Samples were collected in Spain, into a nationwide study about knowledge and assessments about aquaculture, funded by the General Secretary of Marine Fisheries of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. An average 2,500 different consumers were interviewed each year in the period from 2005 and 2007. Respondents had to answer to two open questions indicating fish species that are being cultured and which of them they do consume. The evoked set was formed with the most repeated species reported by consumers. The factors are classified into demographic and consumption habits. Their influence on the occurrences of cultured species into an evoked set is tested using binary logistic regression models. Four equations, corresponding to the main fish-farmed species in Spain, are fitted with every sample for both known and consumed species. Results indicate that the occurrence of one species into the evoked set is related with education level, place of consumption, perceptions and consumption of other farmed species. The impact of structural change in the fishery, as a result of the introduction of the quota system, on the prices of quota species is also examined, and it is observed that the quota management system has significantly affected the price of twelve out of the sixteen species. We use simulations from a size-spectrum ecosystem model to investigate the ecosystem externality created by fishing of multiple species. The model is based upon general ecological principles and is calibrated to the North Sea. Two fleets are considered: a `forage fish’ fleet targeting species that mature at small sizes and a `large fish’ fleet targeting large piscivorous species. Based on the marginal analysis of the present value of the rent, we develop a benefit indicator that explicitly divides the consequences of fishing into internal and external benefits. This analysis demonstrates that the forage fish fleet has a notable economic impact on the large fish fleet, but the reverse is not true. The impact can be either negative or positive, which entails that for optimal economic exploitation, the forage fishery has to be adjusted according to the large fish fishery. With the present large fish fishery in the North Sea, the two fisheries are well adjusted; however, the present combined exploration level is too high to achieve optimal economic rents.   Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Simulation Model Evaluation of Some Fisheries Balance Indicators Author: Scott, Robert, Sampson, David Chronic overcapacity has been identified as a major cause of the overfishing of Europe’s fish stocks and the poor economic performance of the European fishing fleets. Mechanisms are needed to ensure that the capacity of European fishing fleets remain proportionate to available fish stocks. To that end, the European Commission developed “Guidelines for an improved analysis of the balance between fishing capacity and fishing opportunities”, which specify a minimum set of fleet-based technical, biological, economic, and social indicators that purportedly measure the balance between fishing fleets and fish resources. A bioeconomic simulation model was developed to assist in the evaluation of some of these balance indicators. The model is age-structured, like standard single-species stock assessment models, but accommodates multiple independent fish stocks that are harvested by multiple independent fishing fleets. The fish stocks occupy multiple spatial regions with diffusion of fish between regions. The fishing fleets choose where and how to fish based on anticipated profits. Randomness is included in the simulated system in the annual fish recruitments and their spatial distribution. The model was used to generate a series of balance indicators that were then compared against the true conditions in the simulated fisheries to evaluate whether the indicators provide accurate signals of system status. The simulations showed that randomness in recruitment propagates directly into randomness in the balance indicators implying that it will be difficult to detect meaningful signals from any short time series of balance indicator values.
