More precisely, we seek to analyze the perceived impact on the marine environment of fishing activities in 5 European countries. Basing on a European sample, we examine the determinants of individual perceptions of the fishing impact on halieutic resources. Moreover, in order to put forward common and national specificities, we estimate the perceived impact for the five countries separately. We evidence that sociodemographic characteristics do not show significant effects on the perception except for age where young people seem to be more sensitive to this ecological issue. However, the perceived impact of fishing on halieutic resources is positively associated to the extent of fishing activities, whereas pollution and global warming surprisingly do not exert significant influence: this result implies that only fishing activities are perceived as having an impact on the biomass. In addition, our estimates show that the subjective impact on halieutic resources is positively influenced by the perceived level of fishing regulation, while an increasing time spent in seaside reduces it. Finally, we show the existence of important national differences in the way in which individuals apprehend the impact of fishing activities on the marine environment. Whereas Italy occupies an intermediate position, Denmark and France are characterized by a more favourable awareness of the perception of the fishing impact than Belgium and the Netherlands. In 2013, Alaska landed 1.88 billion USD worth of seafood, with a volume of 2.63 million MT. This consists of 34% of the total value and 60% of the total volume landed in the US. Of the top 20 fishing port landing by value, 11 are from Alaska. Alaska’s seafood industry directly employs more workers than any other industry sector with more than 60,000. The success of the seafood industry is vital to our coastal communities. In response to employers and stakeholders concern of the graying or increasing age of the workforce, the Alaska Maritime Workforce Development Plan was developed by representatives of the fisheries, seafood, and marine industry sectors, state agencies and the university in Alaska. Aside from workforce development, stakeholders and policy makers also recognize the need for business and entrepreneurship development, including seafood to sustain the economic viability of our fisheries/seafood dependent coastal communities. This presentation illustrates how marine extension, specifically the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program and the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center assist Alaska’s seafood harvesting and processing sectors to maintain their viability in the global seafood marketplace. Training programs such as the Alaska Seafood Processor Institute, Seafood Processor Quality Control to address the graying of the workforce, research programs such as co-product development to increase the total value of the catch, and service programs such as one-on-one business and market development consultations will be presented and discussed. Two sectional questionnaire forms designed separately were administered to users (152 fisherfolks and 202 residents of immediate communities of the lakes) and expected visitors (275 residents of major cities near the lakes). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) on SPSS 17 for windows. On Lake Asejire game species accounted for 30.57% and 31.05% at Oyan. Species include Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus, Hepsetus odoe, Hydrocinus spp, Lates niloticus, Clarias gariepinus. Season was significant on weight (p<0.05). Education was significant to willingness to tolerate recreationists (p<0.05), age and fishing experience had significant influence on rendering of assistance to recreationists (p<0.05). Economic and infrastructural development were reasons for desiring recreational fisheries. Willingness to visit was high, activities desired were boat cruising (40%), fishing (23%), swimming 23% and sight seeing (19%). 88.9% showed willingness to pay above NGN500 for entrance, sex was significant on amount to pay while education was significant on time of visit. The relative abundance of game species is equivalent to the required 1:3 ratio recommended for carnivore/forage ratio in angling ponds. This and the positive disposition of resource users and the willingness to pay are strong indications of success.
