Samples were collected in Spain, into a nationwide study about knowledge and assessments about aquaculture, funded by the General Secretary of Marine Fisheries of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. An average 2,500 different consumers were interviewed each year in the period from 2005 and 2007. Respondents had to answer to two open questions indicating fish species that are being cultured and which of them they do consume. The evoked set was formed with the most repeated species reported by consumers. The factors are classified into demographic and consumption habits. Their influence on the occurrences of cultured species into an evoked set is tested using binary logistic regression models. Four equations, corresponding to the main fish-farmed species in Spain, are fitted with every sample for both known and consumed species. Results indicate that the occurrence of one species into the evoked set is related with education level, place of consumption, perceptions and consumption of other farmed species. The model is based upon general ecological principles and is calibrated to the North Sea. Two fleets are considered: a `forage fish’ fleet targeting species that mature at small sizes and a `large fish’ fleet targeting large piscivorous species. Based on the marginal analysis of the present value of the rent, we develop a benefit indicator that explicitly divides the consequences of fishing into internal and external benefits. This analysis demonstrates that the forage fish fleet has a notable economic impact on the large fish fleet, but the reverse is not true. The impact can be either negative or positive, which entails that for optimal economic exploitation, the forage fishery has to be adjusted according to the large fish fishery. Mechanisms are needed to ensure that the capacity of European fishing fleets remain proportionate to available fish stocks. To that end, the European Commission developed “Guidelines for an improved analysis of the balance between fishing capacity and fishing opportunities”, which specify a minimum set of fleet-based technical, biological, economic, and social indicators that purportedly measure the balance between fishing fleets and fish resources. A bioeconomic simulation model was developed to assist in the evaluation of some of these balance indicators. The model is age-structured, like standard single-species stock assessment models, but accommodates multiple independent fish stocks that are harvested by multiple independent fishing fleets. The fish stocks occupy multiple spatial regions with diffusion of fish between regions. The fishing fleets choose where and how to fish based on anticipated profits. Randomness is included in the simulated system in the annual fish recruitments and their spatial distribution. The model was used to generate a series of balance indicators that were then compared against the true conditions in the simulated fisheries to evaluate whether the indicators provide accurate signals of system status. The simulations showed that randomness in recruitment propagates directly into randomness in the balance indicators implying that it will be difficult to detect meaningful signals from any short time series of balance indicator values. The Spanish fleet involved in the Celtic Sea fishing grounds, also known as the _300 fleet_, as when Spain joined the EEC it was made up of this number of vessels, presently has 199 vessels (the 70% of them operate from Galicia).This fleet mainly catches hake (merlucius merlucius), anglerfish (Lophius piscatorius and Lophius budegassa), horse mackerel (trauchurus trauchurus), megrim (Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis) and nephrops. Although it is currently possible to associate specific target species with particular fleets, various quantities of hake, anglerfish, megrim and nephrops are taken together, depending on the gear type. A supply function for each species has been estimated as an expression that depends on the price of fish, price of other fish landed by the fleet and the fuel price. The preliminary results indicate that the supply of some species is more elastic regarding the fluctuations in fuel prices than other ones. It could explain the strategy of the fleet for selecting the less elastic stocks to the fuel costs. There is overwhelming scientific agreement on the threats that this invasion poses to a wide range of native species, including grunts, snappers, and groupers. Because eradication of lionfish is unfeasible, scientists and conservationists are urging the implementation of lionfish management plans in order to reduce the environmental and economic impacts of the invasion to a manageable scale. Recent studies indicate that persistent removal of lionfish by spearheading does help control lionfish populations and help native fishing rebound. Through mathematical modeling and field tests, researchers have found that reducing lionfish stocks by about 75 to 90 percent leads to the rapid recovery of native fish numbers (Green et al. 2014). Data on prey fish and lionfish densities as well as spearheading catch rates were collected from lionfish derbies held at the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve, Belize, in 2014. These data were used to estimate reef-specific target lionfish densities leading to the recovery of native prey species in the marine reserve as predicted by the Green et al. (2014) model. The fishing costs involved in reaching the target densities were also estimated to evaluate the overall effectiveness of manual removal