  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: A Stackelberg Analysis of the Potential for Cooperation in Straddling Stock Fisheries Author: Flaaten, Ola, Long, Le Kim To ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of straddling fish stocks, the 1995 United Nations Fish Stock Agreement calls for the establishment of regional fisheries management organizations to manage such stocks. This paper studies the potential for cooperation in straddling stock fisheries when the cooperative coalition of countries acts as a Stackelberg leader against the remaining singleton countries. It is demonstrated that an increase in the cooperation level leads to an increase not only in the steady-state fish stock, but also in the total rent of the fishery. Further, the outlook for cooperation is better within the Stackelberg game, where the cooperative coalition acts as a leader, than in the Cournot game. At the stable equilibrium of a Stackelberg game, not only is the steady-state fish stock higher, but also the total resource rent, participants’ rent and non-participants’ rent are higher than those of the Cournot–Nash stable equilibrium. The new-entrant issue is also a problem for the conservation of the fish stock in the Stackelberg game. According to the present research, the prospects of cooperation in utilizing a straddling fish stock are not unlikely if the cooperative coalition acts as a leader. This is an important implication for policymakers when discussing an agreement for establishing a regional fisheries management organization (RFMO) to manage a straddling fish stock. The emperical study is based on using the structural equation approach to test construct valitidy of measures and the emperical fit of theoretical model. The results show that the TPB is signficantly applicable to the Vietnam situation. The 23% of the variation of eating fish frequency is signficantly explained by motivation and perceived behavioral control. The motivation to consume fish as measured by intention is signficantly determined by subjective norms and attitude toward fish as meal; the two constructs explained for 35% of the motivation variation. At the specific level, the study found that negative affect, perceived quality and price are significant indicators that explains for 60% of the variation of the attitude construct; perceived price, time using to cook and prepare fish as meal and availability of fresh fish are important factors explaining for 63% of the variation of the perceived control over fish consumption. As one of the first attempts, the study provide some managerial suggestions for seafood sector to expand the domestic markets and also raise some recomendations for future research. The analysis characterised fishing businesses based on scale of operation, type of fishery accessed, degree of specialisation and geographical location of fishing business base. Each group had differing levels of economic performance: at least half of the surveyed fleet were not covering all of their economic costs. Fishers were asked their view on a range of issues effecting their economic performance and were pessimistic about the viability of the fishing industry and their future. The government has promoted freshwater fish culture mainly to supply domestically. The development policies that influence markets and access have been stated. It then highlights fish consumption by region. As a result of increased demand for freshwater fish, marketing plays an increasing vital role and is left in the hand of private sector. Marketing practices including market structure, marketing channel and marketing margins are analyzed and discussed. It is found that the private assembly markets as well as the retail outlets have been developed significantly to serve the increase in both the supply and the demand of cultured freshwater fish. Marketing margin varies among species. Obstacles to market access is not observed apparently. The shift in production centers close to the big consuming center with high purchasing power in the past two decades may benefit some group of consumer. However, the consumer in other regions can access to freshwater fish through the effective and efficient marketing system. The paper concludes with the discussion and analyzes of future domestic market potential in view of existing and evolving consumption pattern and marketing development, and measures required to realize the potential. This swamp is one of international significance, since it is a home to the endangered animal, the manatee (Trichecus manatee). Also the swamp has a large population of two aquatic species of economic importance in Trinidad and Tobago - the armored cat-fish or cascadura (Hoplosternum littorale) and the ampulariid snail or black conch (Pomacea urceus). Residents of the area include in their diet the consumption of these species, as well as exploit them commercially. The paper is based on two surveys in the swamp, one was of 99 occupiers of plots, to determine their economic activities and the other survey was of 33 households, to determine the importance of fish from the swamp in their diets. The analysis in the paper showed that farming was now the dominant economic activity in the swamp, both in terms of income received as well as the amount of labor utilized. The residents did consume fish from the swamp, but this fish was not the major source of protein. Poultry and poultry products, especially chicken were the preferred protein sources. Farming was seen as a threat not only to fishing, but also to the native flora and fauna of the swamp and the paper called for urgent studies of the impact of such extensive farming on the ecology of the swamp.
