The potential for economic development lies there with yellowfin tuna as the most important specie. In this research the efficiency and productivity of the yellowfin tuna value chain in Sri Lanka was studied. The main method emphasis was on interviews with value chain actors (primary data) but secondary data analysis was also used when available. The lack of reliable secondary data from Sri Lanka fisheries made the use of primary data necessary. Interviews were conducted from late 2007 until July 2008. The conclusion is that two different value chains are characteristic for the Sri Lankan yellowfin tuna industry; the domestic market value chain and the export market value chain. The local market is highly regulated and price oriented with low emphasis on quality. The export market is characterized by demand for quality and high prices. It relies heavily on the landings of foreign vessels. Additional emphasis on the export market could increase revenues of the sector but for that structural changes are essential. The local vessels are generally too small and poorly equipped to meet the quality requirements of the export market. For the local fleet there are considerable opportunities for improving quality and reducing costs. Main obstacles are the lack of knowledge and unstructured flow of information between fishermen and processors/exporters, as well as the lack of trust between actors. The traditional net-present-value (NPV) and other discounted-cash-flows (DCF) methods cannot properly capture the management's flexibility and strategic value aspects of a fishery, thus they may understate its value. The rationale for using an option-based approach to capital budgeting arises from its potential to conceptualize and quantify this flexibility, as new information arrives, to alter its operating strategy, to defer investments, to shut down (and restart) fishery development. Real Options valuation has traditionally been applied in the area of natural resource investments different from fishing resources. This paper presents a general bioeconomic model for the value of a fishery. It suffices to determine not only the value of the fishery when open and closed, but also the optimal policy for opening, closing and setting the harvest rate. Moreover, the paper turns to the valuation of a fishery investment opportunity and the optimal investment rule. The natural growth rate of fishing resource stock and the production function are those of the Schaefer model. Finally, results for the Pacific Yellowfin ~l~na are presented. In order to understand how they are able to function side by side and at the same time secure a relatively high value added for the domestic part of the Icelandic value chain of cod, a closer look at the functions and operations of the Icelandic fish markets is needed. In the authors’ recent studies on structural changes in the fisheries value chain in Iceland from 1990 to 2007, six dissimilar main operational strategies were identified. Common to all of those was the need for an efficient use of the Icelandic fish markets. Three distinctive effects of fish markets were identified: firstly, specialisation, where large and small fisheries companies use the fish markets to swap or sell all other species than needed in their specialised production (usually to SMEs producers specializing in those species); secondly, to gain stability in sourcing, where companies source raw material from the fish markets and top-up when there is lack of certain species (or sizes) from the companies’ own boats and; thirdly, the market driven function or effect (market orientated value creation). To study this facilitating and supporting effect of fish markets on the on the progress of the Icelandic fisheries sector further, the focus is now the importance of fish markets from the time of their establishment in Iceland in 1987. The research is based on semi-structured and in-depth interviews with managers of a number of Icelandic fishing and processing companies and is a part of an ongoing research on the value chain structure and on organisational- and productivity changes in the Icelandic fisheries sector. After the salmon are processed and used by the consumers, more emergy values are added directly and indirectly from the fuels and other resources operating the rest of the economy. In the United States, 7 emdollars from the outside economy are attracted to each emdollar of local environmental product. The solar transformity of salmon = emergy/energy = 1.7 x 107 solar emjoules/joule, a high value compared to most fish. In addition, the industry has historically played an important role in providing seafood products for the domestic markets in Cuba. Assistance from the Soviet Union during the 1960-70s led the development of a large distant-water fleet, which produced primarily low-valued seafood products for the domestic markets. The traditional, yet better organized, nearshore fleets continued to produce high-valued species for the export markets. The loss of Soviet assistance in the early 1990s dramatically affected the manner in which the Cuban fishing industry is managed and conducted. The passage of Decreto Ley 164 in 1996 ushered in a number of changes in the management strategies for the Cuban commercial fishing industry. The management of the nearshore fleet, associated service industries, and the processing sector is being conducted in a more decentralized manner, for example, via the creation of autonomous producer associations. This strategy allows