techniques as a management strategy for invasive lionfish stocks. A systematic decrease in fishery yields and the designation of several species as overfished on the west coast of the United States have resulted in stricter protocols regarding sustainable fisheries management and the rebuilding of overfished stocks, including the need to set annual harvest limits for all exploited species. An alternative and simpler approach to stock assessment which could address this need is described and an evaluation framework set up. Although no results have been obtained to date, possible costs and benefits of incorporating this approach into fisheries management are discussed. Author: Harte, Michael, Heppell, Selina, Sylvia, Gil, Cusack, Christopher, Larkin, Sherry Stock assessment techniques currently used in the United States are extremely costly to implement, involve significant data requirements, and are inaccessible to all but a few stock assessment scientists. A systematic decrease in fishery yields and the designation of several species as overfished on the west coast of the United States have resulted in stricter protocols regarding sustainable fisheries management and the rebuilding of overfished stocks, including the need to set annual harvest limits for all exploited species. An alternative and simpler approach to stock assessment which could address this need is described and an evaluation framework set up. Although no results have been obtained to date, possible costs and benefits of incorporating this approach into fisheries management are discussed. Close

Species include Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Hepsetus odoe, Hydrocinus spp, Lates niloticus, Clarias gariepinus. Season was significant on weight (p<0.05). Education was significant to willingness to tolerate recreationists (p<0.05), age and fishing experience had significant influence on rendering of assistance to recreationists (p<0.05). Economic and infrastructural development were reasons for desiring recreational fisheries. Willingness to visit was high, activities desired were boat cruising (40%), fishing (23%), swimming 23% and sight seeing (19%). 88.9% showed willingness to pay above NGN500 for entrance, sex was significant on amount to pay while education was significant on time of visit. The relative abundance of game species is equivalent to the required 1:3 ratio recommended for carnivore/forage ratio in angling ponds. This and the positive disposition of resource users and the willingness to pay are strong indications of success. The goal of the survey was to provide estimates of the fishable biomass of principal demersal, small pelagic and mesopelagic fish species off the Arabian Sea coast of Oman for ongoing stock assessment of Omani fisheries, to guide development and investment decisions. The MFW is now engaging in the development of a coastal fishing fleet and the assessment of the most appropriate management approach for this fishery. The MFW‟s view is that the resource potential within the country‟s territorial waters (as indicated by the recent fisheries resource assessment survey), limited harvesting capacity, extent of technological advancement, and economic performance of the current traditional fleet, indicates that the current level of exploitation of fish resources is not optimal. Regulations were not enough to avoid excess fishing and entry of non-authorized boats, driving the stock to a low level. We developed a spatial and density dependent bioeconomic model which calculates an optimum pathway to maximize the profits without putting the stock in peril. The model operates seasonally in the short-run. Because of catchability and cost depend on the sea cucumbers densities, both were modeled with asymptotic functions. In order to avoid the Allee effect, the species requires a minimum density of 0.1 individuals per square meter. Our results indicate that the maximum quota could be 5,700 tons, which is about 32% of the vulnerable biomass. This quota would produce profits of US$2,300,000. If minimum density were neglected, the system would lead the biomass to 8,400 tons, instead 11,000 tons, with extra profits of US$76,000; however, in such level the density would be 0.08 individual per square meter, reaching the Allee effect and impeding the stock recovery. But more processed and expensive product forms that are distributed through modern distribution channels have increased their market share during the data period. We employ a panel data set on monthly per capita demand for different herring products in six Russian regions, from unprocessed to value added products, to test hypotheses on the structure of herring consumption. We estimate dynamic panel data demand systems, with region-specific estimates of price and income elasticities. The six regions in the data set have large differences in average per capita income. Our econometric estimates indicate significant structural regional differences in per capita consumption of different products, also after controlling for income differences. We find that whole herring is generally an inferior good, whereas fillet herring products tend to be normal goods. This suggests that if incomes continue to increase, consumption will shift further from unprocessed to value added herring products. We build upon the green accounting and sustainable development literatures to downscale indices often used to measure sustainability at the nation-state scale to measure the current and projected future sustainability of exploited fishery ecosystems. We argue that the