Year: 2015 The Oregon Lake Watch (OLW) volunteer monitoring program is now in its second year of operation, continuing its focus on early detection of aquatic invasive species (AIS), with a secondary focus on lake water quality. The aquatic invasive species chosen as Watch List priorities for the OLW are based on the Oregon Department of Agriculture’s Noxious Weed List (Oregon Department of Agriculture Noxious Weed Control Program 2014) as well as professional judgement (more information can be found in Oregon Lake Watch Final Report 2014). This report summarizes the data collected by 15 of 24 OLW volunteers over 2014, across 110 sampling events and 20 Oregon lakes. Data collected by trained volunteers includes sightings of both native and aquatic invasive plants and animals, as well as recordings of lake temperature profiles, and Secchi depth, a measure of clarity. Of the 16 original water bodies surveyed in OLW’s first year (2013), 12 were surveyed again in 2014, and 8 are new waterbodies. Long-term monitoring of these lakes provides valuable information over time, and expanding the number of lakes monitored, especially in the case of monitoring for invasive species, means that more potentially harmful invasions can be stopped sooner. Ideally, the OLW will continue to monitor these current lakes, and expand their volunteer network to cover more waterbodies across Oregon as this program continues to grow. AIS surveys emphasized the detection of Watch List aquatic plant and species that can have a negative impacts on the beneficial uses of our waterbodies. Water transparency and temperature measurements were used to track the condition of volunteers' lakes. Thirty-one Oregon lakes have been surveyed during the OLW’s three years, 16 of which were surveyed during 2015. Seven lakes have been surveyed all three years and seven more have been surveyed two of the three years. Four Watch List plant and one animal species were found during 2015. Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) was found in three lakes, Brazilian elodea (Egeria densa) and curly leaf pondweed (Potamogeton crispus) were each found in two lakes, and yellow flag iris (Iris pseudacorus) was found in one lake. Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) were found in one lake. A diverse array of native plants were found along with native signal crayfish (Pacifasticus leniusculus). Water quality ranged from eutrophic to oligotrophic conditions based on water transparency and water temperatures ranged as high as 28°C (82°F). However, invasive aquatic plants are also capable of causing severe impacts and may similarly be transferred between waterbodies on boats, trailers or other equipment. Heavy infestations can hinder recreational use by motorized and non-motorized boats, snag fishing lines, threaten the safety of swimmers and water-skiers, restrict delivery of irrigation water or quality of drinking water, and negatively impact aquatic habitats used by wildlife. One such plant, Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum), is wide-spread in much of the United States, but has only recently been found in four waterbodies in central Oregon’s Deschutes and Jefferson counties. This plant and many other macrophytes are capable of surviving when fragments or seed are carried to new waterbodies by natural or human-mediated means. While certain natural vectors like water currents and birds cannot be controlled, a containment strategy aimed at reducing secondary spread of EWM to new waterways via boat traffic would benefit aquatic resources in the region. Towards that goal, we examined boat launches at known infested waterbodies to determine: the extent of Eurasian watermilfoil, whether physical control techniques would reduce boaters’ direct encounters with this weed, and general awareness of AIS and support for local control of EWM by lake users. The greatest sampling effort occurred in East Lake, Prineville Reservoir, and Paulina Lake; these water bodies were identified as high risk for both mussel establishment and introduction according to Wells et al. (2009). The sampling effort, however, was fairly uniform amongst the targeted water bodies, and sampling also occurred in Upper Klamath Lake, Howard Prairie Lake, Hyatt Reservoir, Emigrant Lake, Ochoco Reservoir, and Lake Billy Chinook. Non-native invertebrates and macrophytes were opportunistically collected during Dreissena spp. sampling in 2013.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: 2011 Aquatic Weed Surveys in Timothy Lake, Lake Harriet and North Fork Reservoir : final report Author: Sytsma, Mark D., Morgan, Vanessa Howard Year: 2011 Portland General Electric (PGE) was issued a new license by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the continued operation and maintenance of the Clackamas River Hydroelectric Project No. 2195 (Project) on December 21, 2010. This Project is located on both the lower 16 miles of Oak Grove Fork of the Clackamas River (Oak Grove Fork) and the mainstem of the Clackamas River in Clackamas County, Oregon. The effects of relicensing this Project were addressed in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) completed in December 2006 and included the issue of invasive aquatic weed species. The term “aquatic weed” is used here to refer to any non-native aquatic plant species. Surveys of Timothy Lake conducted by Portland State University (PSU) in 1996 and a subsequent survey of Timothy Lake and Lake Harriet in 2004 did not locate any problematic aquatic weed species. However, repeated monitoring is necessary to detect infestations in a timely fashion and, if noxious weeds are present, to allow treatment when weed cover is low and eradication efforts more cost effective. With that aim, PSU conducted aquatic vegetation surveys of Lake Harriet, Timothy Lake, and North Fork Reservoir between August 31 and September 13, 2011. The purpose of these surveys was to detect any populations of aquatic weeds occurring in the lakes while also establishing baseline information reading native aquatic vegetation abundance and distributions in each waterbody. Title: 2011 Aquatic Weed Surveys in Timothy Lake, Lake Harriet and North Fork Reservoir : final report Author: Sytsma, Mark D., Morgan, Vanessa Howard Year: 2011 Portland General Electric (PGE) was issued a new license by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the continued operation and maintenance of the Clackamas River Hydroelectric Project No. 2195 (Project) on December 21, 2010. This Project is located on both the lower 16 miles of Oak Grove Fork of the Clackamas River (Oak Grove Fork) and the mainstem of the Clackamas River in Clackamas County, Oregon. The effects of relicensing this Project were addressed in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) completed in December 2006 and included the issue of invasive aquatic weed species. The term “aquatic weed” is used here to refer to any non-native aquatic plant species. Surveys of Timothy Lake conducted by Portland State University (PSU) in 1996 and a subsequent survey of Timothy Lake and Lake Harriet in 2004 did not locate any problematic aquatic weed species. However, repeated monitoring is necessary to detect infestations in a timely fashion and, if noxious weeds are present, to allow treatment when weed cover is low and eradication efforts more cost effective. With that aim, PSU conducted aquatic vegetation surveys of Lake Harriet, Timothy Lake, and North Fork Reservoir between August 31 and September 13, 2011. The purpose of these surveys was to detect any populations of aquatic weeds occurring in the lakes while also establishing baseline information reading native aquatic vegetation abundance and distributions in each waterbody.
