This study attempted to give empirical backing or refutation to the assertion that dried fish is consumed more than fresh fish in Nigeria. Data used were gathered in 90 rural and urban households selected through multi-stage sampling technique. Analytical tools used included descriptive, Z-test and Chi-square statistics and regression model. Empirical results revealed mean household size of 7 in both households while average annual income was N471,200.04 ($2,908.6) and N326,466.58 ($2015.2) in urban and rural households, respectively. The average quantity of fresh and dried fish consumed per household per year was 13.0kg and 47.0kg in urban, and 11.5kg and 38.0kg in rural households, respectively. There was no significant difference in the consumption of the dried (1.779, p > 0.10,) and fresh (1.904, p > 0.10) fish forms in both households. OLS regression result revealed that household head’s age and numbers of children below 15 years were not significant in influencing consumption (p> 0.10). Contrariwise, household size and fish price significantly negatively influenced quantity of fish consumed while household income exhibited significant positive effect on consumption. The education variable, which was not significant in dried fish consumption, had significant positive influence on fresh fish consumption. However, 50.0% and 27.0% of the respondents rated affordability and accessibility as the main hindrances to consumption. Policy options directed at tackling the high cost of fresh fish to achieve reduced price and increased consumption, were recommended. As a result they are rarely considered as a possible entry point in poverty reduction and rural development planning. Data collected in Democratic Republic of Congo show that this perception may not reflect the empirical reality. Through group and individual household interviews we investigate the dual role of fish as food and cash-crop in this very remote rural area of Congo. The data show that - like in a majority of inland fisheries- fishing is operated seasonally as part of a household-based multiactivity livelihood strategy. Analysis shows that the poorest households rely more heavily on fishing for their supply of protein-rich food, in particular through the fish caught by women. Fishing also appears to be the main source of cash income for the majority of the households, including farmers. In fact households which have the opportunity to engage in fishing often display a higher income than nonfishing households. Based on these findings the paper argues that small-scale fisheries can play a fundamental role in local economy, especially in remote rural areas where they can contribute to strengthen the livelihoods of people through both food security and cash-income generation. This signifies that land leasing market does not facilitate the households having lesser landholding to lease-in land for shrimp culture in the case of traditional shrimp farming whereas in the case of scientific shrimp farming it does facilitate such households. In the case of traditional shrimp farming households‟ association with other fisheries related activities was also found to have positive influence on their leasing-in decisions . On the supply side, variables like number of adult male members, households‟ association with fisheries related activities and non-farm assets were found to have positive, negative and positive association respectively with the extent of land leased-out for traditional shrimp farming. The analysis also exhibits that the age of the household head has negative relationship with the extent of land leased-out by them both in the case of traditional and scientific shrimp farming. This signifies that existing institutional arrangements in shrimp farming of West Bengal are not considerably successful to motivate young rural people to undertake shrimp farming on their own instead of leasing-out land for shrimp culture and aquaculture policies should address this aspect. Our results indicate that average income has increased in both rural and urban areas. For the poorest part of the population, rural areas experienced only modestly and non-significantly reductions in the fraction below basic needs, while urban areas had a substantial reduction. Concerning human capital measured as education for the household head we found substantial improvements in educational level and a simple regression model confirmed the significant impact of education on household income. We also found that households on average are better off when situated close to the lake. The analysis reveals that the labour used (including family labour) for traditional and scientific shrimp farming were 101 mandays per acre and 300 mandays per acre respectively. Both the figures were more than the labour requirement for paddy cultivation in West Bengal. The finding refutes the allegation against shrimp farming as an employment displacing activity as compared paddy cultivation. A comparison of the household income of sample shrimp farmers with the rural poverty line in West Bengal revealed that shrimp farmers of all the categories (small, medium and large) were above the poverty line. However, per capita annual household income of marginal traditional shrimp farmers was quite close to the poverty line which emphasizes the need for pondering special extension facilities to these shrimp farmers. The study also shows that on the whole shrimp farming accounted for about 70% of the annual household income of the sample households. However the importance of shrimp farming was lesser in the case of shrimp farmers with lesser shrimp farm size. This indicates the quest of marginal and small shrimp farmers to diversify their source of income in order to cover the risk associated with shrimp culture. On the whole shrimp farming was proved to be an employment generating activity and had contributed significantly to the income of the sample households. Two components of the socio-economic impact have been prioritized: the fishing unit profitability and the fishery household income