As shellfish farming is done in an open area, producers face a large number of risks: e.g. biological, environmental, pollution or climatic risks. Historically, this sector has been affected by several crisis; the last ones were the unexpected mortality of spat in 2008 and 2009. Insurance is one important potential mechanism for managing this kind of risks (e.g. crop insurance in agriculture), but shellfish farming had limited insurance availability in France. The purpose of this article is first to determine specific risks of this segment of agriculture. We then present the existing hedging mechanisms, from self-protection / self-insurance measures to the possible intervention of the Fishery European Funds. We analyze the limits of such instruments and we try to explain why efficient protection is not available for this sector. Main reasons of such a lack are: High level of ambiguity in risks definition, individual correlation and the high degree of specialization of a small sector, what limits the possibility of risk pooling. Over the past fifteen years, the market for bluefin tuna has evolved in an attempt to further enhance the economic value of bluefin tuna landings. Historically, the US East Coast has been a major supplier of high quality bluefin tuna to Japan, the primary market for sashimi grade tuna. To date, many questions regarding the economic feasibility of offshore aquaculture, and in particular offshore bluefin tuna farming in the United States, remain unanswered. This research assesses the economic feasibility of an offshore bluefin tuna aquaculture industry located on the East Coast of the US by developing a dynamic stochastic adaptive bioeconomic model of such an offshore enterprise. The bioeconomic model incorporates the biological constraints of the species, the interaction of relevant economic parameters and constraints, and stochastic sources of risk, to solve for the profit maximizing behavior of a farmed bluefin tuna producer. This research identifies the optimal harvest schedule for an offshore bluefin tuna farming facility that maximizes the net present value of the operation under a variety of economic, biological and regulatory conditions. Economic feasibility is analyzed using profitability indicators including net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). This research is relevant given the continued expansion of bluefin tuna aquaculture globally, the increasing demand for high-quality bluefin tuna, and the uncertainty regarding the economic feasibility of an offshore bluefin tuna aquaculture industry in the United States. This study attempted to give empirical backing or refutation to the assertion that dried fish is consumed more than fresh fish in Nigeria. Data used were gathered in 90 rural and urban households selected through multi-stage sampling technique. Analytical tools used included descriptive, Z-test and Chi-square statistics and regression model. Empirical results revealed mean household size of 7 in both households while average annual income was N471,200.04 ($2,908.6) and N326,466.58 ($2015.2) in urban and rural households, respectively. The average quantity of fresh and dried fish consumed per household per year was 13.0kg and 47.0kg in urban, and 11.5kg and 38.0kg in rural households, respectively. There was no significant difference in the consumption of the dried (1.779, p > 0.10,) and fresh (1.904, p > 0.10) fish forms in both households. OLS regression result revealed that household head’s age and numbers of children below 15 years were not significant in influencing consumption (p> 0.10). Contrariwise, household size and fish price significantly negatively influenced quantity of fish consumed while household income exhibited significant positive effect on consumption. The education variable, which was not significant in dried fish consumption, had significant positive influence on fresh fish consumption. However, 50.0% and 27.0% of the respondents rated affordability and accessibility as the main hindrances to consumption. Policy options directed at tackling the high cost of fresh fish to achieve reduced price and increased consumption, were recommended.
