of aftercare was proposed. This model identified community tenure as the most appropriate goal for initial aftercare efforts. Attempts to identify correlates of the establishment of community tenure by mental hospital releasees were reviewed. It was found that the ex-patient's ability to remain in the community is not highly correlated with the extent to which he manifests deviant behavior. This finding was interpreted as an indication that environmental factors may play significant part in ex-patients’ avoidance of rehospitalization. Data were presented which indicated that a clear majority of mental hospital releasees take up residency immediately with family members. It was hypothesized, then, that measurable family variables are correlated with the ability of the ex-patient to achieve community tenure. An attempt was made to examine this hypothesis in the light of relevant research. Studies of the issue which contained substantive empirical support were categorized into four topic areas: family tolerance of the ex-patient's symptomatic behavior, kin role which the family affords to the ex-patient, familial expectations of the ex-patient's performance, and family attitudes and personality characteristics. After reviewing the studies of authors who attempted to assess the degree of correlation between the capacity of the ex-patient’s family to tolerate symptomatic behavior on the part of the ex-patient and the ex-patient’s ability to avoid rehospitalization, it was concluded that the linear correlation between the two variables which would be predicted logically may not exist. A review of studies of the relationship between the kin role which the ex-patient's family affords to him and the ex-patient's ability to achieve community tenure yielded a tentative conclusion that returning to the social biological role of “child” (son or daughter) as opposed to the kin role of spouse was positively correlated with remaining in the community. After examining studies which attempted to explore the relationship between familial expectations of instrumental performance on the part of the ex-patient and the ability of the ex-patient to avoid rehospitalization, it was concluded that little support was provided for the hypothesis that the two variables are related. A survey of attempts to identify family attitude and personality characteristic correlates of ex-patient achievement of community tenure resulted in arrival at the conclusion that such efforts, as a whole, have met with little success, although significant correlations between two general family attitudes toward mental illness and ex-patient avoidance of rehospitalization were found.