distribution by comparing a marine protected area (Mu Ko Chumpon National Park) and an unprotected area (Chumphon Province) in Thailand. One can distinguish three phases: a bibliographical analysis, the carrying out of fishers village monographs and of a sample-based survey of fishery households. The sampling unit was the fishery household forming one or several fishing units defined by a métier (an association of a fleet, a main fishing gear, target species): 126 households forming 225 fishing units have been surveyed. The positive impact of the MPA on fishery profitability is shown by a principal component analysis which indicates that there is a lower proportion of fishing units harvesting inside or in adjacent areas of the MPA (insiders who are benefitting from implicit access rights) which face negative profit than those fishing remote from the MPA but in Chumphon Province (outsiders). This positive impact is confirmed by the performance of Chi-square tests: the insiders have relatively higher profit per fishing day than outsiders and Chi-square tests show a greater homogeneity of profits per fishing day and a lower variability for the insiders. A steady social impact from the MPA on fishery income distribution is revealed by the measure of concentration using an Herfindhal index and Lorenz curves which show the more egalitarian structure of insiders regarding the operating profit and the income per fishery household. The perception of catfish farmers on climate change and it effect on the contribution of catfish production to household income in Lagos State, Nigeria were investigated using primary and secondary data as well as structured questionnaire. A multistage random sampling technique was used to select 250 African catfish farmers. Descriptive statistics, budgeting and production function analysis, Likert scale were used to analyse the data collected. Majority of the African catfish farmers (87.5%) were aware of climate change, over 50% of the respondents noted that the general effect of climate change in their area is fluctuation in rainfall pattern while 16.5% noted that the general effect of climate change is high temperature. Other farmers noted that the effect is less rainfall, drought and excessive rainfall. Catfish farming as an enterprise is profitable with an average profit of ₦205,878.00 (US $1,372.50) per producer in one cropping cycle (8-9) months and it contributed about 55% to household income. The major problem confronting catfish farmers is lack of capital. It is therefore recommended that government should support and encourage commercial, industrial and agricultural banks to provide loans to catfish farming entrepreneurs at low interest rates. Title: African Catfish Farmers` Perception on Climate Change and Contribution of Catfish Production to Household Income in Lagos State, Nigeria Author: Amos, T.T., Adeleke, M.L., Fagbenro, O.A. The perception of catfish farmers on climate change and it effect on the contribution of catfish production to household income in Lagos State, Nigeria were investigated using primary and secondary data as well as structured questionnaire. A multistage random sampling technique was used to select 250 African catfish farmers. Descriptive statistics, budgeting and production function analysis, Likert scale were used to analyse the data collected. Majority of the African catfish farmers (87.5%) were aware of climate change, over 50% of the respondents noted that the general effect of climate change in their area is fluctuation in rainfall pattern while 16.5% noted that the general effect of climate change is high temperature. Other farmers noted that the effect is less rainfall, drought and excessive rainfall. Catfish farming as an enterprise is profitable with an average profit of ₦205,878.00 (US $1,372.50) per producer in one cropping cycle (8-9) months and it contributed about 55% to household income. The major problem confronting catfish farmers is lack of capital. It is therefore recommended that government should support and encourage commercial, industrial and agricultural banks to provide loans to catfish farming entrepreneurs at low interest rates. Close

As a result of estimating demand function by commodity, it was found that a) the income elasticity of demand for all usage is higher than that for household material, for many commodities, and b) tuna, bonito, salmon, left-eye flounder, sea bream, shrimp and crab show positive income elasticity. The analysis of price linkage for tuna, salmon, mackerel and shrimp showed that a) Japanese CIF price correlates with world average FOB price for salmon, implying that the prices are determined simultaneously, and b) there exist a time-lag for domestic price to be transmitted to foreign markets for tuna and frozen shrimp, though the lag is for some months. A Post-Tsunami Rehabilitation Program since year 2005 has been trying to help and support farmers a fund to improve the materials of aquacultural cages and fishing gears. The analyses showed that the quality and quantity of equipment, seeds and feeds invested in aquaculture farms were increased (P<0.01) comparison to pre-recovery period. Importantly, the farm area, growth rate, amount of product and revenue were improved (P<0.05) during the post-tsunami rehabilitation period. Additionally, the area and quality of house, household consumption, household infrastructures, health care and education were also improved (P<0.01). A total of 120 aquaculture farms were sampled. Using gross margin (GM) analysis, the result shows that, all the sampled farms were able to cover their total operating expenses with an average GM > 200,000 naira per annum. The assessed parameters of resource use-efficiency of the farms with stochastic frontier models (SFM) revealed that, elasticities of inputs, such as: pond size, feeds, fingerlings, and other costs were significantly different from zero. While returns to scale of 1.16 obtained from the analysis suggests that, an average farm from the study, exhibits increasing returns to scale. The estimated efficiency