Land-grant universities were tasked by the 1862 Morrill Act with providing both a practical and liberal education for all students. The liberal arts, however, were quickly sidelined from this dual purpose with the increasing emphasis placed on the practical arts during the two world wars. This thesis narrates the struggle of the liberal arts at Oregon State University to achieve equality with the practical arts on the basis of their intrinsic benefits to society instead of merely as a utilitarian servant to fields yielding tangible developments. As a case study, this thesis uses the story of the Great Hall: a large performing arts center that was slated to be built on the OSU campus during the late 1970’s using donations raised by the OSU Foundation. Although the Great Hall was ultimately too grand and expensive for its time, the great promise and potential of the building serves as a window into how the liberal arts have been and continue to be perceived and prioritized in land-grant universities, as well as how society values the arts and culture in relation to practical development. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate Oregon public high school history teacher perspectives concerning standards-based reform initiatives springing from the No Child Left Behind legislation. The central question addressed in this study is: At what level has Standards-Based Education reform initiatives impacted Oregon high school history instruction and classroom practices? Paramount to that investigation are questions concerning curriculum guidance, assessment practices, teacher praxis, and school climate conditions. This research enterprise uses a mixed methods approach which encompasses quantitative and qualitative components. As a descriptive study, a two-phase explanatory approach is achieved utilizing an electronic teacher survey instrument and selective follow-up teacher interviews. The survey instrument was modeled after a three state comprehensive research project implemented by the Rand Corporation entitled Standard-Based Accountability Under No Child Left Behind (2007). To accomplish this research investigation, all of the public high school history teachers in Oregon were solicited to participate in the study. Regional distinctions inclusive of urban, suburban, and rural designations were allocated to evaluate any geographic differences in responses. The major findings of the study reveal that teachers perceived an alignment of curriculum to state mandated standards in history, consider their textbooks representative of those standards, acknowledge minimal changes in their teaching praxis for the 2008-2009 school year, rarely administer the voluntary state sponsored Social Studies Knowledge and Skill Test or progress tests, receive minimal administrative or district curriculum oversight, find student preparation and absenteeism to be impediments to learning, and have limited professional development activities associated with state standards or history assessment activities. The conclusions derived from the study show that without a mandated assessment the reality of alignment with standards can not definitively be established. Additionally as an exploratory study the groundwork has been established to further evaluate: the adaptation of content standards, the need for a mandated assessment device in the social studies, the isolationism of Oregon classroom teachers, the limited state and district support and oversight for standards, the need to consider what evidence ascertains that student improvement naturally stems from mandated reforms based on state sponsored curriculum and performance standards. Human body flight is an umbrella term for any sport involving maneuvering one’s body in a meaningful way through a column of relative wind. Human body flight includes skydiving, which was the origin of human body flight, as well as BASE jumping, wingsuiting, canopy flying, and indoor skydiving. The recent origin of skydiving as well as the fact that there are relatively few skydivers worldwide created a rich environment to write this thesis, which is likely the first attempt to record the recent history of sport skydiving and human body flight. The focus of this research was in-depth interviews with some of the most important skydivers to make contributions to the sport since its beginning in the 1950’s. These sources were used to document the development of human body flight as a sport and lay the foundation for historical documentation of skydiving. This thesis details the origin of skydiving, the major equipment changes that allowed the sport to flourish, the introduction of tandem skydiving and its effect on business and sport diversification, wingsuiting, indoor skydiving, and the effect of advertising on human body flight.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: The role of competition, community, and priority in the discovery of the tau lepton Author: Swanner, Leandra This study examines the interactions between the scientific communities of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in the discovery of the tau lepton by physicist Martin Perl between 1973- 1977. Perl became interested in searching for heavy leptons through positron-electron collision experiments using the newly constructed Mark I detector at SLAC, and his search resulted in the discovery of the tau lepton. Although the experiments responsible for the discovery of this new particle were part of a collaborative effort between SLAC and LBL, Perl became known for his individual role in interpreting the data and was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his work in 1995. Drawing upon personal and professional papers from the SLAC Archives and History Office, the LBL Archives and Records Office, and personal communications from the physicists involved in the discovery, I argue that the discovery of the tau lepton challenges many of the common generalizations regarding the practice of “Big Science.” Big Science has often been associated with a transformation in the life of the experimenter as individual autonomy was subsumed by a ‘factory’ work style typified by teamwork on a massive scale. However, an examination of the discovery of the tau lepton reveals that physicists at SLAC worked in small research groups, enjoyed great scientific freedom, and maintained a direct and interactive role in shaping research. This study also illustrates how scientific ambition motivates decisions underlying priority and discovery, which is highlighted by Perl’s rush to publicize his findings in order to establish priority.
