In this study, we explored the relationships among gender, age, daily stressors, positive and negative affect, and neuroticism on cortisol outcomes in older men and women. We were particularly interested in whether variation in positive affect would have an effect on variation in negative affect and if this relationship would mediate the stress process. Further, we were interested in whether women would have lower cortisol outcomes as a result of this process. The participants in this study included 96 men (mean age = 79) and 65 of their wives (mean age = 75) who took part in an at-home 8- day daily diary study as part of the Normative Aging Study (NAS). This study uses data collected on four of those days in which participants provided 4 measures of salivary cortisol that we matched with a NAS version of the Daily Inventory of Stressful Events (DISE; Almeida, Wethington, & Kessler, 2002), PANAS (Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988), and a 2007 assessment of neuroticism (Goldberg, 1992). Bivariate, regression, and three-level MLM-mediated-moderated analyses indicated that age had a significant effect on negative affect reports, but only for women, such that women had a downward slope in negative affect as age became higher. The rest of the analyses indicated that men and women were more alike than different in later life, although neuroticism, age, and stress had some notable main effects on affect and cortisol outcomes. These results enhance our understanding of the complex relationship between psychosocial effects and physiological stress responses in an age range rarely studied in the stress and resilience literature.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Visibility and Vulnerability: Deconstructing Representations of Rape in the Context of War in Democratic Republic of the Congo Author: Silvestri, Frankie Year: 2017 My work explores protracted conflict in DR Congo representationally, considering ways in which conflict is thematized in Western media around sexual violence. I use content and text mining to think through the role of framing in media, and conduct discourse analysis tracing how rape in the context of war has become instrumentalized by Western media to make sense of and justify interventions in the conflict in DR Congo. Specifically I examine forty-two articles published in diverse sources containing the phrase "rape capital of the world" to uncover links between violence, gender, and power. This thesis is generally situated within a postmodern feminist critique of overemphasis on rape and sexual violence as a universal narrative about women’s lives. My policy recommendation is stop implementing laws singling out rape in the context of war as a unique assault, because they enforce female vulnerability and injurability by representing women as victims/pre-victims of SGBV. It captures women entrepreneurs’ lived experiences and investigates their motivations, the factors affecting their businesses, the challenges they face, and their survival strategies. It also explores entrepreneurship's impacts on women’s lives, particularly affecting their ascribed gender roles and contributions to social transformation. The findings of this research, based on qualitative interviews with 19 female entrepreneurs in Afghanistan, suggest that female entrepreneurship could be an effective way of involving women in social and economic development. This thesis also contributes to women’s empowerment and increases job opportunities for other women. It also has the potential to address women’s previously unmet needs. I argue that in conservative societies, entrepreneurship brings about social change by normalizing women’s presence in the public sphere, particularly in business, and therefore it should be supported and promoted.