much more control by fleet operators over the various harvesting activities. The Cuban fishing fleet now concentrates on the production of high-valued species such as spiny lobster, shrimp, reef fish, tunas, sponges, and others. The prospect of renewed trade with the US has important implications for harvesters, processors, and consumers both in the U.S. and Cuba. The traditional, yet better organized, nearshore fleets continued to produce high-valued species for the export markets. The loss of Soviet assistance in the early 1990s dramatically affected the manner in which the Cuban fishing industry is managed and conducted. The passage of Decreto Ley 164 in 1996 ushered in a number of changes in the management strategies for the Cuban commercial fishing industry. The management of the nearshore fleet, associated service industries, and the processing sector is being conducted in a more decentralized manner, for example, via the creation of autonomous producer associations. This strategy allows much more control by fleet operators over the various harvesting activities. The Cuban fishing fleet now concentrates on the production of high-valued species such as spiny lobster, shrimp, reef fish, tunas, sponges, and others. The prospect of renewed trade with the US has important implications for harvesters, processors, and consumers both in the U.S. and Cuba. Close

The paper provides a means by which compensation for the diminution or loss of native title rights might be estimated on the basis of the opportunity cost of time. Insights are provided into the economic characteristics of the benefits obtained from native title rights and how such rights will affect a community’s budget and the choices available. In particular, the paper shows that, because of the particular relationship Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities have with their estate, and the inclusive nature of community management of the estate, behavioural based methodologies may be applied to the valuation of native title rights to non-use cultural values. This research identifies the optimal harvest schedule for an offshore bluefin tuna farming facility that maximizes the net present value of the operation under a variety of economic, biological and regulatory conditions. Firstly, the paper presents several reasons why women are expected to have a lower willingness-to-pay (WTP) for environmental improvements than do men. Secondly, in order to establish the empirical extent of gender differences the paper presents a model for estimating individual-specific benefits from environmental improvements. CVM referenda data from are collected and used in a double-bounded probit model to estimate female versus male WTP for remedial actions designed to improve three different water-based recreational activities in a previously highly polluted area. For these data, the paper finds that, even after controlling for income differences, women consistently have lower WTP values. The findings in this paper have potentially important consequences for the subsequent calculation of aggregate benefits from contingent valuation models that ignore the role of gender. Since women generally constitute about one half of a population base, turning a blind eye to gender means that aggregate WTP values will overstate the extent of benefits from environmental improvements. Majority of the African catfish farmers (87.5%) were aware of climate change, over 50% of the respondents noted that the general effect of climate change in their area is fluctuation in rainfall pattern while 16.5% noted that the general effect of climate change is high temperature. Other farmers noted that the effect is less rainfall, drought and excessive rainfall. Catfish farming as an enterprise is profitable with an average profit of ₦205,878.00 (US $1,372.50) per producer in one cropping cycle (8-9) months and it contributed about 55% to household income. The major problem confronting catfish farmers is lack of capital. It is therefore recommended that government should support and encourage commercial, industrial and agricultural banks to provide loans to catfish farming entrepreneurs at low interest rates. Multiple linear regression and Cobb-Douglas technique were employed to determine the sustainable yield of the fisheries through the economies of scale in the wet and dry seasons. The multiple linear regression output of the non-mechanized category in monetary terms showed a range of adjusted R 2 values of 0.91 and 0.98 in the two seasons. The F-ratio values were significant at the 0.05 level and highly significant also at the 0.01 level in the two seasons. The respondent categories were unable to combine their cost of operation efficiently from the result of the elasticity. The economies of scale showed that the small-scale fisheries in Lagos State were largely undercapitalized. It was proposed that the Lagos State Government should rejuvenate the defunct subsidy scheme, which on the long run will optimize the catches. This study examined the structural performance of artisanal fish marketing in Ondo State, Nigeria. Data collected from 250 artisanal fish sellers selected using multistage sampling technique were analysed using descriptive statistics, marketing and gross margin, Gini coefficient and Lorenze curve analyses. The results showed that artisanal fish marketing was profitable with a mean net return of N137.10/kg ($0.85/kg). The estimated value of the Gini coefficient determined was 0.64, indicating the presence of