sustainability of a fishery ecosystem can be assessed by whether the properly measured value of the natural, physical and human capital stocks embodied within the fishery (i.e., the comprehensive fishery wealth) is non-decreasing over time. We extend our published work (Fenichel and Abbott 2014) to show how ecosystem models of fisheries can be integrated with bioeconomic models of human “predators’” responses to changes in multispecies fish stocks and policy to provide rigorous “shadow prices” for all species within the system and fishing capital. These prices can then be multiplied by their associated capital stocks to provide an index of inclusive fishery wealth. Changes in this index (i.e., comprehensive investment) allow managers to assess the ability of past and current fishery management regimes to maintain wealth within the fishery for future generations. Finally, we show how our wealth accounting approach – when coupled with ecosystem-based bioeconomic models – can be leveraged to prospectively evaluate the sustainability and efficiency of alternative management approaches. From 2008 through 2014, commercial watermen in Virginia were hired during their winter off season to locate, document, and remove derelict gear as part of a larger research effort to determine the biological impacts of marine debris in the Chesapeake Bay. Data on derelict gear removal generated by this research was subsequently paired with spatially resolved catch and effort data and entered into a translog production model used to estimate the economic effects of derelict gear on commercial blue crab production. Model results indicate removal significantly improved pot production and economic profits, a finding which had been previously confounded by concurrent blue crab management action. From 2008 through 2014, commercial watermen in Virginia were hired during their winter off season to locate, document, and remove derelict gear as part of a larger research effort to determine the biological impacts of marine debris in the Chesapeake Bay. Data on derelict gear removal generated by this research was subsequently paired with spatially resolved catch and effort data and entered into a translog production model used to estimate the economic effects of derelict gear on commercial blue crab production. Model results indicate removal significantly improved pot production and economic profits, a finding which had been previously confounded by concurrent blue crab management action. Our research builds on previous work through explicit acknowledgment of important spatial production differences and incorporation of derelict gear removal. Close

Moreover, the country of origin must ensure that each of the salmon stocks achieve or maintain a sustainable size. The economic sub-model is calibrated using commercial fisheries statistics and existing non-market valuation studies. The underlying population dynamics model accounts for 15 salmon stocks and it is used in the actual stock assessment. The results indicate that by considering economic aspects of recreational fisheries it is possible to stabilize the grand coalition. There were no significant differences in cost items between the two States. Empirical analysis showed wide variations in predicted TEs across farms ranging from 48.4% to 77.2% in Ondo State and 45.4% to 82.1% in Ogun State with means of 64.0% and 67.0%, respectively. The results also indicate that coefficients of the quantity of feeds, total number of ponds, labour and number of times pond water is changed were positive and highly significant in catfish production. The inefficiency model revealed that age and farming experience coefficients (significant) and education level coefficient (not significant) were negative indicating that older and more experienced farmers tended to be less inefficient. The test of various null hypotheses showed that the inefficiency effects were related to the age, management pattern, years of experience and education level of farmers. This paper describes the small-scale trawling fisheries in the Mekong Delta using surveyed data from 176 small and near-shore trawling fishers Bentre, Soctrang, Baclieu, Camau and Kiengiang provinces, and compares the differences of major indicators between three main fisher groups: (i) Group 1 - Inside and around Camau National Park, 38 fishers; (ii) Group 2- Near, is that, ≤ 30 km from Camau National Park, 40 fishers, and (iii) Group 3 – Far, is that, > 30 km from Camau National Park, 98 fishers. Better investment for off-shore fishing and more alternatives of better income occupations are important to protect the natural aquatic resources along the coasts of the Mekong Delta, especially Cmau National Park. The sampling unit was the fishery household forming one or several fishing units defined by a métier (an association of a fleet, a main fishing gear, target species): 126 households forming 225 fishing units have been surveyed. The positive impact of the MPA on fishery profitability is shown by a principal component analysis which indicates that there is a lower proportion of fishing units harvesting inside or in adjacent areas of the MPA (insiders who are benefitting from implicit access rights) which face negative profit than those fishing remote from the MPA but in Chumphon Province (outsiders). This positive impact is confirmed by the performance of Chi-square tests: the insiders have relatively higher profit per fishing day than outsiders and Chi-square tests show a greater homogeneity of profits per fishing day and a lower variability for the insiders.
