Van chai have played an important role in fisheries administration, principally by managing the numbers of fishers, tax collection, smoothing local social relations, and harmonizing fishing operations according to local customary behavior. In addition, they are the main focus of information exchange and transmission of knowledge within a local fishing community. Van chai emerged from agricultural villages and gradually engaged in community self-management. As a result, their administrative and social management patterns are heavily influenced by the characteristics of traditional Vietnamese culture. This strong emphasis on local communities in Vietnamese culture has naturally led to the diversity of cultural characteristics among the van chai of different localities. Here we describe the management and behavioral patterns of some van chai where historical and cultural values remain strong, and which are located close to feudal era capital centers. These are van chai in Co Do, Van Chai Dich Vy (in the North), and some van chai in Tam Giang Lagoon. We highlight the past and present roles of the van chai in the hierarchy of fisheries administration of Vietnam. These provide a foundation to rapidly restore and reconstruct a viable system fisheries co-management based on Vietnamese cultural roots, and not some abstract imported ideas. Truly understanding the social-ecological system requires considering the entire "human dimension" and this includes the social, cultural, and legal/policy aspects as well. An understudied yet important factor is women's contribution to fishing at the family and community level. There is a national and international understanding that if we are to understand and develop strategies for coastal resilience, we must take a holistic approach that includes an understanding of the intersection between the dynamics of fisheries management and women's participation within fishing. This research directly addresses this intersection. The objective of this study was to collect oral history data related to past/current strategies for addressing fishing family and community resilience over time. Literature has documented ways in which limited access and catch share programs affect fishing community resilience and sustainability, but have few data that look at how these management systems may be affecting women's roles and participation within the industry. This work takes a closer look at the role of women in adapting to this impact and other market- and management-driven changes on the Oregon coast. A qualitative approach was used to identify and document the historical and current changes and related coping strategies occurring in Oregon's coastal communities. Data were collected, transcribed and analyzed for the Voices from the West Coast Project (VFWC), a collaborative project with Oregon State University (OSU), NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) and Newport Fishermen’s Wives (NFW). The themes developed in this study were meant to be representative of what was important and true to the participants involved in the project. 'Complexity' and 'resilience' were two of the larger abstract themes created to illustrate the common concerns and actions of women in Oregon's commercial fishing industry. 'Connections' and 'marriage and family roles' were more descriptive themes of how women identified themselves within the fishing industry and the types of social networks that evolved out of community connections. Overall, women mentioned changes in their individual roles managing the family business, especially as regulations became more complex and family dynamics changed over time. Individual adaptive strategies were especially common among fishing families that owned quota shares. The results from this research add to the literature on women's roles in the US and provide needed attention to their contribution to the well-being, resilience, and adaptive capacity of Oregon’s evolving fishing industry. While all residents are vulnerable to the effects of disasters, research suggests that women are disproportionately affected at all stages of disaster management: preparedness, response, and recovery. These inequities contribute to a diminished community capacity of resilience to future disasters. In 2010, the Philippines introduced disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) legislation designed to improve DRRM coordination and effectiveness. In 2013 and 2014, the Philippines experienced two of the largest typhoons to ever hit land, affecting an archipelago of around 7,100 island communities dependent on coastal and marine natural resources. The second typhoon arrived while 28 semi-structured interviews were being conducted with respondents working in DRRM, fishing and aquaculture, and women's organizations in the Philippines, almost exactly one year after the previous typhoon. Data were collected to contextualize changes in gender integration in response to disasters. This research extends the 2009 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) study that indicated a high level of awareness of the importance of gender integration for DRRM in the Philippines, by examining gender dimensions as the disaster management process unfolds. Results reveal that important steps are being taken to integrate gender at the DRRM programmatic level, yet gaps remain at the community level. Changes are due in part to a combination of improved policies and lessons learned from recent disaster events. Interviews across sectors and governing levels one year after devastating Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) and amidst Typhoon Hagupit (Ruby) offer insightful comparisons, and show that perceptions of gender differences vary significantly across social and political settings. These differing perspectives also reveal important information regarding some of the barriers to gender integration in DRRM such as evacuation protocols, recovery efforts, overall DRRM awareness, and political challenges. Additionally, respondents shared some successes in disaster management, offering a positive outlook for forthcoming improvements. Addressing these shortcomings and focusing attention on attainable outcomes can help foster more resilient communities in the Philippines and nations worldwide. It is really pity without comprehensive assessments and wide propagandas in order that descendants understand and recover these values. One of these values is management of fishery resources. Learning and experience of the Van Chai, especially their village regulations and customs in catching fishes and treatment to nature, benefits and so on are so worthy for scholars and managers to study and refer to. Appearance of this text is to generally assess coastal Van Chai in Binh Dinh province, to analyze forms of intangible cultural heritages of current Van Chai such as regulations, tradition rituals, professional rules, cultural heritages, belief, worship of Whale (Ca Ong); analyze and explain some traditional forms of fishing villages, praticable meanings in fishery resources protection in inshore areas as well as prevervation of aquatic types in Vietnamese and international red list. Finally, some solutions to develop fishery in coastal Van Chai in Binh Dinh province have been proposed towards community management. To implement it, author has used several methods such as survey, interview, expert and inheritance together with new analyzing tools such as SWOT, relevant matrix to make issues obvious. Research results show that intangible traditional values of the Van Chai in managing fishery resources have been respective and remained the values till now. Co-management models of fishery resources have been based on the community at present. It is suggested that in near future, Binh Dinh province should learn and inherit traditional values and regulations for managing fishery resources of Van Chai. In recent times, self-help groups (SHGs) have emerged as an alternative mechanism to promote savings habit among poor and to provide small and short term loans to its members at lower interest to meet their necessities, consumption and income generation activities like aquaculture. Women are considered as appropriate tool for implementing community and self-development programmes. Against this background, an attempt is made in this paper to review and examine the relevant literature regarding the efficacy of SHGs and other programmes and their impact on the fisherwomen and other stakeholders and also on aquaculture. Research results show that the SHGs are very successful as can be judged from the fact that a large number of people have accepted the system and taken up fish production as their main means of livelihood and source of main or additional income.
