Year: 1992 The activities of the Hot Dry Rock Program at Los Alamos are reported in two volumes this year. This volume, in accordance with guidelines provided by the USDOE Geothermal Technology Division, reports our work in an objective/accomplishments format which stresses the relationship of our activities and accomplishments to the program objectives. Because it is designed to serve as a stand-alone document, some sections from previous reports are repeated herein for completeness with little change from previous years. This volume is intended to serve both as a functional report to HDR Program management personnel at the DOE and the Laboratory, and as a useful general reference document to provide a view of the status and accomplishments of the HDR program as of the close of FY91. The companion volume to this report is a compendium of scientific and technical publications of the project staff during Fiscal Year 1991. These test loops are suited for determining critical fluid properties such as phase separation, liquid and gas composition as a function of thermodynamic conditions, scaling tendency, etc. They also have been used to study the effects of chemical alteration of the fluid with acid or scale inhibitor addition in order to avoid scale formation. The loops are easy to construct and handle. Their operation does not interfere with other test work being performed to evaluate additional well and reservoir properties. They are well suited for gathering information about the fluid properties at the very earliest stages of field development. Well log analysis as applied to the geothermal industry is one of the areas of technology in great need of further development. One means of improving log analysis technology is to study case histories of the past uses of log analysis as applied to specific fields. The project described in this report involved case history studies on two well-known geothermal areas in North America: The East Mesa field in California and the Cerro Prieto field in Mexico. Year: 1977 A basic modular exploration sequence which includes a carefully balanced selection of geological, geochemical, and geophysical modules is developed for geothermal prospecting in the eastern Basin and Range. The cost per square mile for application of this exploration architecture is $461.00. If one were to expand this basic system to include virtually all techniques being routinely employed in geothermal prospecting today, then the cost per square mile would increase to $790.00. This latter expenditure rate is difficult to justify, but some increase above the $461.00 basic cost appears to be warranted to make exploration costs about equal to land acquisition costs and model-test drilling costs. Total costs per discovery appear to range from $6M to $27M depending upon assumptions, when the costs of exploring for ''dry'' prospects are included in the costs of the discoveries. Development and operating costs are not included in the analysis. The basic exploration architecture described here is compared with others previously advanced in the literature.
