Preliminary results and progress reports for the period up through mid-1980 have already been released as a Division Open File Report (Korosec, Schuster, and others, 1981). Although operational decisions normally dictate the practicality of drilling, the characteristics, we must first understand how unique various surface or shallow subsurface data are in assessing the nature of the resource. The following progress report summarizes the results of numerical simulations of heat and mass transport around igneous plutons and the synthesis of geologic data. To date, the results of the study describe the transient nature of thermal resources and the ambiguities which must be accounted for in using current technology to assess the nation's geothermal resources. Year: 1983 The Wind River Valley, on the west slope of the Cascade Range, is a northwest-trending drainage that joins the Columbia River near Carson, Washington. The region has been heavily dissected by fluvial and glacial erosion. Ridges have sharp crests and deep subsidiary valleys typical of a mature topography, with a total relief of as much as 900 m. The region is vegetated by fir and hemlock, as Well as dense, brushy ground-cover and undergrowth. The lower 8 km of the valley is privately owned and moderately populated. The upper reaches lies within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and include several campgrounds and day parks, the Carson National Fish Hatchery, and the Wind River Ranger Station and Wind River Nursery of the US Forest Service. Logging activity is light due to the rugged terrain, and consequently, most valley slopes are not accessible by vehicle. The realization that a potential for significant geothermal resources exists in the Wind River area was brought about by earlier exploration activities. Geologic mapping and interpretation was needed to facilitate further exploration of the resource by providing a knowledge of possible geologic controls on the geothermal system. To improve the local job market, an effort is underway to enhance the competitive position of the local commerce and industry. This effort is directed at the development of local geothermal resources in the form of an energy utility system to furnish low-cost energy to its job-intensive industry. The Susanville Geothermal Energy Project (SGEP) encompasses the research and development for the energy system. A team composed of key citizens, elected officials, city management, and industry has developed the project since late 1973. The Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) has contracted for a research program to define the economics of a community building an economic base through the utilization of geothermal energy. The ERDA effort will define the economic model, specific energy systems, and a program plan for the development of a demonstration geothermal utility system. Such resources include (1) all products of geothermal processes, embracing indigenous steam, geopressured fluids, hot water, and brines; (2) steam and other gases, hot water and hot brines resulting from water, and natural gas or other fluids introduced into geothermal formations; (3) any by-products derived from geothermal resources, such as minerals or gases. By-products must either have a value less than 75% of the value of the geothermal resources from which they are derived or must not be of sufficient value alone to warrant extraction and production. in order to encourage the development of geothermal resources, ERDA conducts a program to assess those resources and to establish the technical, economic, and environmental acceptability of geothermal technologies. This program includes some proposed actions that could affect the environment. As a means of obtaining information essential to satisfying the requirements of NEAP and its own regulations (10 CFR Part 711), ERDA requests that certain participants in the agency's programmatic activities submit an environmental report. The report describes the proposed programmatic activities and considers the potential impacts of those activities with respect to the existing environment.
