Removal of these residuals coupled with planned or completed precommercial thinnings will effectively reduce dwarf mistletoe to an insignificant level and increase future volume yields. The benefit/ cost ratios based on timber values alone are negative for both areas at both 10 and 6 percent discount rates, but other benefits outweigh the economic ones. Based on buildup ratios, stand structure, size of trees, and residual green stand, it is predicted that 5,756 trees will be killed in 1977. An evaluation to establish baseline data on forest insect and disease activity near a magnesium plant under construction in northeastern Washington was initiated in 1974. The plant will emit significant amounts of sulfur dioxide. Data indicates that several fungal and insect species are at low populations. Needle retention appears normal on ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir. Some tip necrosis was found on pines and histological analysis of needles revealed a pollutant syndrome. Tissue analyses indicated total sulfur in pine and fir needles is about twice that found in "clean" areas in Montana. Sulfur dioxide may be drifting in from Spokane, Washington, or Trail, B.C., Canada. In spite of evidence of a small amount of sulfur pollution at present, the forested area in general appears in good health. The data will be a good baseline to which future evaluations can be compared after the magnesium plant begins production. The survey area, 270,000 acres, was stratified into three intensity classes from aerial sketchmapping. This was followed by large scale (1:6,000) aerial photography, photographic interpretation, and ground truth measurements. Estimates of the number of lodgepole killed by mountain pine beetle in 1977 were 1,270,617 trees and 24.2 million cubic feet. The number of total standing dead within the survey boundaries was estimated at 3,117,888 trees and 62.2 million cubic feet. This total standing dead represents 31.4 percent of the total basal area.