score revealed a significant level of inefficiency with an average technical efficiency of about 81%. This suggests that about 19% potential yield are forgone due to inefficiency from the study. The result of sources of technical efficiency shows that; extension, education, stocking density, and credit significantly influenced efficiency of the farms. Similarly, the result of the simulated marginal effects of the inefficiency variables shows that, extension has the highest marginal effects on the efficiency score follows by credit, education, and stocking density. The implications of these findings, therefore, suggest that, aquaculture will provide potential channel of income generation for households in the country considering the size of the profit obtained from the analysis. However, as matter of policy concern, extension with the highest simulated marginal effects on the efficiency score is expected to generate a large increase in the overall performance of the sector if strengthen for sustainable fish production in Nigeria. Non-participants learnt of aquaculture from neighbors or mass media. Total production from ponds in the project area in 1998 was 4.2 times greater than in 1990. Without that project, production would probably have gradually increased 2.8 times. Local fish markets were surveyed in 1991 and 1999. The volume of fish traded increased 8 times. Carp from local ponds now dominate trade. Consequently the real price of carp has fallen, while that of indigenous fish has increased. These participating in the longitudinal survey are interviewed over the twelve months of the survey by telephone using the Kewagama Research respondent facilitation diary methodology. The offsite survey is supported with on-site creel surveys to verify participant responses throughout the duration of the survey. Because the primary focus of the survey is the collection of biological and fishing data, it is not always possible to link economic data to a particular fishing activity, species or fishing site. Resource constraints coupled with absence of fishing and other related infrastructures in most of the fishing villages compel fishermen households to migrate to earn their livelihood. Migrant fishermen formed a new village and follow simple method of fishing, which are eco-friendly, economical in the use of fuel and gears. Their responsible fishing is useful for fishing without any by-catches and wastage of marine resources. With this theoretical background, this paper is framed in such a way to analyze the factors that contribute to the transition of small-scale fisheries to sustainable and responsible fishing in Tamil Nadu, India. Estimation is based on aggregate annual consumption data complied from Taiwan Food Balance Sheets during 1970-1998. The estimated own-price elasticities indicate meat, poultry and seafood are all price inelastic. The results reveal that expenditure effects are strong for meat and fishery fish. The estimated cross-price elasticities are generally small and most products are gross complements. In addition, the effects of household size and the ratio of population aged over 64 on animal products consumption are observed to be significant. The tsunami, giant tidal waves struck on 26th of December 2004 caused severe damage to people and their livelihood. It is now felt that the country should enforce a regulation procedure to manage the coastal zone. This addresses the concept of a set back area in order to mitigate the severity of natural disasters. But, the promulgation of set back area should be account for community perception. Hence, this study was aimed to assess the community perception, possible constraints, and to extract criteria to demarcate a set back area in the littoral. The study was carried out in Galle district, in Southern Sri Lanka, which is one of the districts greatly affected by the tsunami. Three divisional secretariat (DS) divisions viz; Habaraduwa, Hikkaduwa and Galle were selected. Simple random sampling was used to select 120 households. Primary data were gleaned using a pre-tested questionnaire. Informal discussions were held with coastal dwellers, government officers, &etc. The data were analyzed and evaluated to assess the objectives. Accordingly, 54 percent of the community is involved in activities based on fisheries and tourism. The rest 46 percent are engaged in other activities, which are non-stationed in the coastal zone. More than 80 percent households of the area are vulnerable for natural disasters. In consequence, 66 percent were fully damaged and 34 percent were partially damaged. Totally 76 percent of the villagers are willing to have a set back area. But, only 48 percent from 100 m boundary, agreed to have a buffer zone and majority (52%) did not want to leave the place. The reason is that their livelihood activities are adhered to the shore. Further, the buffer zone would reduce the land use efficiency since, it requires 0.25 percent land area. Hence, it is advisable to maintain a buffer zone with a green belt, which is most effective to abate the sea waves. The demarcation of a set back area should consider the geomorphology, natural vegetation cover, &etc. Moreover, government incentives, concessionary loans, permits &etc are tools to promote settlements in inland. Since, the community is in uncertainty and unsecured, willing to have more secured land strip as a buffer zone. Ipso facto, a set back area is a community-blessed concept to mitigate dreadful natural destructions and also to assure the sustainability of the area. Little is known about the way groundfish fishermen are making decisions in response to changes in the fishery. We present results from approximately 60 ethnographic interviews with previously active groundfish fishermen who exited the fishery and current active participants who are considering transitioning out of the fishery. Interviews focused on level of participation in the groundfish fishery, changes since the implementation of catch shares and factors that have influenced decision-making around continued