  Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Applications of Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry to Fluvial Geomorphology Author: Dietrich, James Year: 2015 Since 2011, Structure-from-Motion Multi-View Stereo Photogrammetry (SfM or SfM-MVS) has gone from an overlooked computer vision technique to an emerging methodology for collecting low-cost, high spatial resolution three-dimensional data for topographic or surface modeling in many academic fields. This dissertation examines the applications of SfM to the field of fluvial geomorphology. My research objectives for this dissertation were to determine the error and uncertainty that are inherent in SfM datasets, the use of SfM to map and monitor geomorphic change in a small river restoration project, and the use of SfM to map and extract data to examine multi-scale geomorphic patterns for 32 kilometers of the Middle Fork John Day River. SfM provides extremely consistent results, although there are systematic errors that result from certain survey patterns that need to be accounted for in future applications. Monitoring change on small restoration stream channels with SfM gave a more complete spatial perspective than traditional cross sections on small-scale geomorphic change. Helicopter-based SfM was an excellent platform for low-cost, large scale fluvial remote sensing, and the data extracted from the imagery provided multi-scalar perspectives of downstream patterns of channel morphology. This dissertation makes many recommendations for better and more efficient SfM surveys at all of the spatial scales surveyed. By implementing the improvements laid out here and by other authors, SfM will be a powerful tool that will make 3D data collection more accessible to the wider geomorphic community. This research applies traditional field survey methods combined with new applications of remote sensing techniques to examine the geomorphology and sediment dynamics of the montane portions of the Rio Pacuare in Costa Rica. A suite of geomorphic components (channel slope and width, lateral contributions and planform) are examined and a model presented that illustrates the complexity of the Rio Pacuare’s geomorphology and how the distribution of alluvial sediment varies in relation to geology (tectonics and lithology) and flow hydraulics (stream power). Next, average annual bedload sediment transport capacity is estimated using fifty-one years of daily discharge data at six different locations within the study area, including the temporal (monthly) variability of sediment flux due to dry versus wet season discharge regimes. Then, a time-step hydraulic model is created that simulates observed (modern) and potential future discharge scenarios based on regional climate change model results. The simulated discharge data for two locations within the study area is then integrated into the sediment transport model to examine how sediment flux, and thus channel geomorphology, is likely to change in response to changes in the river’s discharge regime. With the closure of the camps after one year, refugees were permitted to move their cottages and establish them as permanent homes elsewhere in the city, providing many with the opportunity for first time home ownership. Remarkably, some authenticated cottages have persisted through the decades in the urban landscape. A survey revealed 45 cottage sites; all have been greatly altered over their 110-year lifespans. These modifications make the relief cottages outstanding examples of vernacular architecture--an originally blank building that was moved and adapted according to the needs of its occupants. As such, the cottages reflect manifestations of significance and integrity that necessitate careful, creative evaluation to fit within the framework of modern historic preservation in the United States.