inequality in the share of the artisanal fish market in the study area. It was realized that all the respondents in the study area, mentioned poor transport network, high transport cost, inadequate fund and inadequate storage facilities as major problems confronting artisanal fish market in the study area. They believed that anchovy fishing was the main cause of fishery resource depletion in their fishing grounds. Main anchovy fishing gears were light luring falling net, purse seine, and scoop net. All of them are Juvenile bycatch varied from 1.72 – 30.37% of total catches depending on gear type, vessel size, fishing ground, fishing month, and fishing year. Economic losses of juvenile bycatch were $1 – 331/boat/trip. In Songkhla, the crisis problem area, economic losses from light luring falling net were as high as 0.42 – 7.64 times of the return from anchovy. The losses from light luring anchovy purse seine were 23 – 35% of the return from anchovy. The losses from light luring scoop net varied around 2 – 7%. Anchovy catch values in Thailand was $26 million in 1997. Value added from processing was $65 million, mainly from fish sauce. In spite of low value added, 59% of the catches were processed as boiled-dried/dried anchovy mainly for export. 44% of the anchovy value in the importing country were the trade margins, including tax, in importing country. Fishing cost was 20%. This cost estimation did not include the economic loss from juvenile bycatch. Processing and marketing costs in Thailand amounted to 19%. Profit margins for domestic fishermen, processors and traders added up to 17%. Thailand might have been exporting anchovy at an underpaid resource value. The relatively better return from anchovy had led to rapid increase in anchovy fishing effort. If fishing effort exceeded carrying capacity especially in habitats of juvenile economic species, it could lead to decrease in fishing income due to resource depletion not only for artisanal fishermen but anchovy fishermen as well. Recommendations were to determine optimum fishing effort in specific fishing grounds and control the effort. Where there had been overfishing, auction on fishing license and fee on anchovy fishing on the basis of economic loss could be introduced. Coastal community should take part in controlling anchovy fishing effort. Relocation of artisanal fishermen through training and support on initial investment in nonfishing sector was recommended. My model is based on North-East Arctic Cod, which are long lived and for which an abundance of information exists, including proof of FIE. I compare the steady state reached by a `myopic’ fishery manager who sets effort and mesh size policy while ignoring evolution, to one who dynamically optimizes his strategy with the knowledge of how evolution will respond. This paper shows that ignoring evolution may lead to some profit loss, but not likely the `catastrophic’ amount of loss predicted by biologists. While the value of the fishery is somewhat improved when evolution is accounted for, an important auxiliary benefit of accounting for evolution is that the fish stock is healthier, with a larger biomass and a more balanced age-structure. Competitive strategy is believed to exert influence on preferences because strategy defines areas in which the firm has to outperform its competitors. As competitive advantage partly stems from an adaptation of suppliers, strategically important areas translate into criteria for supplier selection. A purchaser’s experience from work within or outside this sector is partly stored as cognitive structures that are used for making decisions and interpretation of information in complex and ambiguous environments. Present use of criteria for selecting suppliers, thus, partly reflects such experiences, in particular what has led to goal achievement in the past. A set of supplier selection criteria was identified based on a literature review and a qualitative prestudy. A set of theory-driven hypotheses are tested using data from a sample of respondents from UK, Spain and France (n = 99). Data were obtained from both traditional coast based importers-wholesalers and regionally based wholesalers. A conjoint approach was used in order to measure relative importance of supplier selection criteria at the individual purchaser level. Various traditional methods are employed to preserve and process Rastrineobola argentea locally known as dagaa (sardines) an indigenous fish species of Lake Victoria. The widely used known customarily dagaa and dagaa products preservation methods include sundrying, smoking, salting and various combinations of these. The advantages of smoking dagaa are manifold. Fish smoking prolong shelf life, enhances flavour and increases acceptability and utilization of dagaa. Customarily traditional dagaa processing techniques used by fishers for example sun drying dagaa direct on the unhygienic sand, rocks and or grasses significantly contribute to poor dagaa products. Awareness of the shortcomings of traditional ovens had stimulated development work on new and improved smoking ovens such as Chorkor oven and Nyegezi models ovens for various reasons. In the light of lessons learned from the constraints and disadvantages associated with earlier smoking techniques, an improved dagaa smoking oven, the modified Altona for hot smoking was introduced. Hot smoking means curing fish by smoking at a temperature of 70-80°C at some stage in the process in order to cook the flesh; hot smoked fish products do not