One group that is disproportionately affected by food insecurity is families. Full Tummies, Full lives (FTFL) was designed to improve nutrition among children in families in Benton County, Oregon experiencing food insecurity by providing education, skill building and community support. To evaluate FTFL, seven one-on-one interviews were conducted with professionals working in the areas of food security and/or nutrition education. The goal of these interviews was to gain their opinions on the feasibility of nutrition education and cooking skills programs, learn more about the needs of low-income and food insecure families and the barriers these families experience to participating in health promotion programs. The information gathered from these interviews was then used to evaluate FTFL to determine if FTFL is relevant for food insecure families, addresses areas that other available programs do not; focuses on the correct needs of this population; and if the components of FTFL are feasible. Proposed changes to the program, as well as directions for future research are also discussed. Oregon residents with a terminal illness have had the option to use aid-in-dying under the Oregon Death with Dignity Act (DWDA) since 1997. The DWDA allows terminally ill Oregonians to make a request for lethal dosages of medication, prescribed by physicians for the purpose of self-administering to end one's life. Many studies have been published on patient motivations for seeking hastened death, experiences of physicians, nurses, and hospice workers with persons who have died using aid-in-dying, and attitudes of the general public, medically ill persons, and healthcare professionals toward aid-in-dying, yet virtually no research has explored the experience of family members who have had a relative seek or use aid-in-dying. This qualitative study explored the bereavement experiences of persons who had a family member die using aid-in-dying during the past three years. Twenty-two participants were interviewed about their bereavement experiences using a structured interview. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using Grounded Theory methods. Themes that emerged from the data revealed that aid-in-dying allows for the opportunity to say goodbye to one's loved one, and to plan and prepare for the death. Grief was eased by knowing that aid-in-dying was the loved one's choice, that the mode of death was legal, and that love ones avoided prolonged suffering. Personal and family agreement with loved ones decision to use aid-in-dying also eased grief. Conflict arose from mixed feelings or disagreement with loved ones decision to use aid-in-dying. Grief reconciliation from conflict included expressing feelings to others, religious support for aid-in-dying, thoughts that the loved one's death was imminent, thoughts that using aid-in-dying was what the loved one wanted, and thoughts that the timing was appropriate because had loved one's health further declined they may have risked being able to meet the law's requirement to self-administer the prescription and would not have been able to die using aid-in-dying. Seedlings were placed in three soil treatments with varying ratios of potting mix and native soil. Seedlings experienced high rates of mortality unrelated to treatment. Seeds and seedlings were planted in the fall along four transects of varying disturbance and previous species occupation. Spring survival rates provided little evidence for an increase in population size of Astragalus peckii in the four transects after planting.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Improving community profiles for Oregon fisheries and coastal communities through collaboration Author: Package, Christina In an effort to supplement the recently completed NOAA fishing community profiles, three coastal Oregon communities were chosen as sites for a collaborative project designed to produce long-form profiles. In order to provide a representation of the coast Newport, Port Orford, and Garibali, Oregon were included based on community size, fishery types, and gear types. Community researchers from each community along with social scientists at Oregon State University teamed up to collect ethnographic data not included in the already existing profiles. The community researchers were trained in interviewing techniques, conducting the bulk of the 64 interviews completed by the project. Community researchers interviewed their own peers in their communities in addition to being involved in all aspects of the project. Three long-form community profiles were produced. These profiles include information on the importance of fishing to each community, characteristics of fishermen, descriptions of fishing families and how they have changed over time, support services for fishing and connections to other communities, communication within the fishing community and with others, perspectives on management and effects of management actions, changes in the economics of fishing and seafood and changes in fishing effort, perceptions of the state of the ocean and its resources, and perceptions of the future of fishing in each location. This cutting edge approach of utilizing community members as social science researchers was analyzed and the pros and cons of this approach were revealed, with the positive aspects outweighing the negatives. With the baby boomer cohort retiring and arguably having more time for outdoor recreation, coupled with population increases and government agencies encouraging people to recreate outdoors, areas such as state and national parks will likely continue seeing high visitation. It is imperative, therefore, for outdoor recreation managers and researchers to understand issues related to use levels such as reported encounters, perceived crowding, normative tolerances, and behavioral responses to these conditions. This thesis uses data from visitors at coastal state parks in Oregon to examine: (a) their encounters, norms, and crowding; (b) the proportion of visitors who encounter more people than their normative tolerance, and whether these individuals feel most crowded and are most supportive of direct actions for managing use levels at these parks; and (c) behavioral responses that visitors are likely to impose if their norms are violated, and whether these responses are related to the salience (i.e., importance) of encounters. Data were obtained from questionnaires completed by 9,063 visitors at nine day and 10 overnight state parks on the Oregon coast. Results showed that overnight visitors encountered more people and felt more crowded than day visitors, with 68% of all overnight and 46% of all day visitors feeling crowded. Compared to visitors who encountered fewer people than their normative tolerance, visitors who encountered more people than their norm felt significantly more crowded and were more supportive of strategies for restricting use levels. Day visitors would respond differently than overnight visitors if they encountered more people than they would tolerate seeing (i.e., their norm). Day visitors, for example, would be most likely to avoid peak use times or redefine their experience, whereas overnight visitors would be most likely to express their opinions to those close to them (e.g., friends, family, members of their group). Visitors who indicated that encounters were salient (i.e., important) would be more likely to engage in these behavioral responses than those who did not consider encounters to be salient. These findings also differed among some of the state parks sampled.
