  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Hawk Rim: A Geologic and Paleontological Description of a New Barstovian Locality in Central Oregon Author: McLaughlin, Win Year: 2012, 2014 Hawk Rim represents a new mid-Miocene site in Eastern Oregon. This time period offers a rare chance to observe dramatic climatic changes, such as sudden warming trends. The site is sedimentologically and stratigraphically consistent with the Mascall Formation of the John Day Basin to the north and east of Hawk Rim. Hawk Rim preserves taxa such as canids Cynarctoides acridens and Paratomarctus temerarius, the felid Pseudaelurus skinneri, castorids Anchitheriomys and Monosaulax, tortoises and the remains of both cormorants and owls. Hawk Rim has yielded a new genus and species of mustelid. As individuals these taxa are of interest, but the real story is told by the paleoecology. The lower reaches of the section have lacustrine diatomite layers as well as preserved logs, suggesting the presence of a wet, forested ecosystem as conformed by the structure of the paleosols. Climate data allow us to make analyses of large-scale ecological trends in mid-Miocene Oregon. A CASE STUDY FROM OREGON Author: Pruch, Jared Year: 2017 In part because of the state’s unique land use system, Oregon’s land trusts have largely focused their efforts on the protection of lands with wildlife habitat values, rather than productive agricultural land. And yet a confluence of contemporary trends – including population growth, aging farmer-landowners, and a growing regard for the conservation values embedded in well-stewarded farmland – are causing some land trusts to re-evaluate their conservation priorities. By conducting in-depth interviews with land trust staff and board members, farmers and ranchers, and land use advocates around the state, my work seeks to make transparent the network of influences underlying this shift. Making use of nonprofit management theory, I argue that land trusts change their conservation priorities through a combination of environmental assessment and managerial vision. Several predictors – willingness to innovate, agricultural representation within the organization, and community priorities – increase the likelihood that land trusts will include farmland as a conservation priority. This qualitative study examined the experience of middle school science teachers from western Oregon, finding that while participating teachers accept the science of climate change and express concern about it, many teachers are reluctant to make the topic a priority in their classrooms. When they do include the subject, teachers frequently address “both sides.” They also report that students have persistent doubts and misconceptions about climate change. What accounts for these trends? I argue that the way teachers address climate change is a result of complex interactions between structural pressures, emotional pressures, and cultural pressures. I conclude that, in order to promote the inclusion of sound climate science instruction in public schools, advocates of climate change education need to address challenges at all these levels: structural, emotional, and cultural. The language and practices of â wellness tourismâ which prevail in Oregon differ significantly from those widely applied in Europe, where the concept is firmly established, both legally and culturally. Consequently, the ideas highlighted in this paper are intended to support further discussion of the critical benefits of health-related tourism for Montenegro. In addition, the visitor experiences and data from Oregon may encourage further consideration of alternative resources and preventive therapeutic treatments that would complement existing curative facilities, and provide meaningful opportunities for small- and medium-sized hotels and tour operators in Crna Gora (Montenegro).
