The fisheries stock assessments have shown a declining population and have led to a number of management measures, including fishing moratorium. This study evaluated the effect of the fishing moratorium on the sustainability of PRE fisheries through an ecosystem approach. Then, a series of 100 years dynamics simulations were examined in light of five scenarios on the basis of the 1998 Ecopath model to explore better strategies on the fishing moratorium. S0: the present fishing moratorium continuation, S1: No fishing moratorium executed, S2: extending the duration of the moratorium (i.e., 1 June to 1 September), S3: banning all fishing operations in the moratorium season, S4: No fishing moratorium executed but reducing the fishing effort of all fishing gears by 50%. The results show that the fishing moratorium did benefit the ecosystem protection. Comparative analysis among different scenarios indicates that the largest increase (28.0%) in the fish stocks could be obtained in S4. Moreover, it incurred an increase (43%) in total landings. There seemed to be no differences between S0 and S3. The sector not only provides employment for the citizens but also contributes more than 40% of animal protein consumed by average Nigerian. However, over the years the role of providing animal protein for the populace dwindled to the extent that fish demand outweigh fish production, which created trade imbalance. In order to reverse decline in fish production and curtail fish imports, Government of Nigeria put up agricultural and trade policies to boost fish production and move Nigeria toward self sufficiency in fish. In this study we examined if these policies have influenced fish production, import and export from 1961-2006 in Nigeria. We applied statistical and econometric techniques to relevant time series data generated from Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin and Food and Agricultural Organisation Statistical Database. The results of the analyses indicate that SAP has significant effect on fish export, but it has not significantly increased fish production and decreased fish importation in Nigeria. The implication of these findings is that although SAP may increase fish export in Nigeria; because of price incentives associated with SAP. However, price incentives may not be enough to stimulate domestic fish production in Nigeria. The country should think of production inputs incentives as done during Pre-SAP era. The government needs to set in motion other sustainable sector specific strategies and policies in order to fully exploit the potentials of Nigeria’s fishery sector. One of these sustainable strategies is the proper harnessing of aquaculture. The traditional production systems of the Mekong Delta were based on floating rice varieties and fish harvested both from rivers and rice fields. Since 1980 the presence of fish in the rice fields decreased and research developed the socalled concurrent rice–fish system to capture the advantages of the synergy. Whether this is a feasible option depends on the farmers’ drives and motives for taking-up the technology. In 2000 we made an inventory among 60 farmers who adopted the rice–fish system in four districts to describe their resources and motivations. In 2006 we repeated this survey among 94 farmers including potential adopters, in order to evaluate the take-up potential of the rice–fish system in the Mekong Delta. Income/person and income/ha of the farm households with a rice–fish system were close to double, while their land area (2.5ha) was not significantly larger than those farms without a rice–fish system (1.95ha). Usually farmers integrating also pigs and fish had the smallest land area. The farmers’ non-adoption of the rice–fish system was mainly due to low availability of capital and land, and to inappropriate location of the field in relation to the homestead, water availability, and agro-ecological conditions. To create space for more upland crops was an important argument for the construction of a rice–fish system. Modeling confirmed that under appropriate agro-ecological conditions the take-up of rice–fish systems can be stimulated by increasing know-how on fish and on system component integration. The sensitivity of the fuzzy logic simulation did not confirm the importance of land size and wealth ranking for the take-up. Rasmus, Bastardie, Francois, Miethe, Tanja We previously developed a spatially explicit, individual-based model (IBM) evaluating the bio-economic efficiency of fishing vessel movements between regions according to the catching and targeting of different species based on the most recent high resolution spatial fishery data. The main purpose was to test the effects of alternative fishing effort allocation scenarios related to fuel consumption, energy efficiency (value per litre of fuel), sustainable fish stock harvesting, and profitability of the fisheries. The assumption here was constant underlying resource availability. Now, an advanced version couples the vessel model to selected size-based population models and considers the underlying resource dynamics in the distribution and density patterns of the targeted stocks for the cases of Danish and German vessels harvesting the North Sea and Baltic fish stocks. The stochastic fishing process includes direct and local depletion by stock that is specific to the vessel catching power, which is proportional to the encountered size-based population on the visited ground and is based on stock assessment and research survey data. The impact of the potential fishing effort displacement by vessels on the fish stocks, with resulting fishing mortality, and the vessels’ economic consequences are evaluated on high spatial and seasonal disaggregation levels by simulating different individual choices of vessel speed, fishing grounds and ports. All tested scenarios led to increased overall energy efficiency, except for the fishing closures that increased fuel consumption and costs for most of the vessels due to increased travel distance. On an individual scale, the simulations led to gains and losses due to either the technical interactions between vessels exploiting the same stocks or to the alteration of individual fishing patterns. We demonstrate that integrating the spatial activity of vessels and local fish stock abundance dynamics allow for interactions and more realistic predictions of fishermen behaviour, revenues and stock abundance.
