We quantify phylogenetic clustering and overdispersion of native and non-native fishes of a large river basin in the American Southwest to test for the mechanisms (environmental filtering versus competitive exclusion) and spatial scales influencing community structure. Contrary to expectations, non-native species were phylogenetically clustered and related to natural environmental conditions, whereas native species were not phylogenetically structured, likely reflecting human-related changes to the basin. The species that are most invasive (in terms of ecological impacts) tended to be the most phylogenetically divergent from natives across watersheds, but not within watersheds, supporting the hypothesis that Darwin's naturalization conundrum is driven by the spatial scale. Phylogenetic distinctiveness may facilitate non-native establishment at regional scales, but environmental filtering restricts local membership to closely related species with physiological tolerances for current environments. By contrast, native species may have been phylogenetically clustered in historical times, but species loss from contemporary populations by anthropogenic activities has likely shaped the phylogenetic signal. Our study implies that fundamental mechanisms of community assembly have changed, with fundamental consequences for the biogeography of both native and non-native species. The new program was designed to educate the public about threats of aquatic invasive species (AIS), provide early detection of AIS invasions, and provide long term water quality data for the better management of Oregon’s lakes and reservoirs. Protocols were created for citizen scientists to survey for AIS, collect temperature and water clarity data, and record the data through an online data entry portal. An OLW website was developed to educate about AIS and provide survey protocols and identification materials to volunteers. AIS surveys were focused on Watch List Species which are selected AIS that have a negative impact on the beneficial uses of our waterbodies. Eighteen volunteers were trained during five sessions conducted in western and central Oregon. Fourteen of the trained volunteers collected data from sixteen waterbodies. Six Watch List species and one other AIS species were observed in four of the waterbodies. The three Watch List Species observed in Salish Pond and one in Olallie Lake were new observations. Temperature measurements indicated a wide range of thermal profiles and Secchi transparency measurement indicated a range of trophic status from oligotrophic to eutrophic. The Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the license noted that regular surveys for invasive aquatic weed species would be conducted as part of the Project’s Vegetation Management Plan. The term “aquatic weed” is used here to refer to any non-native aquatic plant species. Information from repeated aquatic surveys will help determine native species distributions and the need for treatment of problematic aquatic weed species, particularly hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata), Brazilian elodea (Egeria densa), and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum). Surveys conducted for PGE by Portland State University (PSU) in Timothy Lake, Lake Harriet, and North Fork Reservoir in 2011 did not locate any problematic submerged or floating leaved aquatic weed species. Year: 2014 Public awareness of aquatic invasive species and proper boat cleaning procedures may prove to be beneficial in reducing the transport and establishment of aquatic invasive species like New Zealand mud snails and zebra and quagga mussels as well as hydrilla and Eurasian watermilfoil. The primary objectives of this research project were to observe the use and determine the efficacy of a public boat wash station as well as increase the public’s awareness of proper boat cleaning procedures and aquatic invasive species. The Tenmile Lakes Basin Partnership, Oregon State Marine Board, and the United States Forest Service (USFS) have undertaken an initiative to increase public awareness of invasive species and proper cleaning procedures by building a boat wash station at the Tenmile Lake public boat launch. In the summer of 2012, 199 qualitative human subject surveys were administered at Tenmile Lake in Lakeside, Oregon to boaters on their boating habits and knowledge of invasive species prior to building the boat wash (“pre-boat wash”). An extension of the 2012 study was conducted in the summer of 2013 on 200 boaters after the completion of the Tenmile Lake boat wash station (“post-boat wash”). Comparisons were made on the observations and answers of boaters prior to and after the boat wash installation. Of the boaters surveyed in the pre-boat wash field season, 75.9% of boaters claimed they would use a boat wash station at Tenmile Lake. The actual use of the boat wash station based on observations made by the field researcher during the post-boat wash field season indicated only 38.5% of surveyed boaters used the station. Furthermore, more than 20% of boaters could not verbally identify an invasive species in either field season when asked their awareness of aquatic invasive species. However, the majority of boaters surveyed at Tenmile Lake in the pre-boat wash field season (63.3%) and post-boat wash field season (66%) were aware of the phrase “Clean, Drain, Dry”. These results identify a disconnect in what boaters say and what boaters do and the knowledge gaps boaters have on aquatic invasive species, but these results also identify a growing awareness of proper boat cleaning procedures. Year: 2013 The New Zealand mud snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum; NZMS) is an invasive species found in a variety of ecosystems in Oregon, including brackish estuaries, heavily used recreational rivers, and highly trafficked coastal freshwater lakes. NZMS are an invasive species of concern because once established, they may out-compete native invertebrate grazers, such as native insect larvae that provide important food resources for fish, and NZMS themselves provide little nutritional value. Monitoring for the presence and population density of NZMS was performed at boat ramps located along several water bodies in 2006 – 2007. These water bodies were then re-sampled during the summer of 2012 and winter of 2013 to investigate changes in population densities, as well as the potential spread of NZMS. In addition, six brackish estuaries and six freshwater coastal lakes were sampled in the summer of 2013 once again for population densities but also for stable isotope analysis to better understand the influence NZMS may have on these different ecosystem food webs. This work addresses how NZMS densities differ across invaded sites, how densities vary over time, how community diversity in rivers and estuaries varies between sites and over time, whether there is a correlation between NZMS densities and invertebrate diversity, and whether NZMS density correlates with decreasing dietary specificity for competing benthic invertebrates. Samples were sorted, identified, and counted, and stable isotope analyses from the summer 2013 field season were conducted on macroinvertebrates, zooplankton, and primary producers at the UC Davis Stable Isotope Facility. NZMS densities were found to be dynamic, with population densities increasing and decreasing over time and space. Additionally, two