Since year 2000 the enterprises have been asked to evaluate their economic parameters, such as financial standing, turnover and investments. The present situation is compared with the previous 12 months and with expectations for the coming 12 months. The aim is to collect data that are reliable and comparable in the long term. The survey population consists of all fishery sector enterprises on the register of Statistics Finland, i.e. 850-1000 firms every year. The net sample has been 300-400 and the response rate about 80%. The sample has been allocated to fixed quotas to ensure enough observations of all strata. The development and relevance of the barometer are discussed more closely in the paper. Despite the difficulty to obtain information from the private and public sector about the aquaculture insurance claims, the analysis of insurance data is necessary to develop a risk management strategy of the industry. The aim of the present work is to identify the major risks affecting the seabass/seabream aquaculture by examining qualitative and quantitative insurance claims from the early developmental stage (mid-80s) up to the maturation of the Greek sector (2000). A risk assessment based on scenario quantification and Monte Carlo Simulation with the ZHA WORKS 4.2 QUANT software is used to reveal percentile statistics of 1 Year/Worst out of x Years aggregate loss and thus to "harden" the basis for decision taking. The use of the past insurance experience provides forecasting trends for risk avoidance in the future and contributes to a strategy development for the sustainability of the sector. This paper reports the findings of preliminary social and economic surveys of coastal communities engaged in aquaculture operations, and suggests that current approaches are unlikely to deliver benefit effectively as key issues have not been addressed. Preliminary recommendations are made based on trends and issues of particular importance to coastal communities, to improve livelihoods through better access to resources and infrastructure. Evidence from the Alaska salmon fisheries supports this argument as a connection has been suggested between the recent trends of declining ex-vessel prices and the rapid development of salmon farming elsewhere in the world. In Bristol Bay, home of the largest sockeye salmon runs in the globe, participation in the limited-entry fishery has declined by approximately 20% since 2001. Likewise, permit market values have plummeted to historic low levels, with economic conditions not likely to improve significantly in the mid-term future. To examine this problem, we develop a formal analytical framework for the study of market interactions between a limited-entry fishery and an aquaculture sector. We adapt the model of regulated open-access developed by Homans and Wilen to examine the implications of aquaculture development on the actions of fishermen and the regulatory sector in a restricted-access setting. Results indicate that the emergence of a low-cost aquaculture sector brings about important structural changes in the restricted-access fishery, rendering limited-entry regulations irrelevant as participation rates decline due to the falling prices. An important implication is that, despite the limited-entry constraint, the fishery moves to an institutional arrangement closer to regulated open access, with resource rents drastically reduced. Model predictions are compared with the empirical evidence available from the Bristol Bay sockeye fishery. The advantages of cooperative management relative to the current competitive structure of the fishery are highlighted. Despite the supporting majority of public regarding the shellfish aquaculture operations, these operations are sometimes opposed by local communities claiming the devaluation of housing property due to the construction of oyster farm. Since the uproars against the devaluing of housing property is directly affecting the lives of public, it is critically important to study the effect of construction of oyster farm on its value. A difference-in-difference (DoD) model within hedonic price model (HPM) was used to evaluate the effect of oyster farm on property value. We collected the details of the oyster farms operated in Rhode Island from the Coastal Resource Management Council (CRMC). Our housing sales data lists all the housing transactions in Rhode Island between 2000 and 2013. We used a linear mixed model with lot size as unit level fixed effect and city as random effect. The result showed that the DoD coefficient associated with interaction of distance bands and the construction of oyster farm, was statistically insignificant. The statistical insignificance of the coefficients suggests that there is not much change in housing value due to the construction of oyster farm. The analysis shows that houses further away from coastline will reduce the value of the property.