require further cooking before consumption. Unlike other fishes, dagaa are readily available at cheaper price. However, smoked dagaa products have not been promoted in the country wide as well for the region and overseas markets. This may be contributed by the main middlemen traders for sun dried dagaa products who are not willing to opt to trade on smoked dagaa products at domestic markets. Because of the high quality of smoked dagaa compile the hygienic environment for storage and selling. This further enables hygienic handling during trading. The place of origin is an important element when a consumer buys sea food. This report presents a case study of sea urchin purchase in Japan to test the above situation. It focuses on the competitiveness of Japanese marine products of local marine products and brands, because the former is affected by the latter. Before 2002, Japan had been increasing its imports of sea urchins in the face of declining domestic yield. Since then, the import volume has declined, although domestic production remains low. Yet demand for product from Iwate prefecture, Japan’s second largest producer, hasn’t changed. To find out why, we interviewed processors in and around Iwate; had a questionnaire for residents in the prefectural capital, Morioka; analyzed statistics from Morioka’s central wholesale market; and spoke to the market’s auctioneer. The results show that consumers have a lot of attention to product safety, and local people highly assess the value of local product. We presume that a trusted label of origin promotes both brand recognition and a perception of product safety. Using this generalization everything from completely uniformly distributed fish to extreme schooling is taken care of. The classical Beverton-Holt model comes out as a special case of the generalized model. Both the theoretical outline as well as practical numerical examples are provided, and the generalization can be applied both for simulation as well as optimization purposes given appropriate software. Here we apply advanced non-linear programming to maximize the net present value in a bioeconomic setting where the new updating and harvesting functions are used as constraints. This is possible thanks to new software, such as KNITRO, for solving highly nonlinear problems. Applications of this generalized model produce interesting new results. One such practical result is that pulse fishing seems to become less and less economically profitable as we move from uniformly distributed fish to schooling species. The main reason why pulse fishing cease to be optimal in schooling fisheries, is that the economies of scale present in search fisheries gradually disappear when we move from search fisheries to schooling fisheries. This may have important implications for how fish stocks ought to be managed in the future, especially with respect to total allowable catches based on bioeconomic criteria. To avoid catching halibut, trawl fishermen voluntarily developed a rigid grate system and escape panel which are installed ahead of the trawl “codend”. The bycatch reduction device was then formally tested by an industry trade association in conjunction with a National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) fishing gear researcher under an Experimental Fishing Permit in 1998. Results from the experiment showed the device excluded 94% of the halibut while only releasing 38% of the target flatfish. Linear simulations of the fishery were developed to estimate the potential benefit of the grate. Results indicated that fleet-wide use of the grate would result in a 171% increase in the duration of the fishery, a 61% increase in target flatfish catch, and a 71% reduction in overall halibut bycatch. Other simulations demonstrated a high incentive for individual noncompliance. Factors affecting incentives for voluntary or regulatory use of bycatch reduction devices are explored in detail within the context of the highly regulated flatfish fisheries under federal management off Alaska. Now, an advanced version couples the vessel model to selected size-based population models and considers the underlying resource dynamics in the distribution and density patterns of the targeted stocks for the cases of Danish and German vessels harvesting the North Sea and Baltic fish stocks. The stochastic fishing process includes direct and local depletion by stock that is specific to the vessel catching power, which is proportional to the encountered size-based population on the visited ground and is based on stock assessment and research survey data. The impact of the potential fishing effort displacement by vessels on the fish stocks, with resulting fishing mortality, and the vessels’ economic consequences are evaluated on high spatial and seasonal disaggregation levels by simulating different individual choices of vessel speed, fishing grounds and ports. All tested scenarios led to increased overall energy efficiency, except for the fishing closures that increased fuel consumption and costs for most of the vessels due to increased travel distance. On an individual scale, the simulations led to gains and losses due to either the technical interactions between vessels exploiting the same stocks or to the alteration of individual fishing patterns. On the supply side, major technological differences need to be highlighted (such as aquaculture or capture), whereas on the demand side issues involve aggregating products with similar demand parameters, regardless of how produced.