waterbodies (the lower Siuslaw River and the Nestucca River Estuary) previously without reported NZMS presence were identified to have established NZMS populations. Across invaded sites during the 2006 and 2012 sampling periods, there was a strong negative correlation between NZMS density and the diversity of the benthic invertebrate community. Within sites, no significant correlation was detected. High NZMS population densities were found to have a significantly negative relationship with detritivore density populations in the freshwater lake sites sampled in the summer of 2013. There were no significant relationships between NZMS and the density of any particular macroinvertebrate feeding habit group in estuaries. Additionally, stable isotope analyses indicated that NZMS at high population densities in the freshwater lakes share a similar stable isotope signature with macroinvertebrate herbivores, but NZMS had a more specific or narrow dietary range suggesting macroinvertebrate herbivores had more generalized diets than NZMS when at high densities. Conversely, NZMS population densities in the brackish estuary ecosystems showed no discernable patterns from the stable isotope analyses to indicate that their presence, either at high or low density, had an effect on the estuarine food webs. We concluded that continued research on long term population dynamics of invasive species like NZMS and their effects on native food webs remain crucial to future management and mitigation. Human alteration of landscapes may dramatically affect the ecology of neighboring aquatic systems. It was hypothesized that lotic amphibians would be negatively associated with greater amounts of landscape development and positively associated with forested area within the surrounding watershed. Thirty-seven 1st-3rd order streams were sampled between June 21st and September 21st in 2011. Streams potentially providing adequate habitat for stream-obligate amphibians were randomly selected. Amphibians were surveyed along 30-meter stream transects using an active-cover search (ACS). Environmental variables associated with development in surrounding landscapes were measured in situ. GIS delineation was conducted to define landscape-scale variables at stratified distances from riparian networks up-stream of each site via the utilization of the 2006 NLCD dataset and a finer-scale, regional dataset compiled by the Institute for Natural Resources (INR). Amphibians were detected at seventeen of the thirty-seven sampled streams. The most commonly detected species were Dicamptadon tenebrosus, Plethadon vehiculum and Plethadon dunni. Streams where amphibians were observed had lower average water temperature and conductivity, coarser stream substrate and were located on public property more often than streams where no amphibians were detected. Landscape variables were most significant to amphibians within 100 and 200 meters of the upstream stream network. Occupancy of a site by facultative species was best explained by the proportion of mixed forest in the surrounding watershed (R2=0.343, p<0.001). Occupancy of a stream by obligate species was best predicted by measurements of water quality and in-stream cover (Water Temperature: R2=0.275, p<0.001; Water Conductivity: R2=0.248, p<0.001; Cover: R2=0.323, p<0.001). Occupancy of stream refugia by all observed amphibians was positively influenced by higher percentages of forest cover and lower percentages of urban development and herbaceous vegetation in the surrounding watershed. Results of this study indicate that urban refugia must contain adequate riparian forest area, coarse stream substrate and clean, cool water to sustain stream-amphibian communities. Under the Clean Water Act, resource managers such as the Washington Department of Ecology, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and tribes are responsible for restoring and protecting the integrity of these waters. Targets for restoration or criteria for impairment are not well defined, however, and may naturally vary by geology, hydrology, morphometry, and climate. One way to determine whether lakes are impaired and to identify restoration targets is to assess lake reference conditions (EPA 2000). Reference conditions are the water quality conditions that would exist in the absence of anthropogenic perturbation. Reference conditions are not nutrient criteria but can be useful in establishing realistic criteria that reflect natural regional variations in water quality. The EPA suggests three general approaches for assessing reference conditions (EPA 2000): Observation of reference lake or entire lake population distributions Paleolimnological reconstruction of past conditions. Estimation of past conditions from mass balance nutrient loading models, morphoedaphic index models, or other mathematical models. The lake population distribution approach involves observing data from either a set of lakes that are relatively unimpacted or from a random selection of all lakes in a region. The lower percentile of each population distribution is assumed to represent reference conditions. The lower 75th percentile of the relatively unimpacted population distribution has been used as a cutoff for reference conditions while the 25th percentile has been used for the lake population distribution as a whole. The Washington Department of Ecology has used this approach to develop phosphorus criteria (Moore and Hicks 2004). This approach assumes that the percentiles in a distribution represent reference conditions. Paleolimnological models are based on the observation that sediments continually incorporate information from the overlying water column and that sediment cores provide a history of past conditions. Sedimented diatom-based water quality reconstructions are based on two main observations (Hall and Smol 1992): (1) individual diatom species have restricted nutrient requirements and are sensitive indicators of lake trophic status, and (2) the cell walls of diatoms are abundant and well preserved in most lake sediments and can usually be identified to a specific or subspecific level. Weighted-averaging and calibration statistical models have been used to relate sediment surface diatom assemblages to contemporary water quality parameters. These speciesenvironment relationships, known as transfer functions, can then be used to infer past water quality conditions from diatom remains preserved deep in sediments. This approach has been successfully applied in several geographic regions including the northeastern United States (Dixit et al. 1999), Minnesota (Ramstack et al. 2003), and British Columbia (Reavie et al. 1995). The morphoedaphic index (MEI) was originally developed to predict fisheries yield in lakes based on lake morphometry and alkalinity or conductivity (Ryder 1965). Vighi and Chiaudani (1985) suggested the utility of the index for inferring natural background phosphorus levels in lakes. Their major assumption was that human activities have not altered lake morphometry and ionic strength to the degree that the same activities have increased nutrient loading. While the model is simple, it has been successfully used in to infer background phosphorus concentration in Midwest lakes (Ramstack et al. 2003). We used the MEI and the sedimented diatom total phosphorus inference models to assess lake reference conditions for Puget Lowlands and Northern Willamette Valley Ecoregion Lakes.
