In order to provide a representation of the coast Newport, Port Orford, and Garibali, Oregon were included based on community size, fishery types, and gear types. Community researchers from each community along with social scientists at Oregon State University teamed up to collect ethnographic data not included in the already existing profiles. The community researchers were trained in interviewing techniques, conducting the bulk of the 64 interviews completed by the project. Community researchers interviewed their own peers in their communities in addition to being involved in all aspects of the project. Three long-form community profiles were produced. These profiles include information on the importance of fishing to each community, characteristics of fishermen, descriptions of fishing families and how they have changed over time, support services for fishing and connections to other communities, communication within the fishing community and with others, perspectives on management and effects of management actions, changes in the economics of fishing and seafood and changes in fishing effort, perceptions of the state of the ocean and its resources, and perceptions of the future of fishing in each location. This cutting edge approach of utilizing community members as social science researchers was analyzed and the pros and cons of this approach were revealed, with the positive aspects outweighing the negatives. Oregon is in the midst of major changes to the way it manages use of the ocean off its shores. Consideration for all stakeholder groups will contribute to defensible decisions regarding the use of ocean and coastal resources. This relies on an understanding of the various stakeholders in ocean resources, which is lacking for some groups. This research sought to improve the understanding of one such group, which to date has not been thoroughly documented: the non-consumptive recreational ocean user (NROU) community. The NROU group includes surfers, kayakers, boaters, divers, and many others, and it makes economic, cultural, and environmental contributions to Oregon’s coastal communities. Members of this group are both residents of coastal communities and visitors from other regions of Oregon, and their numbers are expected to grow. This report details what we have learned from research about this group as a whole and by the subgroups that comprise this community of interest: what they require for recreation, their values and opinions, and where they are recreating. We also sought to gauge their attitudes toward alternative energy, specifically marine renewable energy, which is an emerging use and stakeholder of the ocean off of Oregon’s coast. This new ocean use has the potential to conflict with existing uses, if not carefully planned. Our study aims to provide information on the NROU community to help facilitate sound ocean planning for all uses and users. With the ebb and flow of population and the economic growth of Oregon coastal communities, three hypotheses have been generated about the ability of these communities to meet future water supply needs. The purpose of this project was to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing coastal community water suppliers as a whole and to ultimately improve the prospects for meeting future water needs. Findings show that contrary to the first hypothesis, most of those interviewed do not think that economic development is constrained by waters supply. However, it does appear that it would be difficult for state economic development officials to match businesses and industries interested in relocating to the Oregon coast with community water supply availability and reliability. Findings also show that the major problem facing community water suppliers in preparing water management and conservation plans cited by interviewees is financial. Though Oregon’s coastal communities face several planning, management, physical, economic, and regulatory challenges in preparing for future water supply needs, numerous partnership, conservation, and research and training opportunities exist. What is needed is an opportunity for a facilitated process of restructuring water supply systems. The coastal regions of Chile and Oregon are some of the most productive ecosystems in the world. The intertidal communities of both areas have been well studied, but much remains to be learned about how those communities are structured over large scales. Here, I explore the upwelling regimes and the subsequent bottom-up effects which have been documented for both regions. These effects include differences in metabolic rates of invertebrates, recruitment rates, plankton and algal growth, and topdown interaction strengths. I focus on my study of the common Chilean predatory crab, Acanthocyclus gayi, to demonstrate how bottom-up effects can regulate community dynamics via facilitation. I found that feeding rates of A. gayi were mediated by algal turf heights directly linked to upwelling regimes. I conclude that understanding the complex ecological links associated with bottom-up effects are increasingly important as we attempt to understand community dynamics at the large scales relevant to conservation and management decisions.
