Year: 2001 The economics literature has recently turned its attention to the existence of gender differences in various aspects of choice behaviour. This paper focuses upon such differences as may exist in the valuation of environmental resources. Firstly, the paper presents several reasons why women are expected to have a lower willingness-to-pay (WTP) for environmental improvements than do men. Secondly, in order to establish the empirical extent of gender differences the paper presents a model for estimating individual-specific benefits from environmental improvements. CVM referenda data from are collected and used in a double-bounded probit model to estimate female versus male WTP for remedial actions designed to improve three different water-based recreational activities in a previously highly polluted area. For these data, the paper finds that, even after controlling for income differences, women consistently have lower WTP values. The findings in this paper have potentially important consequences for the subsequent calculation of aggregate benefits from contingent valuation models that ignore the role of gender. Since women generally constitute about one half of a population base, turning a blind eye to gender means that aggregate WTP values will overstate the extent of benefits from environmental improvements. This paper enlightens women on the different stages of production in aquaculture that they could be involved in, as fishers for home consumption, they contribute significantly to the nutritional needs of their families. The idea is to empower the women with modern technologies in aquaculture to generate enough revenue to sustain their families and save the society from menace of fish scarcity. When women are involved in aquaculture production, it will go a long way in achieving the millennium development goals of eradicating extreme poverty, hunger and empowering women in Nigeria. It analyses the opportunities to increase social and economic benefits for poorer groups and to establish a more gender sensitive approach to eco labelling through the implementation of upgrading strategies addressing equity gaps. It will describe the octopus value chain and give details on how the introduction of certification, such as an eco- or ethical fish label, may affect different actors in the chain and their ability to capture benefits. Over the past few years there has been a large increase in the interest for eco- and fair trade labelled produce, and there is increasing interest both by the fisheries themselves to gain market access and by international buyers who are keen to protect their reputation on responsible sourcing. While there are a number of potential benefits of certification including a promotion of sustainable fisheries management and increased investment in development, there are also a number of challenges, potential unintended consequences and social and economic elements that will not be addressed by certification. For instance, octopus certification is constrained by the limited number of countries exported to and the interest of buyers to produce certified and ethical labelled octopus. This research provides an analysis of the key issues in Senegal related to the proposed octopus certification. It also proposes responses to encourage a pro-poor and gender sensitive approach through supporting upgrading strategies that will be explored within the ongoing project. The analysis resulted in three segments: the unconcerned, the wild fish concerned and the ambivalent. These represented 27%, 35% and 39% of the sample respectively. The segments were profiled with variables age, gender, education, social class, fish consumption, attitudes towards fish, attitudes towards farmed fish, perceived knowledge about fish farming, health involvement and the type of information used when buying fish (product vs. environmental).
