Environmental regulations for technical products currently focus on recycling ratios and prohibition of toxic materials. The concept of creating more use-productivity (the output of a product in relation to the materials, labor, etc.) with less resource consumption has considerable potential to a sustainable society. Sustainability in manufacturing can be defined as the application of scientific and technical knowledge to satisfy human needs in different societal frames without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Hence, the objective of this thesis is to identify a research and development plan for sustainable manufacturing focusing on enhancing use-productivity. Core research fields are identified, and finally their technology road maps are developed. Environmental Sustainability is an increasingly common theme in the business and trade press, at conferences, and in everyday conversation. Sustainable manufacturing practices are just as important as using sustainable materials. Any sustainable manufacturing process begins at the very first starting point: design. The product should be designed in such a way that makes it efficient, user friendly, durable and easily recycled. The manufacturing process should employ a renewable energy source. The battery pack is the single most expensive component of an EV. This research focuses on the cell packaging scheme as an opportunity to decrease battery pack cost and improve performance. Traditional battery packs use welded metal tabs or wire bonding between individual cells to provide electrical connection from each cell to an electrical buss, which can be complex and labor intensive to implement. An alternative cell packaging scheme is proposed whereby small cylindrical lithium-ion cells are electrically interconnected without being bonded into one solid unit, offering potential benefits for assembly cost and thermal management. The new cell packaging method uses compressible conductive “interconnects” to form the electrical pathway between cells in a pack. Feasibility of the packaging concept is demonstrated for single cells. A multi-cell interconnect design is then demonstrated on pack of 9 cells. The research presents a thorough characterization of the interconnect material properties and recommendations for continued development of the cell packaging method. Results indicate that the packaging method should be feasible on a scaled-up model. There is currently a resurgence of electronic musical instruments that are based on the hands-on, intuitive designs of an earlier era. Despite all of these options, there is a lack of devices that can be used to control and sequence all of this new electronic hardware. Many musicians are still stuck returning to a computer interface when they want to put together a performance or control more than one instrument at a time. The MIDI Step Sequencer is designed to address this need. The MIDI Step Sequencer is a music composition and arrangement device that uses MIDI as a digital music communications protocol to communicate with other electronic music devices such as synthesizers, samplers, and drum machines. This product provides messages such as note on, note off, velocity, pitch, and parameter values that are stored and transmitted by the MIDI step sequencer. Through a simple button driven interface, the user can sequence rhythmic patterns arranged and stored as loops. These patterns can then be recalled, edited, and arranged on the fly in order to create complex musical arrangements. The MIDI step sequencer can be used for live performance, studio recording, or for simple backing tracks. This product will be marketed as a kit and sold online to DIY enthusiasts. This minimizes overhead and production cost so that minimal funding is needed to launch the initial product.
