An Analysis of the Characteristics of People Moving to and from Oregon 1985 - 1990 Author: Wineberg, Howard Year: 1995 Using 1990 U.S. Census data, this report has documented the characteristics of people moving to and from Oregon between 1985 and 1990. Substantial migration occurred during this time with about 404,000 people moving to Oregon and about 281,000 people leaving Oregon. Approximately one half of the people moving to Oregon came from California and Washington and about 60% of the people leaving Oregon moved to these two states. Differentials were found in the characteristics of in- and out-migrants. In particular, in-migrants were more likely to be below poverty, 65 years of age and older, and have difficulty speaking English than out-migrants. A greater proportion of out-migrants had a bachelor's degree and income levels were higher for out-migrants than in-migrants. The implications of these findings are discussed. This atlas therefore serves twin purposes: giving our readers the best analysis available about an important social issue, while also providing a caveat about the verity of the information that analysts might rely on to make recommendations. The margins of error that result from the relatively small sample size in ACS data suggest that these data must be used with care. In part driven by Latino population growth, the state’s future will include a population that only recently began to call Oregon home. Clatsop County is one area that is experiencing this population change (See Figure 1). Clatsop County has long remained ethnically homogenous. Yet, the rapid growth of the Latino population coincides at a time where the White population decreases in much of the county. There are few reports, describing the needs of the Latino population in the areas of planning and community. This report details several key demographic and economic indicators for the Latino community from secondary data sources to help planners, community developers, and policy makers understand the unique needs of the Hispanic population. The picture these data sources display, tells the story of a young, family oriented community struggling to find affordable housing and economic opportunities.
