Unfortunately, such information has been scarce in Nigeria. The economic analysis of fish farming in Osun State, South-Western Nigeria was therefore carried out using data collected from seventy two randomly selected fish farms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, costs and returns, as well as multiple regression analysis. The relationship between fish output and five inputs: feed, fertilizer, lime, labour and fingerlings were measured using Cobb-Douglass production model. Results suggest that a unit increase in fertilizer application contributed 46 percent increase to the profitability of the fish farms and this was significant at p<0.01. Also, labour was significant at p<0.05 as the results suggest that a unit increase in labour contributed 60 per cent increase to the profitability of the fish farms. The model explained 81% of the variation in total output. On the whole, fish farming was found to be profitable with a benefit-cost ratio of 1.65 and profit–cost ratio of 0.65. It is recommended that fish farmers in the study area should increase their use of feed, lime and fingerlings and decrease their use of fertilizer and labour. Data on the socio-economic characteristics of farmers revealed that most fish farmers (58.3%) in the State were males, aged between 31-50 years old. About 91.7% of fish farmers were married and 95.8% had formal education. About 86.1% owned land either by inheritance or purchase, 8.3% operated on leased land and 5.6% rented the land upon which they operated. About 75% of the respondents got their capital from personal savings, 11.1% from cooperatives, and only 5.6% had access to bank loans. This study attempted to give empirical backing or refutation to the assertion that dried fish is consumed more than fresh fish in Nigeria. Data used were gathered in 90 rural and urban households selected through multi-stage sampling technique. Analytical tools used included descriptive, Z-test and Chi-square statistics and regression model. Empirical results revealed mean household size of 7 in both households while average annual income was N471,200.04 ($2,908.6) and N326,466.58 ($2015.2) in urban and rural households, respectively. The average quantity of fresh and dried fish consumed per household per year was 13.0kg and 47.0kg in urban, and 11.5kg and 38.0kg in rural households, respectively. There was no significant difference in the consumption of the dried (1.779, p > 0.10,) and fresh (1.904, p > 0.10) fish forms in both households. OLS regression result revealed that household head’s age and numbers of children below 15 years were not significant in influencing consumption (p> 0.10). Contrariwise, household size and fish price significantly negatively influenced quantity of fish consumed while household income exhibited significant positive effect on consumption. The education variable, which was not significant in dried fish consumption, had significant positive influence on fresh fish consumption. However, 50.0% and 27.0% of the respondents rated affordability and accessibility as the main hindrances to consumption. Policy options directed at tackling the high cost of fresh fish to achieve reduced price and increased consumption, were recommended. Twenty (20) retailers and 60 consumers were randomly selected for questionnaire administration. Descriptive statistics, marketing margin analysis, the gross margin approach to profitability analysis and regression analysis were used. Findings revealed that frozen fish trade was largely in the hands of young uneducated women and was profitable. It was also revealed that most consumers preferred Ethmalosa fimbriata (bonga fish) on account of its low price. The Market margin analyses show a good motivation for continuity in the business although there is need for caution in pricing as consumption of frozen food in the area was price elastic in the fashion of normal goods. Regression results revealed that increase in factors like amount spent on meat, price, income and transportation cost reduced the level of fish consumption while increase in years of schooling, family size and age were positively related to fish consumption. Patronage of Fish in the area appears to be high judging from the profitability level of the trade. Some of the problems militating against the trade include poor power supply, high storage cost and poor road network. Recommendations made include among others, improvement in power supply, encouragement of adult education so as to increase effectiveness of the trade and encourage consumption by consumers, and introduction of other species of frozen fish in order to increase consumers’ choices. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 39 vessel owners during and following a vessel buy-back scheme. Empirical results show key factors affecting the decision to stay or exit, which include the owner's age, other sources of income, the existence of a successor to the business, impact on other involved family members, and expected future business performance, which in some cases was expected to be business failure. Owners did not use any formal financial methods or techniques for their decision-making. Advice sought from accountants was mostly on minimising tax liability. Owners expecting profitable operation considered how to use government grants to enable fresh investment in the fishery. For vessels with poor expected performance, owners' principle concern was 'will I clear my feet?' - would there be a positive net cash position on winding up the business? If they could not get clear of debt by winding up, skippers would continue in unprofitable or low profit boats, as long as they could get a wage for their labour and repay the bank loan, because they saw no other option. This could partly explain the time lag between decline in average profits and decline in fleet capacity in a fishery, identified by other authors.