participation or exiting the groundfish fishery. The information collected suggests that adaptation strategies and impacts vary considerably with factors such as the fisherman’s age, initial quota allocation, level of debt, and presence of a second earner in the household. We develop a descriptive theory that characterizes actual choices being made currently by New England fishermen, with the goal of improving the ability to predict responses to future regulatory changes. Decision-making processes appear to differ from typical economic models used to analyze proposed regulatory actions. A richer understanding of these decision-making processes will lead to improved analysis of regulatory impacts. It also carries out many functions: managing people, organizing production, belief life and controlling resources etc. Since changes of traditional social system in Vietnam from three-level institution including Family – Village – State (“in home out village, in village out state”) to a five-level system: State (Central) - Province - District – Commune – Hamlet (village), functions of Van Chai has also been changed. Today, like agricultural villages, Van Chai only play their roles as self-governing unit besides supporting each other among its households in term of non-administrative internal works such as funeral ceremonies, marriage, festivals and so on, other functions such as managing resources go beyond responsibility of Van Chai recently. Today, like agricultural villages, Van Chai only play their roles as self-governing unit besides supporting each other among its households in term of non-administrative internal works such as funeral ceremonies, marriage, festivals and so on, other functions such as managing resources go beyond responsibility of Van Chai recently. These changes do not only affect fishermen’s life in many aspects but also resources protection. In current social circumstances, no one worries when resource is in exhausted. With above idea, the report will mention following contents: 1. Process for formation and development of Van Chai in South Central Coast 2. Functions of Van Chai in South Central Coast in traditional social life + Function as a fishers managing unit + Function as a production unit + Function as a belief unit + Function to control and protect fisheries resources 3. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and the Chi-Square analysis were used to test the study hypotheses at the 0.05 level of significance. Respondents were mostly males (70%) with mean age of 15 ± 2 years. Fishing experience for two-thirds was over 7 years. Major economic activities engaged in by children were fishing (100.0%) and fish marketing (97.8%). All respondents fished more on rivers, lakes, creeks and canals with friends mostly in the mornings (70.0%) between 4-5am (43.3%). Mean daily catch per caput per day amounted in monetary terms to N317. Income increased significantly with age of children (r = 0.27, p< 0.05). Respondents’ major constraint was lack of capital to purchase nets and boats of their own (97.8%). Sustainable involvement of children in artisanal fisheries can help alleviate poverty as the children remitted their incomes to their parents for food, school fees or other school needs. Children’s capacity for production can be boosted through capacity building and greater access to fishing equipment and capital assets used in fishing. Scholarship programmes should be put in place to encourage children who do well at both school and fishing to further develop the quality of future manpower available for fishing in the coastal areas. This study identifies some determinants of job satisfaction and subjective well-being of small scale fish farmers in Vietnam and examines the role of earnings from fish production in generating their happiness. Cumulative logistic models with data from a 2001 survey in Southern Vietnam show that relative income, not absolute income, from aquaculture raises their job satisfaction. Higher satisfaction is also associated with involvement in extension services, a larger relative pond surface and a higher expectation level on earnings from aquaculture. But more processed and expensive product forms that are distributed through modern distribution channels have increased their market share during the data period. We employ a panel data set on monthly per capita demand for different herring products in six Russian regions, from unprocessed to value added products, to test hypotheses on the structure of herring consumption. We estimate dynamic panel data demand systems, with region-specific estimates of price and income elasticities. The six regions in the data set have large differences in average per capita income. Our econometric estimates indicate significant structural regional differences in per capita consumption of different products, also after controlling for income differences. We find that whole herring is generally an inferior good, whereas fillet herring products tend to be normal goods. This suggests that if incomes continue to increase, consumption will shift further from unprocessed to value added herring products. In 2000 we made an inventory among 60 farmers who adopted the rice–fish system in four districts to describe their resources and motivations. In 2006 we repeated this survey among 94 farmers including potential adopters, in order to evaluate the take-up potential of the rice–fish system in the Mekong Delta. Income/person and income/ha of the farm households with a rice–fish system were close to double, while their land area (2.5ha) was not significantly larger than those farms without a rice–fish system (1.95ha). Usually farmers integrating also pigs and fish had the smallest land area. The farmers’ non-adoption of the rice–fish system was mainly due to low availability of capital and land, and to inappropriate location of the field in relation to the homestead, water availability, and agro-ecological conditions. To create space for more upland crops was an important argument for the construction of a rice–fish system.
