Environmental regulations for technical products currently focus on recycling ratios and prohibition of toxic materials. The concept of creating more use-productivity (the output of a product in relation to the materials, labor, etc.) with less resource consumption has considerable potential to a sustainable society. Sustainability in manufacturing can be defined as the application of scientific and technical knowledge to satisfy human needs in different societal frames without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Hence, the objective of this thesis is to identify a research and development plan for sustainable manufacturing focusing on enhancing use-productivity. Core research fields are identified, and finally their technology road maps are developed. Environmental Sustainability is an increasingly common theme in the business and trade press, at conferences, and in everyday conversation. Sustainable manufacturing practices are just as important as using sustainable materials. Any sustainable manufacturing process begins at the very first starting point: design. The product should be designed in such a way that makes it efficient, user friendly, durable and easily recycled. The manufacturing process should employ a renewable energy source. This thesis describes approaches, practices, green tools, and road map for sustainable manufacturing.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Hongsa Chanthavong Oral History Interview Year: 2014 Hongsa Chanthavong was born on October 1, 1934, in Laos to Laotian parents who were born in the early 1900s. Because he comes from Laos, he self-identifies as Lao. Chanthavong attended school in Laos, in Vientiane, until coming to the United States in 1959 to study at the University of Miami. He came by himself to study in the School of Government of Political Science on a scholarship granted by the U.S. government. After his graduation in 1964, he began working for the State Department as an escort interpreter, but after three months, he returned to Laos. There, he worked for the government when in 1975 he was captured by communists and came as a refugee to the United States in 1983 with his wife and children. He began his career at IRCO in 1984 as a business specialist with the Economic Development Project. He moved from that position to resource specialist to director of the International Language Bank, and then he set up the Asian Family Center, becoming the center coordinator in 1994. He now works as the community organizer of the Diversity and Civic Leadership Project and as a business development specialist.   	Citation × Citation Citation Abstract Copy Title: Design and Characterization of a battery Cell Packaging Method for Electric Vehicle Applications Author: Smith, Ryan Year: 2014 Electric vehicles (EVs) face a significant cost barrier to increased sales and widespread adoption. The battery pack is the single most expensive component of an EV. This research focuses on the cell packaging scheme as an opportunity to decrease battery pack cost and improve performance. Traditional battery packs use welded metal tabs or wire bonding between individual cells to provide electrical connection from each cell to an electrical buss, which can be complex and labor intensive to implement. An alternative cell packaging scheme is proposed whereby small cylindrical lithium-ion cells are electrically interconnected without being bonded into one solid unit, offering potential benefits for assembly cost and thermal management. The new cell packaging method uses compressible conductive “interconnects” to form the electrical pathway between cells in a pack. Feasibility of the packaging concept is demonstrated for single cells. A multi-cell interconnect design is then demonstrated on pack of 9 cells. The research presents a thorough characterization of the interconnect material properties and recommendations for continued development of the cell packaging method. Results indicate that the packaging method should be feasible on a scaled-up model.
