This building housed the Wing Hong Hai Company, a mercantile store and Chinese laundry, from 1889 to 1926. Beneath the modern concrete that encircles the building remains part of the rich history of the former occupants of The Dalles Chinatown. Eric Gleason and Jacquie Cheng, owners of 210 East 1st Street, set about restoring the Wing Hong Hai Company building and with it, the memory of a Chinatown long forgotten. This thesis will describe the artifacts recovered excavations, provides a functional context for those artifacts, and evaluates them in the broader historical context of the region. It will also examine the functions of the Wing Hong Hai Company and what role it played within the larger societal context of The Dalles Chinatown. During the summer of 2016, Oregon State University conducted preliminary excavations of the hospital at Fort Yamhill, Oregon (35PO75). Fort Yamhill (1856-1866), has long been a focus of OSU’s field schools, offering glimpses into garrison life through the eyes of the officers and the enlisted men. However, up until recently, little was known about how the Army Medical Department operated within Fort Yamhill’s system. This thesis combines extensive archival research and exploratory excavations to create an understanding of military hospital operation and medical practices of this era and provide insight into the hospital’s construction and operation at Fort Yamhill. Detailed information regarding fort medical staff has been used to create an image of the hospital and its operation throughout the fort’s occupation. Additionally, hospital records were used in conjunction with contemporary diaries to offer discussion on the condition of enlisted men at Fort Yamhill and the treatment of non-military patients. It has diversified widely across its range—both morphologically and genetically—and as such might rightly be called a species complex. Our ongoing work aims to determine where boundaries between potentially undescribed species lie in Oregon and to identify morphological differences that may help diagnose those taxonomic entities. Meristic and linear morphometric data were collected from preserved specimens originating in four major drainage basins in desert Oregon. Morphometric data points to some potential phenotypic differences between fish reared in springs (slow-moving water) and fish reared in streams (fast-moving water). In particular, spring fish from each basin tend to have shallower bodies and shorter heads than the stream fish from the same basin. The morphologic differences described by this study will give insight in to the evolutionary history of this species complex and how geography has influenced the diversification of R. osculus.
